Taters

Some people never seem motivated to participate, but are just content to watch while others do the work.
They are called "Spec Taters".

Some people never do anything to help, but are gifted at finding fault with the way others do the work.
They are called "Comment Taters".

Some people are very bossy and like to tell others what to do, but don't want to soil their own hands.
They are called "Dick Taters".

Some people are always looking to cause problems by asking others to agree with them. It is too hot or too cold, too sour or too sweet.
They  are called "Agie Taters".

There are those who say they will help, but somehow just never get around to actually doing the promised help.
They are called "Hezzie Taters".

Some people can put up a front and pretend to be someone they are not.
They are called "Emma Taters".

Then  there are those who love others and do what they say they will. They are always prepared to stop whatever they are doing and lend a helping hand. They bring real sunshine into the lives of others.
They are called "Sweet Po Taters".

320702 XCON: MTA Journaling Does Not Work to an SMTP Custom Recipient on February 28 of Years That Are Not Leap Years

It's that day again!

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320702

Message journaling may not work if the following conditions exist:

  • The journaling is on February 28 of a year that is not a leap year (such as 2002 or 2003).
  • You configured the Exchange Server 5.5 message transfer agent (MTA) message journaling component.
  • You selected a custom recipient as the journaling recipient.

The journaling recipient may receive the following non-delivery report (NDR):
Your message

  To:      User
  Subject: TEST
  Sent:    Sat, 2 Sep 2000 17:32:31 -0400

did not reach the following recipient(s):

MTA Journaling on Sat, 2 Sep 2000 17:32:31 -0400
Unable to deliver the message due to a communications failure
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a=
;p=MICROSOFT;l=TESTSERVER000902173231AE003300

Remember those old disaster movies from the 70s? If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all: the plucky survivors manage to beat the odds and escape the disaster, but not before taking a beating from wind, water, fire, bullets, or other undesirables. And don't forget the outages that can be caused by human error or technical failure

SMTP Virtual Server Myths Exposed

So you use Exchange 2003?  Read this!  Scott really does know is shit!

Source: http://blogs.msdn.com/exchange/archive/2005/02/25/380481.aspx

... I think it is time to clear up the second largest area of confusion with Exchange SMTP transport: SMTP virtual servers.

The short of it is, with the exception of the gateway server scenario, I generally recommend staying away from modifying or adding SMTP virtual servers, particularly on mailbox servers. I'll explain my reasons by first providing some of the scenarios that are misunderstood.  Below I will explain each of the following:

   - Myth: Virtual Servers On The Same Machine Are Internally Connected
   - Myth: Routing Happens Before Selecting A Virtual Server

   - Myth: Modifying SMTP Virtual Servers Is Mostly Harmless
   - Myth: Virtual Server IP Address Will Be Used For Outgoing Connections

Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/25/orange_spv_c550/

Mobile phone network Orange's next smart phone has made its web debut in the form of an allegedly leaked pic of the handset.

The SPV C550, as it's being dubbed, appears to be the successor to the current SPV C500, made by Taiwan's HTC, which calls it the Typhoon. The C550 also appears to be an HTC product, an updated version of the manufacturer's Amadeus music-oriented handset, better known as the T-Mobile SDA Music

872822 A global event sink is not triggered after you restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Source:  http://support.microsoft.com/?id=872822

After you install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is running Exchange 2003, you experience the following symptom:

  • If you restart the computer or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, a global event sink that you have configured is no longer triggered.

Note If you have a mailbox event sink configured, that mailbox event sink is still triggered when you restart the computer or when you restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

CAUSE
This problem occurs because of a problem with the verification code that was introduced in Exchange 2003 SP1. In Exchange 2003 SP1, code is included to verify whether an event binding has a particular variable set. If this variable is not set, the event binding is not registered. Exchange global event sink bindings do not set this particular variable. However, the verification code that was introduced in Exchange 2003 SP1 does not account for the global event sink binding not having this variable set. Therefore, the global store event sink registration fails when the information store is re-mounted.

893707 You cannot use client certificates that are installed on the PocketPC device to authenticate when you connect by using EAS

This is one of mind :-D

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893707

When you use Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) with a PocketPC 2003 device, you cannot use client certificates that are installed on the PocketPC device to authenticate when you connect by using EAS.

