841765 Update Rollup for Exchange 5.5

KB: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=841765

This article lists the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 problems that have been fixed since Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4 (SP4) was released. This article contains a link to the update rollup that resolves these problems.

Note This article contains an updated version of this update rollup. The original version of this update rollup was released in May, 2004. Because of a regression, you may experience the following issue if you have the May 2004 version of this update rollup installed, and if you are using version 2658.04 of Store.exe:

The Information Store may crash when Exchange Server 5.5 computers receive malformed spam messages. The Store may crash during local delivery, while the Store is performing duplicate message detection. This problem may occur if the following conditions are all true:

  • A message has a NULL sender address.
  • The Internet message ID exceeds 255 characters.
  • The first 255 characters of the incoming message ID match the first 255 characters of the incoming message ID for another message that is already in the user's mailbox.

Prerequisites

This update requires Exchange Server 5.5 SP4.

Important If you installed the May 2004 Update Rollup (build 2658.4), you must first uninstall that update rollup before installing this rereleased November 2004 Update Rollup (build 2658.25).

885685 How to troubleshoot the POP3 Connector in Windows Small Business Server 2003

Interesting addition to this KB, under POP3 Connector Overview

When you use the POP3 Connector to retrieve e-mail messages, those e-mail messages are not processed by any of the following Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 components:

  • Recipient Filtering
  • Sender Filtering
  • Connection Filtering
  • The Intelligent Message Filter add-in

Because the POP3 Connector uses CDO to transfer e-mail messages to the SMTP PickUp folder, these e-mail messages bypass the filtering mechanisms that Exchange 2003 contains.

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=885685

SUMMARY
You can use the Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes service in Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 to download e-mail messages from your Internet service provider (ISP) and to deliver those messages. The POP3 Connector uses the following process to deliver e-mail messages to a user in your organization:

  1. It establishes a connection to the remote POP3 server.
  2. It downloads all the messages for that e-mail account to the Windows Small Business Server-based computer.
  3. It moves those messages to the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) PickUp folder where the messages can be delivered to a user's mailbox.

If you experience e-mail message delivery problems when you use the POP3 Connector, first determine which part or parts of this message delivery process are unsuccessful. After you determine the message delivery stage that is unsuccessful, you can perform specific troubleshooting steps to resolve the message delivery issue.

INTRODUCTION
This article describes how to troubleshoot e-mail download and delivery problems that may occur if you use the POP3 Connector in Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Warning When you troubleshoot POP3 Connector e-mail delivery issues, you can lose e-mail messages. If you cannot find an e-mail message in one of the locations that is described in this article, that message might not be recoverable.

Exchange Server RFC and standards compliance

Ahh, this could some in usefull .. for something :-| Looks like it gets updated too!

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262986

This article is intended to be a reference for the Requests for Comments (RFC) and other standards that are supported in Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. While every effort has been made to verify this information, omission of an RFC from this list does not necessarily mean that Exchange does not at least partially comply with the RFC. RFCs are guidelines, but often contain two types of information: required and optional. Microsoft and other vendors may or may not choose to implement optional requirements or may interpret portions of RFCs differently.

Q: Where’s the blue suitcase with explosives inside?

I find this just amazing :-o

Source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6672643/

Somewhere in the world, there’s a navy blue suitcase with a small pack of explosives tucked in its side pocket.

Four days after police at Charles de Gaulle Airport slipped some plastic explosives into a random passenger’s bag as part of an exercise for sniffer dogs, it is still missing — and authorities are stumped and embarrassed.

Police have sought to minimize public concern by insisting there’s nothing to worry about: The explosives had no detonator and are unlikely to pose a danger.

...
Authorities believe the suitcase left Paris between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and could have wound up on any of about 100 flights.

...
The training exercise was aimed at providing sniffer dogs a real-life airport scenario — a technique that has been used for years, said Bouquin.

Blame, in this case, cannot be placed on the dogs.

Two police officers involved in the exercise stashed a cell-phone sized pack of plastic explosives into the side pocket of the navy blue suitcase as it rolled along a conveyer belt.

One dog successfully identified the bag, but police then lost track of it when they went to fetch a second dog for the exercise.

“That’s how the explosives disappeared,” said Bouquin, noting that police have not lost hope of retrieving the explosives — someday.

Microsoft Acquires Anti-Spyware Leader GIANT Company

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/dec04/12-16GIANTPR.asp

New Offerings Will Help Customers Keep SpywareAnd Other Deceptive Software Off Their Computers

REDMOND, Wash. -- Dec. 16, 2004 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that it has acquired GIANT Company Software Inc., a provider of top-rated anti-spyware and Internet security products. Microsoft will use intellectual property and technology assets from the acquisition to provide Microsoft® Windows® customers with new tools to help protect them from the threat of spyware and other deceptive software. In addition, key personnel from GIANT Company will be joining Microsoft's security efforts.

"Spyware is a serious and growing problem for PC users, and customers have made it clear that they want Microsoft to deliver effective solutions to protect against the threat," said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of the Security Business and Technology Unit at Microsoft. "Through this acquisition we're excited to be able to provide near-term relief to Windows customers by offering new technology to help keep spyware and other deceptive software off their PCs."

Microsoft plans to make available to Windows customers a beta version of a spyware protection, detection and removal tool, based on the GIANT AntiSpyware product, within one month. The upcoming beta will scan a customer's PC to locate spyware and other deceptive software threats and enable customers to remove them. The tool will be configurable to block known spyware and other unwanted software from being installed on the computer. It will be available for Microsoft Windows 2000 and later versions.

Spyware is an emerging breed of malicious software that can range from unwanted pop-up ads to unseen programs that record keystrokes or take over a person's PC. Spyware and other unwanted software can slow PC performance, change a computer's configuration, and steal passwords and personal information. A November 2004 IDC study estimated that 67 percent of consumer PCs are infected with some form of spyware.

"Spyware is an industrywide challenge, and it is encouraging to see Microsoft take strong action to protect Windows users," said Chris Christiansen, vice president of security products and services program at IDC. "This announcement and the release of the free beta will help consumers regain control over their PCs."

"Microsoft's investment in GIANT Company means Windows customers will benefit from our anti-spyware technology, which puts the control of software back into the hands of users where it belongs," said Ron Franczyk, co-founder and president of technology at GIANT Company. "The GIANT solution uses extensive spyware-signature databases, real-time security agents and an innovative 'neighborhood watch' for spyware to protect customers from the threat of spyware and other deceptive software."

Terms of the acquisition were not announced. Details of the Microsoft solution beyond the planned beta, including product plans, pricing and a timeline for delivery, are not yet available. The anti-spyware technology will complement the enhanced security features available in Windows XP Service Pack 2 to provide a higher level of protection for Web browsing and other Internet computing activities. Microsoft strongly recommends that customers use an anti-spyware solution in addition to following the three simple steps outlined at http://www.microsoft.com/protect: Use an Internet firewall on all PCs, update all PCs regularly with the latest security updates, and use up-to-date antivirus software.

More information about Microsoft and its efforts to address computer security and provide customers with guidance about spyware and information about anti-spyware solutions is available at http://www.microsoft.com/spyware.

