RPC/HTTP in Small Business Server

I was chatting to Jenny today, and she was telling me about one of her neighbours who has a problem with Small Business Server, specifically Exchange.  The two chat regularly as John knows that Jenny works for Microsoft, and can share lots of hints and tips about products he uses.  Well his current challenge is back to the usual challenge of implementing RPC over HTTP, but this time its for an SBS Server.  WEll you can have access to Small Business Server using RPC over HTTP, there are just a few specific steps that you need to follow, and although I've blogged about how to Implement RPC/HTTP, and walked through how to troubleshoot RPC/HTTP when things go wrong, here are the bits for SBS...

To configure Small Business Server 2003 Standard or Premium to support RPC over HTTP, run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard. To start the wizard and configure RPC over HTTP, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Server Management.
2. Click To Do List, and then click Connect to the Internet.
3. Continue through the wizard and enter the specific information about your Internet connection type, your DNS server, and your router.
4. On the Web Services Configuration page, click to select the Outlook via the Internet check box under the Allow access to only the following Web site services from the Internet. Select any additional services, such as Outlook Web Access, that you require.
5. Click Next.
6. On the Web Server Certificate page, select the Web server certificate type, and then click Next. You can choose to either install a new Web server certificate or locate a third-party certificate.
7. The wizard automatically configures Exchange, Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server, IIS, and the RPC proxy registry entries.

Its a good idea to familiarise yourself with this KB article too, especially to watch the streaming video that walks through the configuration options.  ALso, read Susan's  and Mark's blog for really insightful SBS information...

# re: RPC/HTTP in Small Business Server

Tell Jenny that if she logs into the Remote Web Workplace, that down in the corner is a link to Outlook over the web on the client end.

"Configure your computer to use Outlook via the Internet
Learn how to configure Outlook on your remote computer to connect via the Internet to Windows Small Business Server."

In there is 'exact' SBSized instructions specific to her server.

BTW ... SBS uses self signed certs which are just fine.

It's a piece of cake in a SBS network [he's working too hard...and not using the wizards :-)