CAUSE
The EAS client program does not support using client certificates for authentication. The EAS client uses username and password authentication.

MORE INFORMATION
While PocketPC 2003 and Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 support the use of client certificates, the EAS client and Pocket Internet Explorer components do not. Windows Mobile 2003 VPN and WiFi technologies can use personal certificates for authentication.

For additional information about how to configure client certificate mappings, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

SEATTLE - A teenager was sentenced Friday to 1 1/2 years in prison for unleashing an Internet worm that crippled 48,000 computers in 2003.

Jeffrey Lee Parson, 19, of Hopkins, Minn., will serve his time at a low-security prison and must also perform 10 months of community service.

He could have gotten 10 years behind bars, but the judge took pity on him, saying his neglectful parents were to blame for the psychological troubles that led to his actions

TT1091575 Accessing the RPC over HTTP services causes connecting issues, "Exchange server is unavailable" error for Dell™ PowerEdge™ systems.

You might not be able to get to the source without logging on to Dell's website

Source:
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1091575&c=us&l=en&s=biz&cs=555

RPC over HTTP services causes connecting issues.
If the user is experiencing connection problems even if they configured all the required settings for RPC over HTTP on the server side, it may be because the RPC Proxy Server Extension is not loading correctly. For example, if the user tries to access exchange server, they may get an Exchange server is unavailable error. In addition to that error, an error message similar to the following 404 error is logged in the IIS log on your RPC proxy server:

2004-01-01 13:13:31 192.100.100.1 RPC_IN_DATA /rpc/rpcproxy.dll FQDN.company.com:6002 443 domain\username 192.100.100.2 MSRPC 404 2 1260

For the RPC over HTTP to run correctly, the Web Server Extension should use the rpcproxy.dll present in the C:\Windows\system32\Rpcproxy\ directory.

NOTE:  If RPC over HTTP proxy service is not installed, deleting the file C:\Windows\system32\rpcproxy.dll before installing the RPC over HTTP service does not require this workaround.

Modify the file Rpcproxy.dll to allow web server extensions to run under IIS.

  1. Click the Start button, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on your RPC proxy server.
  2. Under the icon for your RPC proxy server, click Web Service Extensions.
  3. In the right pane, click RPC Proxy Server Extension, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Required Files tab.
  5. Check the file path for the file Rpcproxy.dll.

NOTE:  For Dell factory-installed systems, the path will be shown as C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcproxy.dll but the correct location for this file is C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcproxy\ rpcproxy.dll.

  6. If the path is incorrect, select the file and click Remove.
  7. To add the correct extension, click Add.
  8. Browse to the C:\Windows\System32\rpcproxy\ directory and select rpcproxy.dll.
  9. Click the Allow button to allow web server extensions to run under IIS,
  10. Click Apply.
  11. After configuring the web server extension, delete the RPCPROXY.DLL from the C:\Windows\system32\ directory.

NOTE:  More information regarding this issue can be found in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:
833401 - "How to configure RPC over HHTP on a single server in Exchange Server 2003"

Verification

The Required Files tab in RPC Proxy Server Web Server Extension Properties should show the file path as C:\Windows\system32\rpcproxy\rpcproxy.dll. The used by section in the General tab may still show the path as C:\Windows\system32\rpcproxy.dll.

TUC to IT workers: 'You're working too hard'

I Couldn't possibily comment :-o

Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/24/it_workers_tuc/

IT workers put in more unpaid overtime than almost any other profession, according to the TUC (Trades Union Congress). The organisation is calling on managers to recognise the extra time their staff puts in, and has declared Friday 25 February "Work your proper hours day".

IT managers work an average of nine hours and 12 minutes per week on top of their official, contracted hours, a new league table reveals. The TUC calculated that if managers did all this unpaid overtime at the start of the year, they wouldn't start to be paid until 8 March. If they were paid for the extra hours, their salaries would increase by more than £10,000.

US woman sues over ink cartridges

Humm!

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4293427.stm

A US woman is suing Hewlett Packard (HP), saying its printer ink cartridges are secretly programmed to expire on a certain date.