Software Industry Leaders Symantec and VERITAS Software To Merge

Source: http://www.symantec.com/press/2004/n041216.html

Cupertino, CA and Mountain View, CA (December 16, 2004) - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) and VERITAS Software Corp. (Nasdaq: VRTS) today announced that the companies have entered into a definitive agreement to merge in an all-stock transaction. Based on Symantec's stock price of $27.38 at market close on December 15, 2004, the transaction is valued at approximately $13.5 billion.

The leader in storage software and the leader in security software will provide enterprise customers with a more effective way to secure and manage their most valuable asset, their information. The combined company will be uniquely positioned to deliver information security and availability solutions across all platforms, from the desktop to the data center, from consumers and small businesses to large organizations and service providers.

Under the agreement, which has been unanimously approved by both boards of directors, VERITAS stock will be converted into Symantec stock at a fixed exchange ratio of 1.1242 shares of Symantec common stock for each outstanding share of VERITAS common stock. Upon closing, Symantec shareholders will own approximately 60 percent and VERITAS shareholders approximately 40 percent of the combined company. The transaction is expected to be tax-free to shareholders of both companies for U.S. federal income tax purposes.

The combined company will operate under the Symantec name. John W. Thompson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Symantec, will continue as Chairman and CEO of the combined company. Gary L. Bloom, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of VERITAS, will be Vice-Chairman and President of the combined company. The board directors of the combined company will include 6 members of Symantec's current board and 4 from VERITAS' current board for a total of 10 members.

"Customers are looking to reduce the complexity and cost of managing their IT infrastructure and drive efficiency with fewer suppliers," said John W. Thompson, Chairman and CEO, Symantec. "The new Symantec will help customers balance the need to both secure their information and make it available, thus ensuring its integrity. We believe that information integrity provides the most cost-effective, responsive way to keep businesses up, running and growing in the face of system failures, Internet threats or natural disasters."

"Our customers have told us that one of their most critical needs is to enable 24x7 access to information. At the same time, they must maintain tight security, comply with all regulatory requirements and operate within their existing budget constraints," said Gary L. Bloom, Chairman, President and CEO of VERITAS Software. "Through our unique portfolio of solutions, Symantec and VERITAS are best positioned to address the ever-growing needs of our customers. Based on IDC data, the total market opportunity for the combined company today is approximately $35 billion and is expected to grow to $56 billion by 2007."

By merging with VERITAS, Symantec will expand its combined revenue base and create an entity with significantly greater financial scale and resources. The aggregate revenue of the combined company is expected to be approximately $5 billion for fiscal year 2006, which begins in April 2005 and ends in March 2006. Approximately 75 percent of the revenue of the combined company is expected to come from the enterprise business and 25 percent from the consumer business. In addition, the combined company will have approximately $5 billion in cash.

The combination will create significant benefits for the customers and partners of both companies, including:

  • Breadth - A broad range of leading security and storage solutions at every tier of the enterprise - end point, gateway, and application - across all platforms from a single vendor;
  • Depth - Leading-edge technology combined with expertise to architect, design, and manage security, storage, and IT infrastructures; and
  • Global Reach - Worldwide sales, service, and channel partner organizations supporting millions of consumers, and small, medium, and large enterprise customers.

The transaction is expected to close in the second calendar quarter of 2005 and is subject to customary closing conditions, including approval by the shareholders of both companies and regulatory approvals. Non-GAAP earnings per share for this transaction, which exclude the amortization of deal-related intangibles, the write-down of VERITAS' deferred revenue, restructuring charges, amortization of deferred compensation, and any one-time costs associated with the merger, will be accretive in the first combined year of operations as compared to the Thomson Financial First Call mean estimate of $0.98 for Symantec in fiscal year 2006.

Microsoft Security Updates

Just for completeness, here are the latest 5.  You know what, It always amazes it how people can find the time or have the effort to find holes in Windows!

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-041: Vulnerability in WordPad Could Allow Code Execution (885836)

If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. However, user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-042: Vulnerability in DHCP Could Allow Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service (885249)

An attacker who successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts that have full privileges. However, attempts to exploit these vulnerabilities would most likely result in a denial of service of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server service.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-043: Vulnerability in HyperTerminal Could Allow Code Execution (873339)

If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. However, user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-044: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel and LSASS Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (885835)

An attacker who successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts that have full privileges

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-045: Vulnerability in WINS Could Allow Remote Code Execution (870763)

An attacker who successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts that have full privileges.

The Most Dangerous Day Of The Year

http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-13264500,00.html

Drivers have been urged to take special care on Wednesday after new research showed that December 15 is the most dangerous day of the year for driving.

Research for Lloyds TSB Insurance said it was the day it received the highest number of claims for road accidents last year.

The company handled more than 250 claims on December 15, 2003, compared to an average of 145 a day for the rest of December and a low of just one claim a day during most of January.

December was the most dangerous month of the year, with well over 4,000 claims in total.

A survey of 4,000 drivers showed that almost one in five believed Christmas was the time when they felt most distracted on the roads.

One in 10 admitted speeding over the Christmas break and one in 20 said they got behind the wheel when they were not completely sober.

Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance, said: "These figures are a timely reminder that drivers need to be cautious throughout the festive season.

"With thousands of drivers rushing to and from Christmas parties and dashing down the high street to finish off the shopping, it's small wonder there are so many accidents."

Oracle seals $10bn Peoplesoft bid

Lets hope it worth it!

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4092059.stm

Peoplesoft has agreed to accept a revised $10.3bn (£5.3bn) takeover bid from Oracle, ending a bitter 18-month corporate battle.

Peoplesoft's board has approved an improved bid from its business software rival - worth $26.50 a share - after spurning five previous offers.

Oracle appealed to Peoplesoft investors to approve the bid last month, winning the support of 60% of shareholders.

The deal is a personal victory for Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison.

France shows off tallest bridge

Damm, now that is tall!

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4091813.stm

The world's highest road bridge has been inaugurated in southern France by President Jacques Chirac.

The Millau bridge over the River Tarn in the Massif Central mountains is more than 300m (984ft) high - taller even than the country's Eiffel Tower.

The bridge, which opens to traffic on Thursday, was built to clear summer traffic jams around the town.

The BBC's Paris correspondent, Caroline Wyatt, says the bridge is one of the most breathtaking ever built.

She says that with its concrete and steel pillars soaring high above the morning fog in the Tarn Valley, the construction makes a spectacular sight.

We Are The Champions of the World - says HTC

These are the people who make the iPaq and most windows smartphones!

Source: http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/3394.html

Hsueh-Hung Wang builds Dopod brand in cooperation with High Tech Computer Corp. ( HTC ) and by the way Cho, Huo-Tu - the boss of HTC, says about his HTC corporation this: "there is no phone manufactures in the present market that has the power to compete with it". There is also very clear and open talk about challenging Symbian camp !
Do you remember people from Orange network operator boasting about "designing the phone in cooperation with HTC" and similar showing-off? We remember well. It appears now that it all was untrue. Actually HTC - the main manufacturer of Microsoft powered cell phones has become so powerful that it is not only designing the phones independently but also spawning its own brands in cooperation with Chinese/Taiwanese friends...

