Last.fm, the company behind the Last.fm and Audioscrobbler projects, is growing. We’re currently looking for great people to fill the following roles:

Front-end Web Developer

Last.fm is looking for a front-end web developer who lives and breathes tight, elegant XHTML and CSS.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and innovative, good at “getting things done,” and have experience using Last.fm / AS.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Implementing the front-end markup for new Last.fm features on your own, as well as improving existing features of the website
  • Working hand-in-hand with our creative team and PHP developers to quickly prototype and roll out new pages and functionality
  • Improving Last.fm's browser compatibility and "alternative platform" experience
  • Inciting the social music revolution and helping us take over the world

Requirements:

  • Proven expertise in modern XHTML and CSS web development / design
  • Familiarity with browser quirks and peculiarities; able to tame Internet Explorer into submission
  • An eye for visual consistency and aesthetic detail
  • A passion for great interfaces
  • An understanding of how the web works, from low to high levels.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of relevant technologies and web standards.
  • Flexibility: we are small company, but we move quickly.

  • Smarty templating system (smarty.php.net)
  • Subversion basics
  • Programming experience (PHP or other)
  • Understanding of design principles / UI best practices

PHP Developer

Last.fm is looking for developers with a combination of strong PHP / SQL, software design principles and HTML skills.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and innovative, good at “getting things done”, and have experience using Last.fm / AS.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing and implement new features on your own, as well as building on existing features of the website.
  • From conception through to implementation, you’ll be writing code used by millions of people every day.
  • Working well within the Last.fm team to help improve the product and take over the world.

Requirements:

  • Excellent knowledge of object-oriented PHP & standards-compliant SQL.
  • Sound knowledge of HTML.
  • Independent problem solving skills, ability to write code that scales well.
  • Understanding of how the web works, from low to high levels.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of relevant technologies and web standards.
  • Flexibility: we are small company, but we move quickly.

Pluses:

  • Smarty templating system (smarty.php.net).
  • Subversion.
  • Web services and syndication.
  • Linux CLI.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL.
  • Experience developing scalable web applications for high-volume sites.
  • Javascript, and when not to use it.
  • Flash.
  • Interest in fields of music, social networking, blogging and related technologies, recommendation systems, and data mining.
  • A preference for vi over emacs

C++ Developer

Last.fm is looking for a smart C++ developer with strong Mac development skills.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and innovative, good at “getting things done,” and have experience using Last.fm / AS.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Implementing new features and maintaining existing code in our client software using Qt and C++
  • Working closely with our creative team and the rest of the development team
  • Inciting the social music revolution and helping us take over the world

Requirements:

  • Excellent C++ knowledge and experience with GUI frameworks
  • Proven expertise in application development on Mac platforms
  • Good degree in CS or EE or equivalent plus professional software development experience
  • Good understanding of web client-server protocols such as HTTP, XML/RPC etc
  • Familiarity with revision control systems (we use SVN)
  • Flexibility - we are small company, but we move quickly
  • A thorough and organised way of working
  • Excellent communication skills (fluent English is a must) and ability to learn quickly

Pluses:

  • Experience with Qt and multi-platform development
  • Software testing experience
  • Understanding of usability principles & interface design
  • Interest in fields of music, social networking, blogging and related technologies, recommendation systems

Country Manager Interns, Japan

Last.fm's business development team is looking for an individual to help manage our Japanese site and work with our partners.

This position is an internship for now.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Researching the competitive environment, as well as relevant legal aspects of running a site in foreign countries
  • Coordinating with professional translators on site updates from English to the foreign language one
  • Handling customer service issues: responding to user questions, acting as intermediary between user and technical team as needed
  • Updating the business development team on user requests to improve/change the site and business partnership requests
  • And, most importantly: ensuring the foreign site retains the Last.fm culture

Requirements:

  • Must have spent at least five years living in Japan with strong written skills and intimate knowledge of the local language and culture.
  • Resident of London
  • Available for a 3-month internship
  • Some computer science knowledge: HTML at a minimum
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced, startup environment
  • Loves music!

Last.fm has offering several opportunities for interns / work experience placements in the following areas:

  • Business Operations / Development

The ideal candidate will be communicative and motivated as well as a passionate about Last.fm. Being able to work independently as well as part of the team is vital. A healthy interest in the fields of music, social networking, and blogging is also a bonus.

The exact job description will vary depending on the position in question, so please get in touch and we can discuss it more. It shouldn’t be too menial.
