Republicans disguise campaign letter as official mailing

Voters in the 47th district got a mailing over the weekend from the state GOP disguised as a letter from the state Attorney General's office.

The letter from Attorney General Rob McKenna had an Olympia return address and an official-looking logo. It gives the impression of an important communication from the state government.

Instead it is a personal attack on Claudia Kaufmann, paid for by the state GOP, which compares her campaign ads to unscrupulous businesses that violate consumer protection laws.

I've seen Claudia Kaufmann's campaign ads and mailings and find nothing that merits comment that they would be illegal if they were not political speech. Such a comment is a legal opinon and inappropriate for a state attorney general to make, especially in a letter that uses a misleading envelope and return address.

If McKenna wants consumer protection in political ads, how about protecting consumers from political mailings disguised as official state business?

It would help if you could either scan in the letter or post the text of the letter. Then people could read the actual letter.

Rob McKenna is already doing slick questionable self promotional efforts  to get his name out before the public on issues of consumer protection and identity theft. You've probably heard his "public service spots" which prominently say this is Attorney General Rob McKenna.  He is getting thousands and thousands of dollars worth offree public exposure of his name by this startegy - trying to make his name a household word.

So is he trying to guarantee he has no one running against him next time or is he aspiring to run for Governor or for US Senate? Maybe its time for Governor Gregoire to start running public service spots of her own.

Realize the Attorney General's Office could have anyone speak in those public service announcements. Just happens to be the Attorney General himself - pretty convenient and free way to get the voters to recogize your name and identify with non-controversial issues and get ready for the next election.  Who needs to raise money when you can advertise for free.

 Sergeant Ricky Clousing
We Americans have found ourselves in a pivotal era where we have traded humanity for patriotism. Where we have traded civil liberties for a sense of security. I stand here before you sharing the same idea as Henry David Thoreau: as an American, and as a Human Being, we mustn't lend ourselves to that same evil which we condemn." Quoted from:
