The Creative Juice Machine

(Note: This is a real old blog from a different site - I ran across it, and decided to post it here unchanged...)

Creative Juice: The Stuff of The Late Night Creative

Sometimes you are just stuck. Perhaps it is in the middle of nowhere without a WiFi connection, and the need to write your book's next chapter. Sometimes it's at your parents house, wondering what will help you stay up past 9:30 pm so you can work out your next great algorithm. Maybe you are in the middle of a recording session, $150/hr clicking away, trying to figure out The Right Hook for your next million-seller. And you just can't seem to get in a creative groove. What do you do...?

Well, you could also tap the Creative Juice machine.

The boys are at it again...

I don't know how often you might get to Arizona, but if you can make it this weekend, and happen to like etherial, spacey music, you might want to check out the gig at Arcosanti. Led by my friend Mike Metlay, this is a tour de force of some of the best names and acts in the space game.

For Peet's Sake...

Flying to the West Coast involved a two-pronged flight on America West - my first time on this airline. What a fiasco. First flight (6:00 am...) late taking off (alleged instrumentation problem), arrived 5 minutes after my connecting flight's doors closed. Grrrr. Only gets worse from there.

What is, in fact, a starting point?

For some reason, I got fired up last night and restarted work on "my book". Yes, just like everyone over the age of 35, I've given up my Rock Star dreams for Writing Star dreams. Of course, I want to write about electronic music and music software creation, which means I have a total potential audience of about 15 people. Nevertheless, in working on this book, I run into a serious question: what makes a good starting point?

You know what? They are absolutely right!

Something that seldom gets me excited is advertising. I know that it's an important way of communicating to ones customers (I mean, I am in an MBA program right now...), but it isn't normally very effective. However, the latest round of Digidesign adverts are killers, and ought to have us all standing on our seats, cheering!

Virtuosity revealed (a post-recording tale).

In the last two-and-a-half days, I completed a CD. Recorded, mixed and now prepped the entire thing. How is this possible for an anal-retentive like me? I had help - from one of the most talented people I've ever worked with.

Aw, just shut up!

I'm having a coffee outside the best coffee shop in Door County (Leroy's Water Street Coffee), and it's a beautiful day - meaning that the beautiful people are going to be hanging around the front lawn. I normally don't give a hoot about what such folks think, but this was a young, seemingly hip group of just-twenty-somethings, and their conversation really ticked me off.

Oy, those shiny objects...!

I was going to write about something else today, but I got totally distracted. By a shiny object. Something seemingly insignificant, but with a fascination value that is hard to explain. It's a sequencer with some built-in instruments. How can this be so hot?

The winner of the "most literal use of the phrase" goes to...

... Hans Koch, for the little video on the following site:

http://www.hans-w-koch.org/video/trailer.html

This is simply brilliant, and worth the time and download effort required. While I've noticed a move away from the "tax accountant" style of performance, it is interesting to see someone that can use a laptop the way others would use an accordian.

Whazzup From Hip-Hop Town...

I have to admit being a little flustered by a recent purchase - I got a copy of Scratch Magazine, and ended up with a little surprise. The freaks at the bleeding edge of hip hop and rap are clocking just about everybody in terms of experimentation. I know - if you haven't been keeping up lately, you are probably thinking about the lack of imagination involved in rapping over an old Doobie Bros. tune...

Back in her precious arms...

OK, so I tried to shake off my past. Sold the MPC-2000xl about a year-and-a-half ago, and tried getting into some of the newer tools. Bought an MPC-4000. The mixer section (including effects handling) is terminally broken, and is pretty much useless for live (or off-the-cuff) playing that I do. Also, there is something about that implementation of the sequencer that just didn't feel right. Combine that with the fact that it is about the size of a Buick, and you can see I wasn't too pleased...

User design ERROR!

I love it when this stuff happens. Alan Cooper, head of a software design and consulting firm, has written a book called "The Inmates Are Running the Asylum : Why High Tech products Drive Us Crazy and How to Restore the Sanity". He seems to make a lot of great points - one of which is that you should make sure your product is meeting the needs of the user. If only he'd followed his own advice...

Yet Another Move...

Well, due to family issues, I had to move back to Wisconsin. Suffice to say, it was a difficult decision - but thanks to a great employer (Cycling '74) and good friends, it worked out pretty easily. I'll try to remain active with my blogging, but who knows...

OMG - a great new artist!

My wife, who (in general) treats me like a god, keeps me subscribed to The Wire (a UK music magazine). Every few months, the magazine includes a sampler CD that introduces new and old music that they think might be interesting to its readers. In this month's CD, I got floored by one artist in particular...

The start of the Demos

Well, I've had enough people banging on me for Mode demos to actually get started on the process. The first one, created in Digital Performer 4.52, is up today. Not too awe-inspiring, but an interesting 1 hour project. This was the first semi-serious thing I've done with the new DP, and I've got to tell you...