The unnamed woman from Georgia says that a chip inside the cartridge tells the printer that it needs re-filling even when it does not.

The lawsuit seeks to represent anyone in the US who has purchased an HP inkjet printer since February 2001.

HP, the world's biggest printer firm, declined to comment on the lawsuit.

HP ink cartridges use a chip technology to sense when they are low on ink and advise the user to make a change.

Police: Student Installs Device On Teacher's Computer To Sell Tests

What an excellent idea - why didn't I think of that?!

Source: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=320&e=1&u=/ibsys/20050201/lo_kprc/2564763

A high school student is facing criminal charges for allegedly hooking a device up to a teacher's computer to steal test information to sell to other students, Local 2 reported Tuesday.

The student attended Clements High School, 4200 Elkins Dr., in the Fort Bend Independent School District.

Officials said the 16-year-old boy hooked up a keystroke decoder to a teacher's computer and downloaded exams in November.

"Sometime in mid-December, we got a tip that this student was selling test exams that had apparently come from a teacher's computer, so that's when the investigation began," said Mary Ann Simpson, with the Fort Bend School District.

The student confessed when he was confronted, officials said.

Today, software applications in enterprises comprise a complex maze of solutions which are implemented with a variety of technologies, platforms, services, protocols and architectures.  All the while this maze continues to expand as business demands on information technology escalate.  In the past enterprises have sought to control this complexity through open solutions.  However, the term open has become a vendor buzz word and reality shows that open solutions fail to completely address the complexity.  Enterprises need solutions that provide interoperability and integration which then enable the enterprise to manage the complexity.

Grand Theft Auto firm faces 'murder training' lawsuit

The legal action was filed on behalf of the families of police force staff shot dead in Fayette, Alabama in 2003, allegedly by one Devin Thompson

Thompson was apprehended on suspicion of driving a stolen car. He is claimed by state prosecutors to have snatched a policeman's gun and shot officers Arnold Strickland and James Crump, and a dispatcher, Leslie Mealer.

The lawsuit maintains that Thompson's actions that day were inspired by the GTA series, games he is claimed to have played obsessively. The games amount to "training" for the alleged killings, the families' lawyer told local paper the

888032 Exchange Server 5.5 users cannot see recipients from a pure Exchange 2000 administrative group or pure Exchange 2003 administrative group in the Global Address List

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888032

This article describes an issue where Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 users cannot see recipients from a pure Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server administrative group or pure Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 administrative group in the Global Address List.

This issue occurs if a recipient Connection Agreement does not exist for the pure administrative group. At least one recipient Connection Agreement must exist for each administrative group or Exchange site.

To resolve this issue, you must create a new recipient Connection Agreement for the pure administrative group either by using the Exchange 2003 ADC Tools or by manually creating the Connection Agreement. This article describes how to create the recipient Connection Agreement by using both methods.

Bugs Bunny Gets a Makeover - Part II

Been doing a bit more digging and this will make you laugh.  If you search for Bug's new name "Buzz Bunny" on google you will time some links that you I suspect Warner bros do not want linked to a cartoon character like "rabbit vibrator Buzz Bunny"!

Any way, here is a picture of the "new characters".

So from left to right:

Slick (Wile E. Coyote), Spaz (Taz), Buzz (Bugs Bunny), Duck (Daffy Duck), Lexi (Lola Bunny) and Roadster (Road Runner)

Here is the "preview" movie: http://www.asifa-hollywood.org/LoonaticsPreview.mov (this is 7mb!)

893705 You receive the "An invalid dn syntax has been specified" error message when you use the Recover Mailbox Data wizard to restore a mailbox from a recovery storage group in Exchange Server 2003

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893705

When you try to use the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Recover Mailbox Data feature to restore a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 mailbox from a recovery storage group, you may receive the following error message:

Error 80072032
An invalid dn syntax has been specified

CAUSE
This issue may occur when the mailbox name contains a comma (,) character. Mailbox names may contain a comma character if they use the "Last, First" method for the Display Name field. The Exchange Server 2003 SP1 Recover Mailbox Data feature locates mailboxes by using the Display Name field.

WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use the Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Merge Wizard (Exmerge.exe) to restore information from a recovery storage group to the mailbox of the user in the regular storage group.

