In the week commencing 17-Mar-03, Class TV returned to normal, except for the Look and Read slot, in which they were going to show the English Express serial drama Own Goal (first shown Monday 9th October to Friday 13th October, 2000 on BBC2). Why they couldn't just show the rest of Legend of the Lost Keys first, and then show Own Goal a week later, I don't know. Anyway in the end they decided to postpone Own Goal to the week commencing 31-Mar-03, then changed their minds again and scrapped it altogether. Instead, Zzaap and the Word Master was repeated again (see below).

About CBBC
The CBBC Channel is a new TV channel from the BBC, available only via digital services (see www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/whatson/new_channels.shtml).

The CBBC Channel is an absolute disgrace to the nation and a horrible waste of the potential of such a channel. It's viewing figures are so minuscule that they barely register and the amateurish, ignorant presentation only alienates any viewers who are unfortunate enough to tune in at all. That said, they do show Look and Read and we should be thankful.

Look and Read is broadcast within Class TV, a sequence of schools programmes broadcast during the day in term time when there wouldn't normally be any kids at home to watch children's programmes (not that they would be watching the CBBC Channel if they were at home anyway...)

About Widescreen
Throughout this section of the website, care has been taken to properly indicate stories which are shown in special formats. In the 1960s and 70s this involved flagging black-and-white stories as MONOCHROME; from the 2000s it has involved indicating which stories are shown in WIDESCREEN.

Officially, all programmes on the CBBC channel are broadcast in widescreen:
Extract from BBCi ©BBC 2002

However, most programmes, including a lot of Look and Read, were made for normal telly (sort of square), not widescreen (long and rectangular). CBBC therefore hack the top and bottom off the picture of children's programmes in a misguided and patronising effort to make them look a little bit widescreen. Luckily, schools programmes are excused this fate. The full normal-telly-shape picture is shown, with extra colourful strips attached to the sides to fill out the widescreen picture. This is very good. Widescreen is supposed to be a step forward in television broadcasting, so if they *must* widescreen-ise things, at least they can show the full picture rather than hacking it to bits as they tend to do with children's programmes.

For the purposes of this website, normal-picture-with-stripes-at-the-sides will not be counted as widescreen. Stories will only be marked as 'widescreen' if the actual programme is in widescreen, not just the frame that CBBC choose to show it within.

About Logos
While schools programmes escape the indignity of being chopped to pieces, they are not immune from having a bright, animated logo stuck on top of them. In a hilariously ineffective attempt to attract viewers by emphasising the brand of the channel above the content of the programmes, a colourful and distracting CBBC 'bug' is permanently shown in the top-left corner of the screen.
