Unseeded Malaysia players Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong proved too good for Indonesia’s Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Luluk Hadiyanto in the men’s doubles badminton final.

The Malaysian pair won comfortably 21-13, 21-14 and Tan said it was a win for his country. “I would like to dedictate the medal to the Malaysian people. I really appreciate seeing all the Malaysian fans who came out here to support us.”

Koo admitted he had been relieved to finally clinch victory, adding: “In the second set I was quite tense because I was thinking about winning so much.

“I did not think I would get this far, but I did think about upsetting one of the top players as one of my targets. My coach did not expect us to go so far, but he always gave us encouragement. We just played the right tactics.”

Silver medallist Chandra said: “In the second set we tried to change the game and play slowly, but the Malaysians kept attacking very fast and we had too many unforced errors. In all of our matches we’ve had to play three sets. We are tired and very disappointed because we have not won anything for two years.”