For information about how to obtain and use the Exmerge.exe tool, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/tools/2003.asp

Bugs Bunny Gets a Makeover

NO! You can't do that

Source:
http://www.nypost.com/commentary/22021.htm

HAS Warner Bros. gone daffy?

That's what fans of the studio's classic cartoon characters might be asking after they get a look at the new, futuristic versions of some of their favorite animated heroes, which Warner unveiled yesterday.

The Looney Tunes characters — six in all — have been "reimagined" (in studio parlance) for a new series called "Loonatics," which is set to air next fall on WPIX/Channel 11 as part of the Saturday morning Kids' WB program lineup.

The show features new versions of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, the Tasmanian Devil, Road Runner and Lola Bunny (the newest of the characters, who was introduced in the 1996 Michael Jordan movie "Space Jam").

For "Loonatics," the six characters are being projected 700 years into the future, given superpowers, and outfitted in tight-fitting, slenderizing space gear.

Apparently, falling anvils and exploding cigars are no longer enough to keep kids 6 to 11 years old entertained.

Windows Keys

Okay so I thought I would have a play and this is what I found.  You all know what the windows key look like?  It looks like a flag waving int he wind.

Any way, here are a few things about it:

Windows Key  = Displays the Start Menu
Windows Key + D = Show desktop (do it again to restore all windows to their previous state)
Windows Key + E = Open new Explorer window
Windows Key + F = Open the find files window
Windows Key + CTRL + F = Open the find computerFFwindow
Windows Key + L = Lock computer
Windows Key + M = Minimise all windows
Windows Key + SHIFT + M = Restores the minimised windows
Windows Key + R = Open Run dialog box
Windows Key + U = Open the Utility Manager

Windows Key + TAB = move through the open applications on the taskbar
Windows Key + Pause/ Break = Displays System Properties Dialog Box
Windows Key + F1 = Displays the Windows Help

If your using OneNote
Windows Key + S = If you have OneNote - this will activate Screen Clipping
Windows Key + N = Opens a New Note

You can also disable the Windows Key too:
This restriction allows you to disable the use of the Windows hotkey combinations that provide shortcuts to the Start Menu and task swapping:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PoliciesExplorer]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PoliciesExplorer]

NoWinKeys
REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
(0 = disable restriction, 1 = enable restriction)

The actual Windows Key that brings up the Start menu will still work though. The change above requires a reboot.

Internet Explorer 7

Oh yeah, looks like it coming in a beta form this summer.  Check this out:

Source: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/02/15/373104.aspx

Today at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.

First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

Why? Because we listened to customers, analysts, and business partners. We heard a clear message: “Yes, XP SP2 makes the situation better. We want more, sooner. We want security on top of the compatibility and extensibility IE gives us, and we want it on XP. Microsoft, show us your commitment.”

UK firms avoid outsourcing tech support

Now this is good news!?!

Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/14/outsourcing_touchpaper/

Shunting tech support to foreign countries is unpopular and a waste of time, according to new research.

Even though there is a "worrying" shortage of skilled IT staff in the UK, nine out of ten UK organisations are actively trying to keep their IT support in-house.

Of the 200 public and private sector organisations quizzed as part of the research by UK software house Touchpaper, fewer than three in ten outsource any part of their IT support service.

Just three per cent of companies would be prepared to shunt their IT support overseas even though it can often work out much cheaper.

Using ADModify to Change Exchange Specific AD User Attributes in Bulk

You might find this interesting!

Source: http://www.msexchange.org/articles/ADModify-Change-Exchange-Specific-AD-User-Attributes.html

In this article I will give you an insight into how you, with the use of ADModify, can modify Exchange attributes on Active Directory (AD) users in bulk. If you’re an Exchange administrator in a relatively large organization you will quickly learn you can’t afford to be without ADModify.

ADModify is a tool that originally was developed and used by the Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) group, the guys who created the tool were, more specifically, Dan Winter & Marc Nivens. Through the years ADModify has evolved and is not only a tool used internally by Microsoft PSS anymore, but also by Exchange admins all around the world. ADModify can be used to modify all sorts of user attributes, but in this article we’ll focus on the Exchange related ones.

