Kim Jin Kyu scored Korea’s 150th goal in the history of the Asian Games in injury time to give his side a 2-0 victory in the men’s football competition over Vietnam at Al-Arabi Sports Club on Saturday 2 December.

No other nation has scored as many goals as the three-time winners – the next best being Kuwait on 111 before their group C match with Palestine kicks off at Al-Rayyan Sports Club at 19:45.

However Korea, who have now scored five goals at Doha 2006, will have to hit the goal trail if they are to better the 22 strikes they notched on the way to the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Beijing back in 1990.

Korea had taken the lead in the seventh minute through midfielder Lee Ho, but against a Vietnam side buoyed by their performance in a 2-1 defeat to Bahrain on 28 November, it took until injury time to score a second goal.

After the pool B match, Korea’s coach Pim Verbeek admitted they had plenty to work on, saying: “We started well and scored a good goal. Against a team like this we have to score as soon as possible.

“We made it difficult for ourselves. We played too slow in the first half. Against the good teams we will have to play quicker. And the final pass wasn't good enough."

Vietnam defender Nguyen Minh Duc paid tribute to the Koreans, saying: “The Korean football team is the best in Asia at the moment and they played well today. It is difficult to beat them since they have got players who have been internationally renowned players who produce individual performances.”

Thailand, who have reached the semifinals at the last two Asian Games, were also 2-0 winners in their pool C match with Kyrgyzstan at Al-Rayyan Sports Club thanks to goals from Teeratep Winothai and Sutee Suksomkit.

Star striker Winothai scored his first goal in the seventh minute with his fellow forward Suksomkit scoring a minute into the second half. The latter celebrated with a rocking baby motion, dedicating the goal to his five month-old son.

The other 17:15 kick-off between the United Arab Emirates and Jordan ended in a 1-1 draw at Al-Sadd Football Stadium. This was the first ever meeting between these two in the Asian Games and was a game neither could afford to lose having lost their opening group A matches to Uzbekistan and Qatar respectively.

Odai Alsaify, who had scored five in a round one rout of Macau, China, gave Jordan the lead on the stroke of half time when he chested the ball down and sent the UAE keeper Yousif Al Zaabi the wrong way.

However just before the hour mark Ahmed Khaleifi reacted quickest to fire home the rebound after keeper Mohamad Shatnawi had blocked a shot by Rashed Al Hammadi. Two minutes from time Jordan’s Mouneef Ababneh was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.
