What’s New at Last.fm

The social music revolution just got more social.

Our February 2006 Site Update introduces a bunch of new features and improvements to your Last.fm experience. Here’s an overview of the major changes.
in-page music preview

In-page music previews (with flash)

On music pages you’ll notice new triangular play buttons – click these and a 30-second (or if the button is red, full-length) preview will start playing right in the page! We think this is pretty cool, but if you’d prefer to hear previews the traditional way using the Last.fm Player, all you need to do is change a setting.

Artist descriptions (wiki)

The top of every artist page now features a user-editable (“wiki”) area, used to provide a brief, impartial description that anyone can contribute to. There’s a page of recommended wiki changes (based on your music taste and previous editing) so you can keep an eye on your favourites and help correct any wiki abuse. Happy writing!

Shoutboxes

Shoutboxes

Want to say a quick hello? Music and user pages now have “Shoutboxes” on the right-hand side, showing the last 5 messages posted. Don't want one on your page? Just change a setting.

Tags

Tags tags tags

There are now many more “tag clouds” on music pages, making it easier to see how people describe music at a glance. On your personal “Tags” tab you now have tag cloud based on the tagged music you’ve listened to the most. We’ve also implemented improvements to Global Tag Radio, which means you should hear far less Pink Floyd when listening to the “jazz piano” tag, for example.

Sidebars

New sidebar functionality

Sidebar panels now have two buttons. One toggles between lists and images, the other collapses or expands the panel. We even automatically remember how you like your panels!

Group improvements

We’ve made numerous tweaks and fixes to group functionality, the most prominent being the return of revolutions. Comrades, your days of oppression from tyrannical (or absentee) leadership are at an end! Rise up!

RSS Feed Icons

We’ve made access to Last.fm’s many data feeds even easier by placing clickable feed icons (like this: RSS Feed Icon) around the site.

More to come …

We’re just getting started! Keep listening and keep scrobbling – 2006 will be a fun year at Last.fm.

Until next time, happy listening!