Of course operators and distributors still play important role in product development, but cooperation with them is limited to branding - like adding their logo or adding some additional buttons...

Wang, Hsueh-Hung, president of VIA Technolgy, takes advantage of the power of research & development and OEM enjoyed by High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), the Golden Hen, to build its own brand, Dopod, in the smart phone market.

HTC, the OEM for the Dopod smart phone for Wang, Hsueh-Hung wants to reproduce the successful experience of HTC in the OEM market of the palm computer and smart phone to promote the new phone.

Cho, Huo-Tu, general manager of HTC, has built HTC as the top palm computer and smart phone manufacturer and there is no phone manufactures in the present market that has the power to compete with it. With the help of the best cooperation with HTC, Tung, Chun-Liang made a promise to Wang, Hsueh-Hung that he would have Dopod listed in the market in three years and make it the first company that has its own brand other than HTC.

But different from Dopod, other phone manufacturers employ Symbian invested by Nokia as a platform rather than Microsoft software, so that there may be two different camps to compete with each other for the market share, one takes the Symbian as the platform and the other takes the WinCE as the platform. And Dopod is the active representative among the camp that uses WinCE as the platform and challenge directly the other camp.

Monitoring on the increase as bosses lose trust in their staff

It's not big brother but big boss!

Source: http://www.jobserve.com/News/W2727.news

Office workers face the threat of increasing control, monitoring, scrutiny and micromanagement, according to a new report by the LSE and sponsored by Microsoft, which found supply chain technology developed for monitoring goods is now being applied to individuals.

The report, entitled The Future Role of Trust in Work is part of Tomorrow’s Work, argues that outdated command and control management culture is causing managers to misuse technology by over-scrutinising worker performance. This means employees are reacting to communication from employers rather than interacting with customers which ultimately damages productivity.

Contributors included the London School of Economics, TUC and CBI, and the report explores how we manage our working lives and professional environments in the digital age. Speaking at the report’s launch, the author, Dr Carsten Sorensen, LSE, said that British business needed to find new ways of managing people.

Outsourcing is inevitable

Get your CV ready - time for us to all become bus drivers or Postmen!

Source:
http://www.jobserve.com/News/W2730.news

IT workers will be working at specialist IT houses rather than in-house for companies, claims the National Outsourcing Association, as more companies outsource to compete in a global economy.

The result of the NOA's survey revealed that 72% of end user companies and 82% of suppliers believe that outsourcing is inevitable. Martyn Hart, chairman of the NOA commented, "Even though this may seem like a blow to the IT industry, it is purely indicative of the changing nature of how companies are doing business. Many companies are now looking to outsource ICT functions to specialist providers - it means that increasingly, IT workers will be working at specialist IT houses rather than in-house for companies."

However, losing all internal knowledge of an outsourced process can be dangerous, the survey warns. "Retaining a degree of knowledge of IT within an organisation that has outsourced is crucial," comments Hart. "The role of the IT director is changing from a more operational 'hands on' approach to a more strategic function - in the future the main responsibility of the CIO and the IT team will be to deliver business strategy through ICT by managing external partnerships and facilitating the smooth provision of IT services from a third party. Delivering innovation to the business through new technology and ideas may well be more appealing to in-house IT professionals than having to deal with day to day technical problems."

A large majority of respondents agreed that outsourcing is becoming essential for companies in order to compete effectively in a global economy. When questioned on the decision making process, the final choice to outsource is down to the CEO, according to a third of end users and half of suppliers. Only 14% of users and 11% of suppliers said the final decision lies with the CIO.

Tailoring your CV to suit the job

Thought this should be shared - you will never know when you will need it!

Source:
http://www.jobserve.com/News/W2303.news

A recruiter is likely to spend no more than 30 seconds scanning a CV to decide “has this person got what it takes to do the job?” You will significantly increase your chances of being selected for interview by tailoring your CV to emphasize your attitude, skills and knowledge that have been specifically mentioned in the recruitment advertisement.

Read the job advert carefully to help you decide which of your attributes and achievements will be appropriate for the job you are applying for. The advert will have been written to give greater importance to those attributes the company values the most, so you can easily determine if you are going to be a good match for the role advertised.

War of the worms: Top 10 viruses during 2004

Scary

Source: http://www.jobserve.com/News/W2732.news

In a year which saw a 51.8% increase in the number of new viruses, the Netsky-P worm has accounted for almost a quarter of all virus incidents reported, making it the hardest hitting virus of 2004.

The mass-mailing Netsky-P and Zafi-B worms have been battling it out for the top spot in the chart for most of the second half of the year, while internet worm Sasser disrupted thousands of businesses and home users in May. The top ten viruses of the year are as follows:

Position Virus %age of reports
1 W32/Netsky-P 22.6
2 W32/Zafi-B 18.8
3 W32/Sasser 14.2
4 W32/Netsky-B 7.4
5 W32/Netsky-D 6.1
6 W32/Netsky-Z 3.7
7 W32/MyDoom-A 2.4
8 W32/Sober-I 1.9
9 W32/Netsky-C 1.8
10 W32/Bagle-AA 1.6
Others 19.5

"2004 was the year of the Netsky - the first of more than 30 versions of this worm arrived on the scene in February and an astonishing five variants have made it into the annual top ten," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. "A German teenager called Sven Jaschan is responsible for more than 50% of all the virus incidents reported in 2004."

The second most prevalent worm of the year, Zafi-B, was first seen back in June 2004, and has been spreading successfully ever since, with little sign of slowdown.

Sasser, the year's third most prevalent worm, does not use email to propagate. Sasser spread via the internet, attacking Windows computers, which were not updated with a critical Microsoft security patch. This patch was made available only 2 weeks before Sasser was first seen.

Many other virus and spam developments have taken place during 2004, and have revealed trends for the future.

Chinese firm buys IBM PC business

Old news, but interesting end to an era! ... could leave Big Blue open to buy Apple or partner with them :-o

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4077579.stm

IBM, a pioneer of the personal computer business, is selling its PC hardware division to China's number one computer maker Lenovo.

After days of rumours, the announcement heralds a $1.75bn (£900m) deal which will make the combined operation the third biggest PC vendor in the world.

Lenovo, formerly known as Legend, has been pushing hard to spread its brand on the international stage.

IBM, meanwhile, will be free to focus on its other more lucrative businesses.

Illegal Engineering

This is an interesting read

Source: http://www.timhunkin.com/94_illegal_engineering.htm

An illustrated lecture about the history of Safes and Safe breaking. The lecture is based round a large wooden safe with a video camera inside, projecting the inside of the door mechanism on a screen.
This is currently my favourite lecture to perform. There's something very satisfying about the simple ingenuity of safes and locks. Its also an area of engineering design that has not been transformed by science or maths, and to me illustrates intuitive aspect of the subject, which often now gets forgotten.

Support for Microsoft Software in VMware Virtual Machines

Found this last night!

VMware addresses questions of support for Microsoft software in VMware virtual machines and offers resolution paths.

Summary
As VMware software adoption in the Enterprise accelerates, the issue of support for Microsoft software running in VMware virtual machines is raised frequently.

