Adding a Node

Sometimes you might want to add a node to an existing Exchange cluster. For example, you may decide that you want to upgrade your existing 3-node, 2-active/1-passive configuration to a 4-node, 2-active/2-passive configuration.

To add a node, you must install Exchange 2003 on the node. For information about installing Exchange 2003 on a cluster node, see "Deploying Exchange Server 2003 in a Cluster" in the Exchange Server 2003 Deployment Guide.

After installing Exchange on the new node in the cluster, consider these settings:

Preferred ownership of your Exchange Virtual Servers   By default, the new node is not a preferred owner of any Exchange Virtual Server. Therefore, if you want the new node to be listed as a preferred owner you must change the properties on the respective Exchange Virtual Server in Cluster Administrator.

Possible ownership of the Exchange resources in an Exchange Virtual Server   By default, the new node that you created is added as a possible owner for all the resources for the Exchange Virtual Servers in your cluster. If you do not want the new node to be a possible owner for any of the resources in the Exchange Virtual Servers in your cluster, remove that node from the list of possible owners in Cluster Administrator.
