Turning up the heat on the already simmering auction for the assets of Tribune Co., the nation's largest newspaper publisher, Gannett Co., has emerged as a possible bidder for Tribune's newspaper properties, the Chicago Tribune has learned.
When he looks at the loosely developed expanse of strip malls and industrial buildings surrounding the William Floyd Parkway south of the Long Island Expressway, Brookhaven planning commissioner David Woods sees something quite different: a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly corridor of office, retail and housing development that draws on the intellectual capital and commercial potential of resources such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, a rapidly developing industrial park, a growing residential college campus, and the adjacent and underused town airport.
Ross Mandell, a North Woodmere native who founded a brokerage with operations in New York, Florida and London, has had problems in the past. Now he has new ones: a recent FBI raid, auditors worried that his company can't continue as a going concern, and several more upset customers.