  • We believe this is not a technical issue. The reality is that Microsoft has responded to support calls from customers, running applications in virtual machines.
  • IBM, Dell, and HP all have support offerings for Windows running in a VMware virtual machine.
  • There are tools and procedures available to replicate virtual machine workloads on physical platforms.

In recent months, VMware has received some questions regarding Microsoft support for Windows operating systems and Microsoft applications running inside VMware virtual machines. Many of these questions are fueled by the rapidly-growing deployments of VMware virtual infrastructure in production and mission-criticalenvironments.

Support Options
Microsoft officially does not support issues that occur in Microsoft operating systems or programs that run in a VMware virtual machine until it is determined that the same issue can be reproduced outside the virtual machine environment. We believe this is not driven by technical reasons. In fact, a virtual machine can offer a more stable platform than the hardware equivalent, where the corresponding devices can change on a daily basis. As a result, VMware has provided significant productivity benefits to Microsoft customers since the adoption of VMware’s virtual infrastructure technology began seven years ago.

Unofficially, Microsoft has provided support to customers who have successfully applied their leverage to get the needed support. This approach has been shown to work on many occasions.

Other measures customers can take to ensure their production environments are fully supported include:

  • Work with VMware platform partners such as IBM, Dell, and HP, which all provide end-to-end support packages that include a Microsoft operating system and VMware software. For an example of such an offering, please refer to: http://www-1.ibm.com/services/us/its/pdf/remotesupportxseries.pdf
  • Review the documented procedures for reproducing a virtual environment on a physical system, as described on the VMware Web site at: http://www.vmware.com/support/v2p/

VMware can also work with customers to reproduce issues on native hardware.

VMware and EMC will continue to work on this issue to help  Microsoft do what is right for customers. We would also like to encourage customers to voice their opinions to Microsoft and convince the company to adopt an official policy to broaden the support for customers that choose to take advantage of virtual machine technology.

867640 How to monitor mailbox access by auditing or by viewing Mailbox Resources in Exchange Server

This looks interesting

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=867640

<SNIP>
Your organization may want to monitor mailbox access for security purposes. In Exchange, you can do this by auditing or by viewing Mailbox Resources in the Exchange Administrator program or in Exchange System Manager. This article describes some of the limitations that pertain to this kind of monitoring.

The following event may be logged in the application event log. This event indicates that an account accessed a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox, but that it is not the primary account for that mailbox.

Event ID: 1016
Source: MSExchangeIS Private
Type: Success
Audit Category: Logons
NT User DOMAIN\username logged on to John Doe mailbox, and is not the primary Windows NT account on this mailbox.

In Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you may see the following event:

Event ID: 1016
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
Event Type: Success Audit
Event Category: Logons
Description: Windows 2000 User NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM logged on to mailbox@domain.com mailbox, and is not the primary Windows 2000 account on this mailbox.

This event may be logged in circumstances where no security breach has occurred. For example, this event may be logged when a service or an add-in has to use an account that has access to all mailboxes. Examples of accounts that have access to all mailboxes are service accounts or administrator accounts. Examples of services or add-ins that have to use these kinds of accounts include antivirus software, backup agents, or Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Manager.

Exchange Server 5.5 records event 1016 in the application event log regardless of how you set the diagnostic logging level in the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe). Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 only log event 1016 in the application event log when the diagnostic logging level is set to at least Minimum in the Logons category of the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

This event is also logged when you try to access another user's mailbox or calendar, even if you have permission to access the mailbox or the calendar. This event is logged regardless of whether your attempt to access the user's mailbox or calendar is successful or unsuccessful.

Office Wisdom

This should put a smile on your face this morning

  1. Eagles may soar high, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
  2. Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
  3. There may be no 'I' in team, but there's a 'ME' if you look hard enough.
  4. Process and Procedure are the last hiding place of people without the wit and wisdom to do their job properly.
  5. Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability.
  6. Never do today that which will become someone else’s responsibility tomorrow.
  7. Every time you open your mouth you have this wonderful ability to continually confirm what I think.
  8. Show me a good loser and I'll show you a LOSER!
  9. Put the key of despair into the lock of apathy. Turn the knob of mediocrity slowly and open the gates of despondency - welcome to a day in the average office.
  10. If your boss is getting you down, look at him through the prongs of a fork and imagine him in jail.
  11. If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.
  12. If you treat the people around you with love and respect, they will never guess that you're trying to get them sacked.
  13. If at first you don't succeed, remove all evidence you ever tried.
  14. You have to be 100% behind someone, before you can stab them in the back.
  15. If work was so good, the rich would have kept more of it for themselves.
  16. Those of you who think you know everything are annoying to those of us who do.
  17. There's no 'I' in 'team'. But then there's no 'I' in 'useless smug colleague', either. And there's four in 'platitude-quoting idiot'. Go figure.
  18. Know your limitations and be content with them. Too much ambition results in promotion to a job you can't do.
  19. If you're gonna be late, then be late and not just 2 minutes - make it an hour and enjoy your breakfast.
  20. A problem shared is a problem halved, so is your problem really yours or just half of someone else’s?
  21. Is your work done? Are all pigs fed, watered and ready to fly?
  22. I thought I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it was just some b*stard with a torch, bringing me more work.
  23. Avoid employing unlucky people - throw half of the pile of CVs in the bin without reading them.

Using an AudioTron in your SBS network?

I came across this before I started to blog

Source: http://seanda.blogspot.com/2004/12/using-audiotron-in-your-sbs-network.html

So I installed my Audiotron on my network at my house, only to find it could read shares from my client, but not from my server.

What the heck? Isn't that what servers are for? Storing Data and sharing stuff?

This had to be fixed. After searching for some time on the web, I managed to find that in Windows Server 2003, digital sign communications for all domain controllers is enabled by default. The Audiotron doesn't like this. So you have to disable it.

In GPMC, find the Default Domain Controllers Policy

Edit this policy, and drill down to Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options

In the list on the right, find Microsoft Network Server : Digitally Sign Communications, and change this to disabled

Of course you're going to have to run gpupdate /force to get this to take effect immediately on the server.

Now you're AudioTron can view the server and read music off it.

New Lucozade sign to be constructed alongside the M4

Source: http://www.brentfordtw8.com/default.asp?section=info&page=lucozade04.htm

Local councillors have given the go-ahead for a new Lucozade sign to be constructed alongside the M4.

The Highways Agency had objected to the scheme to replace the sign, removed in September from its home of 50 years along the A4. They claimed that the sign will distract drivers travelling along the elevated section of the M4 and could be a cause of accidents.

However, council officers recommended approval of the scheme, pointing out that the new location is furthur from the slip road junction than the old sign and therefore in a safer place.

The siting of advertisements alongside main roads has proved controversial. Adverts are generally limited to six words, although there are no specific controls on images used. Hounslow councillors have refused permission for some large illuminated advertisements, although these decisions are often reversed on appeal.

The reason why NTT DoCoMo does not like Microsoft powered cell phones - revealed

This made me smile

Source: http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/3379.html

Takumi Suzuki, spokesman of NTT DoCoMo has said:

To tell you the truth, we don't like ... [and] we don't have a plan to invest in [Microsoft] Windows, Windows is not for the mobile space, the files are big.

