Natalie Thomas works at Sure Radio

“Sheffield is famed for its ‘village atmosphere’ and northern hospitality – the massive student population get on pretty well with the locals. The city is in the middle of a massive regeneration project and hoping to shake free typical associations with its gloomy and industrial past. The work-inprogress does clutter the skyline with cranes at the moment, but it still manages to be Europe’s greenest city. Not content with being ‘the home of British cutlery’, Sheffield has also spawned the collective musical genius of The Human League, Pulp, The Long Blondes and Arctic Monkeys. Finally, it has the highest retention of graduates of any city, meaning that once you’re here, it’s a reit bugger to leave.”

Dorian Cox, The Long Blondes

“Sheffield is in parts a real retro futurist mess, but I think it’s got a unique charm. You can walk around and imagine you’re in a Pulp song. The city is very DIY, which I think is the reason so many bands come out of here. It’s a bit strange, there isn’t an awful lot of organised alternative stuff going every night (compared to somewhere like Leeds), but people just make their own entertainment instead, putting on their own little events and gigs, which is much more exciting. We all met studying here – eventually you keep bumping into the same people in record stores, charity shops and gigs, and that’s how we got to know each other. Sheffield is stuck in some kind of ’70s timewarp, but I love it.”
Stag Works
“A set of disused steel units that they’re trying to flatten to build housing, but it’s home to almost every practicing band, fanzine or creative person in the city.”

Rutland Arms
“A real old man’s pub off the beaten track, but with Egyptian décor inside and palm trees in the garden – a proper find.”

University Art Tower
“We filmed one of our videos there – in 25 years people will visit it on The Long Blondes tours of Sheffield!”

Broomhill
“It’s dominated by students and the area has some of the best charity shops in the city. Don’t go in any of the pubs though, unless you like fighting.”

The Peak District
“Five minutes on the bus to get some fresh air and wonderful views; nice to remind yourself there is a real world out there.”