Incredible! Actually all contemporary Microsoft cell phones - Pocket PC and MS Smartphone - contain .NET Framework burned into ROM and actually .NET programs are thus incredibly small, because all the things needed are already in ROM!

Messaging wars: Lotus, Microsoft move on

Source: http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id;1635440123;fp;16;fpid;0

John Fontana, Network World (06/12/2004 07:38:34)

Nearly a decade ago, email was the killer app and vendors IBM/Lotus and Microsoft were locked in a battle to prove which was best at delivering messaging to a corporate world hungry for online communication.

The winner? Both. Each scored victories that have set them up today as the kingpins of computer-based communication and collaboration, said Eric Arnum, a frontline correspondent during those messaging wars with his now-defunct Electronic Mail and Messaging print publication and Messaging Onlinenewsletter, which chronicled the battle from the trenches.

"I always felt that when Lotus and Microsoft executives got up to say it was a two-horse race, that indeed was their goal -- to portray it as a two-horse race," Arnum said. "In that respect, they both won, they got what they wanted, which was rough parity."

Today, the messaging wars that dominated the mid- to late-1990s, including tabulations of which company had the most licensed users and the best implementations of the latest Internet protocols, have disappeared into a mature market where IBM/Lotus and Microsoft hold nearly 60 per cent of the users, according to The Radicati Group.

However, the fallout lives with IT administrators whose unending job now is to manage email, store it, archive it and protect it from spam and viruses.

IBM/Lotus and Microsoft have expanded the battle into full-on collaboration and real-time communications suites made up of components that include not only email but also instant messaging, voice and videoconferencing, online work rooms and access to mountains of indexed digital data.

IBM/Lotus is pushing ahead with a next-generation platform called IBM/Lotus Workplace, a Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE)-based collection of messaging and collaboration components, such as teamware and document management, which Gartner predicts is the eventual replacement for Notes/Domino.

Microsoft has slung all the collaboration advancements it failed to develop on the back of Exchange onto the mighty shoulders of its Office franchise. The Office System includes the corporate standard Outlook client, as well as SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services 2003 for information sharing and collaboration, Live Communications Server 2005 for instant messaging and presence, and the Live Meetingonline Web conferencing service.

"The advantage we have is that no one can beat the integration we offer with Office," senior director for Exchange, Kim Akers, said. The jury is still out on this new fight.

Experts say IBM is balancing a nervous user base that thinks Notes/Domino will eventually go away even though the company is preaching an integration approach and plans to ship Version 7.0 next year and follow it up with Versions 7.5 and 8.0, which would push support for the platform into 2009.

Last month, IBM announced 17 Workplace templates that mold the technology to specific industries and Workplace Express 2.0 for small and midsize businesses.

"The point is that Workplace is an additive model," vice-president for Lotus Workplace products, Ken Bisconti, said. "We are adding a new data store option, but we are not taking away the [Domino Notes Storage Format] store. We're not taking away the traditional application framework but adding a broader Eclipse programming model."

Users say that reality is coming into focus.

"We can embrace J2EE and still have Notes applications," manager of information services for Sharp Microelectronics, Bruce Elgort, said. "But there is a whole new platform out there and IBM is building upon the success of WebSphere; why wouldn't you? How far are you going to beat Notes and Domino into the ground?"

But analysts say the Notes/Domino and Workplace plans baffle users.

"They are trying to deliver multiple (overlapping) messages," group vice-president at Gartner, Tom Austin, said.

"Message No. 1 is 'don't worry, you can stay with Notes and Domino forever' and customers don't believe that; and with good reason," he said. A controversial report issued by the Radicati Group earlier this year predicted Lotus will lose 7 per cent of the corporate messaging market in the next three years because of its confusing Workplace strategy, going from 24 per cent to 17 per cent, while Microsoft will jump from 31 per cent to 33 per cent.

"The Domino install base tends to be somewhat concerned about the notion of moving over to Workplace," Meta Group's Matt Cain, said. "It is not unusual to at least contemplate a migration to Exchange and/or look for some commodity back-end [e-mail server]."

The picture isn't much clearer for Microsoft, which still has 32 per cent of its user base on Exchange 5.5, according to Radicati. And most are running on Windows NT for which support ends this month.

"They are very exposed with the 5.5 install base," president of the Radicati Group, Sara Radicati, said.

"Microsoft has to be somewhat careful of the (vendors) on the low end of the market because messaging has become more and more commoditised," she said. "The other challenge is security, basically the spam and viruses."

Another challenge is presenting an attractive migration model for Domino shops.

"They have been lacking there," Cain said.

Microsoft's messaging road map is foggy at best. The follow-on to last year's release of Exchange 2003, which was previously called Kodiak and was to introduce a new SQL Server-based data store, is off the road map for now, according to Microsoft officials. Also gone is a security option called Exchange Edge Services that was slated to ship next year but is now in limbo. The standalone message transfer agent was designed for the edge of networks to secure the flow of e-mail to and from the Internet. It also will become a hub to plug in third-party security software and Microsoft's Intelligent Message Filter for spam.

Microsoft's lack of a product road map might be tied to a lack of understanding of end-user needs, Gartner's Austin said. "Microsoft is still at the bits and bytes level and still worried about adding new features and new architectural integrity," Austin said. "They haven't figured out how all this fits into either empowering end users, which has fallen off the radar screen for Microsoft, or how it fits into solving real business problems."

What is clear is that the rivals are locked into another battle, this one much broader with the inclusion of collaboration and real-time communication.

"It is a different battle with a different set of leverage points and a space with a lot of other competitors," said Ed Brill, a longtime Lotus employee and business unit executive for worldwide sales at IBM/Lotus. "It does have echoes of the past, but it doesn't have the same urgency, which is not to say we are not putting in a lot of effort."

Then Brill, a veteran of the battle with Microsoft, fires off another round.

"Maybe that's why Microsoft has been able to move away from Exchange as a platform for collaboration," he said.

How to Configure Always Up-To-Date Notifications

This makes come good reading

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/autd.mspx

Exchange ActiveSync is a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 feature that lets you synchronize your mailbox data to a mobile device. Exchange ActiveSync can be configured to synchronize your mobile device with your Exchange server mailbox at intervals as frequent as every five minutes. Additionally, Pocket PC Phone Edition devices or Smartphones running either Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 software or Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition can be configured for self-updating, using a companion feature named Always-up-to-date (AUTD).

Because you cannot synchronize items on a scheduled basis at intervals less than five minutes, your device might not always have the latest information on it. Additionally, you might incur charges for synchronization sessions even when no data is transferred. The Always-up-to-date notifications feature¡AUTD¡enables Exchange ActiveSync users to configure their Pocket PC Phone Edition or Smartphone device that is running Windows Mobile 2003 software to stay up-to-date with the Exchange server.

In this article, you get a brief introduction to how AUTD works. I also explain how to configure AUTD on your servers and your supported mobile devices. I decided to provide detailed steps for configuring the client devices. Help your users to configure their own devices with the How to Configure Your Client Devices section. Feel free to customize these instructions for your corporate environment.

Q&A;: Support for Windows NT Server 4.0 Nears End; Exchange Server 5.5 to Follow in One Year

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2004/dec04/12-03NTSupport.asp

REDMOND, Wash. -- Dec. 3, 2004 --The end of 2004 signals the end of the support lifecycle for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server. Microsoft is following through on previously announced plans to retire public and technical support and security updates on Dec. 31. The support lifecycle for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation ended June 30.

Microsoft is retiring support for these products because the technology is outdated and can expose customers to security risks. The company recommends that customers who are still running Windows NT 4.0 begin migrations to newer, more secure Microsoft operating system products as soon as possible; those who already have upgraded to Windows Server 2003 are reporting improved security, lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and increased productivity. In particular, Windows Server 2003 runs 160 percent faster as a file server and 345 percent faster as a domain server. The result: an IT environment designed to be significantly less vulnerable to attack and that provides an average reduction in TCO of 20-30 percent.

....

Custom Support for Exchange Server 5.5

Dec. 3 - 2004 -- Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 will follow the custom support policy announced today for Windows NT 4.0. There will be a full two years of custom support available for Exchange Server 5.5 customers after extended support ends at the end of 2005. The goal of Microsoft’s Support Lifecycle policy is to provide consistent and predictable guidelines for product support availability at the time of product release, while also keeping customers secure as they migrate to a new platform.

Customers are realizing the benefits and cost savings of moving to Exchange Server 2003 through improved support for mobile users, better security, manageability and availability. Many Exchange Server 5.5 customers have already migrated, as evidenced by a reduction of approximately 25 percent in the Exchange Server 5.5 install base over the last year.

Microsoft has been in communication with customers over the past year about the lifecycle support policy and the associated end of support life dates for Exchange Server 5.5. In an effort to give customers more flexibility to plan and execute a migration to Exchange Server 2003, Microsoft waived the fees for the first year of extended support.

In 2005, Exchange Server 5.5 customers will continue to receive security updates at no charge, but will be required to enroll in the Extended Support program and pay a fee to obtain non-security hot-fixes. Customers needing additional time beyond 2005 to complete their Exchange 5.5 migrations have the option to enroll in a for-fee, custom support program beginning on Jan. 1, 2006.

Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Upgrade Information Web site

883522 E-mail messages that contain a virus remain in the SMTP local delivery queue after you configure Intelligent Message Filter in Exchange Server 2003

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=DAFC0AD9-6A5C-4BFF-857D-5699E9A611E8&displaylang;=en

KB: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=883522

This update resolves problems that were found in the SMTP of Exchange 2003 since Exchange 2003 SP1 was released.

After you install and configure Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter on your Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer, e-mail messages that contain a computer virus or a worm program are not permanently deleted. Instead, these e-mail messages remain in the SMTP local delivery queue in Exchange 2003 until they time out.

Note These e-mail messages also remain in the following folder on the Exchange 2003 computer:
%PROGRAMFILES%\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\queue\

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You have a Virus Scanning API (VSAPI) version 2.5-based virus scanning program installed.
Note Virus Scanning API is also referred to as Virus API (VAPI) or Antivirus API (AVAPI).

  • You have Intelligent Message Filter installed. In this scenario, the following behaviors occur:
  1. Exchange 2003 receives an e-mail message and directs this e-mail message to the intended recipient.
  2. The e-mail message is received by the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and is scanned for viruses by the VSAPI version 2.5-based virus scanning program.
  3. If the e-mail message contains a virus or a worm program, VSAPI version 2.5 requests that the message be deleted.
Note The option for an antivirus program vendor to configure their program to automatically delete e-mail messages is a new feature in VSAPI version 2.5.
    4. The e-mail message is deleted.
In this scenario, the message that was directed to the recipient is deleted because it contains a virus or a worm program. However, the original e-mail message remains in the SMTP local delivery queue until Exchange 2003 receives a notification of a successful message delivery. Exchange 2003 repeatedly retries delivering the e-mail message to the recipient. Each delivery attempt causes the scanned message to be deleted by VSAPI version 2.5.

Sony selects 25 March 05 for Euro PSP launch

Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/12/02/sony_psp_euro_rollout/

Sony will launch the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in Europe on 25 March 2005, according to the company's own retailer-oriented sales and marketing documentation.

So notes UK website Spong, which claims to have seen said "official" information.

That Sony has been planning to ship PSP over here by the end of Q1 2005 is no great surprise. Certainly, the company's recent annual strategy meeting featured a company roadmap which clearly pegged the handheld's US and European release to late fiscal 2004 - Sony's current financial year ends 31 March 2005, six days after the European launch date cited by Spong.

DWP kills 60k PCs in Windows XP upgrade lash-up

It's old news that was kept quiet, but still interesting.  I wonder if the guy who pressed the wrong button is still employed?

Source:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/26/dwp_network_outage/

Most of the desktop computers in the UK's Department for Work and Pensions were paralysed for four days on Monday, when a failed upgrade took them offline. The outage, covering 75-80 per cent of the DWP's 80,000 PCs, is one of the largest in the UK Government's not entirely impressive IT history.

And possibly one of the most costly. According to staff reports the outage occurred on Monday afternoon, disconnecting staff email, benefits processing and Internet and intranet connectivity. According to one, a limited network upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP was taking place, but instead of this taking place on only a small number of the target machines, all the clients connected to the network received a partial, but fatal, 'upgrade.'

Another source says that the DWP was trialing Windows XP on a small number ("about seven") of machines. "EDS were going to apply a patch to these, unfortunately the request was made to apply it live and it was rolled out across the estate, which hit around 80 per cent of the Win2k desktops. This patch caused the desktops to BSOD and made recovery rather tricky as they couldn't boot to pick any further patches or recalls. I gather that MS consultants have been flown in from the US to clear up the mess." EDS is also thought to be flying in fire brigades.

If these claims are true the DWP could face grave difficulties in rolling all of its machines back to their previous, working state. Staff from Microsoft and EDS are reported to have been working around the clock to dig the Department out of the pit, while speaking on the Today programme this morning a spokeswoman amusingly insisted that the Department's systems had not in fact fallen over. They were working, it was merely the case that "80 per cent of desktop computers are not connecting through to the mainframe systems."

So that's cleared that up then. She added that the emergency payments system was "working perfectly." The emergency system appears to have kicked in on Wednesday, and the Department was preparing a press release on the matter yesterday. No sign of it this morning, yet.

Microsoft excluded from DoCoMo's ecosystem

Damm

Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/26/microsoft_excluded_from_docomo/

Perhaps the greatest disadvantage that Microsoft has in trying to become a major force in the mobile world is that one of the key concepts of that market, the 'ecosystem', is alien to it. Windows thrives on being a dictatorship, while the dominant mobile players sit at the center of huge webs of mutually dependent partnerships, all contributing to the products and the chain of business. This was made very clear this week when NTT DoCoMo, the most experienced company of all in building ecosystems, laid out new plans for its next generation handset architecture - plans that embrace Linux and Symbian, and specifically exclude Microsoft.

DaimlerChrysler's Chief Has Armored Mercedes Stolen

Oppps

Source: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000085&sid=aRaEXeRubjHc&refer=europe

Nov. 22 (Bloomberg) -- DaimlerChrysler AG Chief Executive Officer Juergen Schrempp had his S600 Mercedes-Benz armored limousine stolen while it was parked on a street in Stuttgart, the German city in which the carmaker is based.

The black company car, which is worth about 800,000 euros ($1 million), disappeared on the night of Oct. 26, police spokesman Klaus-Peter Arand said in a telephone interview. The limousine, which sports a 12-cylinder engine and is equipped with a broadcasting device to help retrieve the car, hasn't yet been found, the police said.

Schrempp, 60, has been CEO of DaimlerChrysler since 1995. Hartmut Schick, a spokesman for the world's fifth-largest carmaker, confirmed the theft without giving details.

The S600 is the top limousine with the Mercedes brand. The cheapest version of the car costs 129,398 euros, according to the company's Web site. The stolen vehicle had bullet-proof windows, ``finger-thick'' steel plates as part of its chassis as well as tires designed to keep it running even when flat, Bild-Zeitung reported today.

The car was probably stolen by the ``Russian mafia,'' the German newspaper said, citing an unidentified investigator.

ActiveSync Troubleshooting Guide - Synchronization Errors

This looks good

Source: http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/activesync/syncerrors.htm

Synchronization Errors:

  1. First change the settings on the PC in ActiveSync - Tools - Options to not synchronize any of the options.  If ActiveSync still fails then read down further for assistance. If it does not fail then re-enable the different types of data to sync one at a time to identify where the problem is occurring.

  2. If you get an error beginning with 80XXXXXX (where XXXXXX is any hexadecimal number) you have a corrupted record in Outlook.  See ActiveSync - Identifying Unresolved Items to assist you with fixing this issue.

  3. If you get a 628 error while connecting your Pocket PC, Handheld PC, or Palm-size PC to your Windows NT desktop, you need to use the guest account to sign in instead of the user you used.

  4. If you run the Aventail 3.21 VPN client then you need to make the following changes to avoid hanging in ActiveSync whenever you remove your Pocket PC from the USB cradle:.

Run the Aventail config tool. Select the "Advanced" tab. Check "Secure all applications except listed" check box in the "Applications to Secure" group box. Click "Modify List". Add "wcescomm.exe" and "WCESMgr.exe" located in the ActiveSync program directory. Most likely "C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync". Click "OK" then "File -> Save" and then reboot.

  5. If you are using the HummingBird's SOCKS client, you must add a direct statement in your SOCKS.CNF file in order to allow the addresses used by the Pocket PC, Handheld PC, or Palm-size PC's serial connection to connect to your PC instead of sending them to the SOCKS server:
    DIRECT 192.168.55.0 255.255.255.0

  6. If you install ActiveSync 3.5 or later with Outlook 97 (unsupported), you can synchronize your calendar, contacts and tasks.  Synchronizing Inbox does not work in this configuration.

  7. If you are connecting via the serial port with your Pocket PC, Handheld PC or Palm-size PC, and you are having errors synchronizing, consider reducing the baud rate from 115.2k to 19,200 or 9,600 on your device.   ActiveSync will adjust to the correct baud rate.  I have found that this is especially true for Handheld PC 2.0 and Palm-size PC 1.0 devices.

  8. If ActiveSync gets stuck, you can end the program using the Task Manager and end the tasks WCESCOMM and WCESMGR.   To restart ActiveSync, just click on the ActiveSync icon on your desktop. You can use the free utilities KILLSYNC to end the tasks or RESYNC to end the tasks and restart ActiveSync.
  9. If you see the error "Synchronization cannot be started because you are not able to log onto the network and access information. Restart your desktop computer and synchronize again. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator. " in Outlook 2000.  You will need to reconfigure Outlook.   See Microsoft Article Q243029 for details.

  10. If you see the error "Microsoft Outlook Synchronization ActiveSync cannot log on to Microsoft Outlook. Make sure Microsoft Outlook is installed and functioning correctly. You may need to restart your computer." in Outlook 2002.  You will need to reconfigure Outlook.  See Microsoft Article Q324864 for details.

  11. If you see the error "Microsoft Outlook Synchronization - Synchronization could not start because this desktop computer could not access necessary information. Restart this desktop computer and synchronize again. If this persists reopen Outlook, click on help then run detect and repair. Synchronization cannot start because you cannot log on to the network, and access information, restart your desktop and synch again. If problems persist, contact your network administrator." in Outlook 2000.  You need to reconfigure Outlook. See Microsoft Article Q276563 for details.

  12. When synchronizing via the network or RAS the Pocket PC automatically disconnects when done.  If you want to stay connected when synchronizing via a network or RAS then on your Pocket PC click Start - ActiveSync and select Tools - Options from the menu select the Schedule tab.  Uncheck the box labeled "When synchronizing remotely with my PC, disconnect when complete".  This option just affects PC synchronization.
  13. If you see the following error in Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
    WCESCOMM.EXE - Error in application
The application couldn't be initialized correctly (0xc0000142)
    a. See Elron Software's fix for this.  You will need to search Elron's support database for the error code to see the fix.
b, If you have Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition version 8.0.x upgrade to 8.1.x.
  14. Your PC attempts to connect to the internet whenever you synchronize. This is caused by ActiveSync attempting to start internet passthrough.  You can disable this by launching ActiveSync, clicking on File - Connection Settings.  Uncheck the option "Allow Network and RAS..."  Also if you have an Inbox POP3 or IMAP4 account on your Pocket PC 2002, select the ActiveSync profile.  This will prevent your Pocket PC from using the PC for internet pass through to access e-mail.
  15. If you see "AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2416 ModName:
mso9.dll ModVer: 9.0.0.3821" then you have the Personal Folders Backup installed.  Personal Folders Backup is not compatible with ActiveSync so you must uninstall it.  See Microsoft Article
    Q324864 for details.
  16. If you keep seeing the Add/Remove Programs window this is because a desktop installation has not been completed to your Pocket PC.  If you want to eliminate this, you need to uninstall the last program you installed from the list of installed applications.  There may be more than one application that has to be uninstalled if you do not recall when this started to occur.
  17. If Inbox does not sync and you are using Hotmail, you cannot sync e-mail.  See Handango for a list of applications that sync Hotmail.
  18. If you installed ActiveSync 3.5/3.6/3.7 and then upgraded your desktop OS to Windows XP, you may not be able to synchronize. You need to check and see if ActiveSync is running in compatibility mode by right clicking on the program or shortcut.  If it is, then remove these settings and you should be able to sync.
  19. If you are unable to sync and you have installed McAfee and are getting "unresolved items"  where you are synchronizing or receive "network error", disable the HAWK e-mail option.
  20. If you see a message "There was no response from your mobile device while checking for out-of-date appointments" and you have Resco Picture Viewer (the Axim has this in ROM), delete the file picViewSync.dat in the \Windows directory on your Pocket PC.  Then you should be able to sync again.
  21. Unable to sync Inbox?  Did you restore on your Pocket PC 2002?  If so then you need to delete the Inbox accounts, sync and then set them back up.
  22. If you see "Attention Required" and you are using Windows 98, Outlook 2000 and see "Error Number:0x80070725 Description: Incompatible version of the RPC stub" when attempting to uninstall an application you have a problem with a corrupted DLL such as OLEAUT32.dll, Olepro32.dll, Asycfilt.dll, Stdole2.tlb.  file. See InstallShield's KB article.  This issue is related to installing the wrong operating system/ version of DLLs for DCOM.
  23. If you have McAfee Virusscan or McAfee Clinic installed with the Privacy Service and you cannot sync, try uninstalling ActiveSync and then the Privacy service.  Then reinstall ActiveSync and then the Privacy service according to McAfee support.
  24. If you see the error "A synchronization partnership cannot be created because the source database name is too long. Choose OK to copy the database without synchronizing it or choose Cancel to end this operation, rename your source database, and try again later." then you need to login as an Administrator to synchronize the Access database.
  25. If you are unable to synchronize with Outlook, I suggest that you use Outlook's Detect and Repair option.  Before beginning, you will need your Outlook CD to complete the Detect and Repair.  To begin, open Outlook and click on Help - Detect and Repair.
  26. If you are unable to sync using Wi-Fi or Ethernet it could be because you have an open connection to a server on your network.  If you are using Windows Media Player, File Explorer or other 3rd party network share application, ActiveSync will attempt to connect using that connection and fail.  You need to disconnect from network connections to sync.
  27. You cannot sync database  files because the option to select the database files is no longer displayed in ActiveSync - Tools - Options.  1. Perform a full backup of the Pocket PC so you can restore in the event of a failure 2. Remove the Pocket PC from the cradle/cable and select File - Delete Partnership on ActiveSync on the PC. 3. Perform a Detect and Repair on Outlook using the menu item Help - Detect and Repair 4. Reboot your PC 5. Hard reset your Pocket PC 6. Once the reboots/resets are complete, reconnect your Pocket PC to your PC and setup a partnership.
  28. If you see "Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. Winsock services could not start due to critical error 10054" then try soft resetting your Pocket PC.  Then attempt to sync.
  29. If you are unable to sync Inbox and you have install Mozilla, Mozilla replaces the MAPI.DLL with a 6k file.  To fix this problem, Close Outlook then Search for and find all copies of MAPI32.DLL and delete or rename them.  Start Outlook and answer YES to the "fix" question. Mozilla is compatible with the Outlook version of MAPI32.DLL which is about 150k.
  30. If you are synchronizing with a PC that uses Exchange, you may see an error like "ActiveSync Error: The following task cannot be written to Microsoft Outlook due to error 870070057. The item will be skipped. Task   Ok, Skip, Cancel"  You can sync if you change Exchange Server, Tools - Task View and check "Save Task Order". (Use Simple List if that item is greyed out with your current view.) It will take a minute or three, and after that, synching returns to normal.
  31. If you see the error message "Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The .DLL file for the information service could not be found. MAPI was unable to load the information service Pstprx.dll. Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured." then install the latest Office XP Service Pack or follow the work around at Microsoft article 293058.
  32. If you see a message from McAfee VirusScan about a script that wcesmgr.exe is running, allow it to run.  This is ActiveSync opening Outlook.  See the McAfee Script Issue for details.
  33. If you are using a Windows Mobile 2003 and you are seeing an error with database file conversions or applications that use database files on your Pocket PC that are expecting the files in the Pocket PC 2002 format, then you may need the Database Conversion Wizard Power Toy.
  34. If you are seeing errors like 0x80004005 or think "Socket Error: 0xB7" and you have installed iSilo, it may be caused by iSilo attempting to synchronize.  In order to sync correctly, you will need to uninstall iSilo.  This issue has been reported to iSilo.
  35. If you have more than one partnership and you wish to sync via ethernet or Wi-Fi you need to make sure you have selected the correct PC to sync with. This is done on the Pocket PC by launching ActiveSync and clicking on Tools - Options and selecting the PC you wish to sync with.
  36. If you are using ethernet or Wi-Fi to synchronize you need to make sure that the network connection in the Connection Manager is setup to use Work as the default connection.   The Connection Manager is available at Start - Settings - Connections - Connections (and Advanced on Windows Mobile 2003).
  37. If you have problems with ActiveSync loading up Outlook for synchronization (for example, OUTLOOK.EXE crashes), try disabling any Outlook add-ins or COM add-ins. In Outlook, go to Tools - Options - Other - Advanced Options - Add-In Manager and COM Add-Ins and disable all of the add-ins. If this fixes the problem, re-enable each add-in in turn until you have found the one that causes the crash. Then contact the vendor of that add-in for an update.   An example of an add-in that was causing problems is SpamSource (The latest version of SpamSource now works correctly with ActiveSync).
  38. If you are using Windows XP and you see the message “TCP/IP Network Transport Not Installed” then  click on Start -> Run and enter the command “netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt”, click OK.  You must your computer for the changes to take effect.
  39. If you install McAfee Virusscan version 7.0 (without the firewall support) on a PC with Windows XP it may prevent all TCP/IP from working. Using Windows XP rollback does not reconfigure TCP/IP.  McAfee recommends that users uninstall Virsscan 7.0 with a CSLSPREG /UNREGISTER.  You may need to contact McAfee support to obtain this program since I am unable to find it as of 11/23/03.
  40. If you are using Outlook 2003 in cache mode, you may experience intermittent problems.  ActiveSync is not compatible with Outlook 2003 in cache mode.  You should disable cache mode to use ActiveSync correctly.
  41. If you are using Word 2003 and are trying to synchronize files or copy them to your Pocket PC you may receive an error when ActiveSync attempts to convert the .DOC files to Pocket Word format. To work around this problem configure ActiveSync to not convert the .DOC files since the Pocket PC can open them directly.  This is done by clicking on Tools - Options - Rules - Conversion Settings and selecting the Desktop to Device tab.  Then select Microsoft Word Document and click on the Edit button.  Then click on the drop down menu and select No Conversion and click Ok, Ok, Ok.

Europe's gamers could be waiting until January to hear when they can get their mitts on Nintendo's handheld device, Nintendo DS, says gamesindustry.biz.

David Yarnton, Nintendo UK general manager, told a press conference to look out for details in the New Year.

Film studios snub Sony DVD format

Fight, Fight, Fight, Fight!

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4053875.stm

Three Hollywood studios have chosen to embrace next-generation DVD technology backed by Toshiba, snubbing a rival product promoted by Sony.

Paramount, Universal and Warner Brothers are to use a high definition DVD format backed by Toshiba and NEC.

Their decision is a setback for Sony which famously lost the battle to set a standard for video cassette recorders when its Betamax lost out to JVC's VHS.

Toshiba expects sales of HD-DVDs to hit 300bn yen ($2.9bn; £1.5bn) by 2010.

Old trick, but hard to find

Found this and thought it worthy of letting you all know about it

Source: http://winzenz.blogspot.com/2004/11/old-trick-but-hard-to-find.html

Have you ever wanted to modify the Save As default list that is displayed on the left when downloading a file in Internet Explorer? Sure you can always use the Drop-down menu and select a different location, but I always tend to save things into different folders (such as C:\Downloads, etc.) instead of using the built-in folders that are available. I also find it tedious to have to select C:\ from the drop-down list, then browse that folder each time I want to save something.