891121 In-Reply-To fields are lost when you move a mailbox in Exchange 2000 Server

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891121

When you use the Move Mailbox feature in Active Directory Users and Computers to move a mailbox, the In-Reply-To field is removed from the Simple Mail Transfer protocol (SMTP) header of any messages in the mailbox.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Move Mailbox operation does not retain the In-Reply-To field when the conversion from Internet format to MAPI format occurs.

892514 The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may stop responding when you try to back up your Exchange 2003 database files by using a program that uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892514

When you try to back up your Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 database files, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may stop responding. This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The computer is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • The program that you use to back up the database uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service in Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
  • You dismount the database after the Volume Shadow Copy Service backup is finished.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a deadlock condition that may occur when you dismount the Exchange database after the Volume Shadow Copy Service backup operation is finished.

This deadlock condition occurs if all the following conditions are true:
  • The freeze period of the Volume Shadow Copy Service backup operation starts.
  • During this freeze period, Exchange receives a commit operation, or Exchange receives another operation that performs logging and that then waits for the log files to be flushed.
  • You dismount the Exchange database after the Volume Shadow Copy Service backup operation is finished.Under these conditions, the operation that Exchange receives enters the buffer in Exchange. However, the signal to flush the log file does not run because of the Volume Shadow Copy Service freeze. When the freeze is finished, the thread that performs the thaw operation does not try to flush the log. Therefore, the operation that Exchange receives waits indefinitely. Because of this, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service stops responding.

RESOLUTION

893706 You may not be able to synchronize an .ost file with an Exchange mailbox after you migrate a mailbox in Exchange Server 2003

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;893706

In Micrososft Exchange Server, you may not be able to synchronize an offline folder (.ost file) with an Exchange mailbox. This behavior may occur when the following conditions are true:
  •  You use the Exchange Server Migration Wizard to move the Exchange mailbox for an Exchange profile.
  • Then, you use the Microsoft Exchange Profile Update tool to update that profile. In this scenario, Microsoft Outlook may start in recovery mode when you log on to the Exchange profile. Additionally, you may not be able to access your offline files and your folders that are in your .ost file.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you do not preserve the .ost file by running the Migration Wizard in clone mode before the destination mailbox is created. If you run the Migration Wizard after the destination mailbox has been created and has been logged on to, the Migration Wizard runs in default mode. When the Migration Wizard runs in default mode, the destination mailbox has a different globally unique identifier (GUID) than the original mailbox. Therefore, the .ost file will not synchronize with the new mailbox.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, run the Migration Wizard in clone mode to preserve .ost files. To do this, follow these steps:
1. On the Exchange Server 2003 computer, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
2. Type the following:
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin\mailmig.exe /m
In this case, C:\Program Files is the path where Exchange Server 2003 is installed

Log parser is a powerful, versatile tool that provides universal query access to text-based data such as log files, XML files and CSV files, as well as key data sources on the Windows® operating system such as the Event Log, the Registry, the file system, and Active Directory®. You tell Log Parser what information you need and how you want it processed. The results of your query can be custom-formatted in text based output, or they can be persisted to more specialty targets like SQL, SYSLOG, or a chart.

Most software is designed to accomplish a limited number of specific tasks. Log Parser is different... the number of ways it can be used is limited only by the needs and imagination of the user. The world is your database with Log Parser.

Nokia licenses Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol for integration with Nokia’s business-optimized devices

Bloody Hell! This is a bit of a result for Microsoft and Exchange! ... but mabe not such a good one for the PocketPC!

Nokia to provide easy wireless access to Exchange Server 2003 data, including wireless email, calendar and contacts in future mobile devices

CANNES, France – Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) Enterprise Solutions business group today announced that it has licensed Microsoft Corp’s Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol to enable wireless and direct synchronization between Microsoft Exchange Server, part of the Windows Server System and future Nokia enterprise mobile devices. The terms of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.

The collaboration between the two companies will allow Nokia to build a direct over-the-air synchronization link between Nokia enterprise mobile devices running on Nokia’s Series 60 and Series 80 software platforms and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 for email and other personal information management (PIM) data, such as calendar information and contacts. By integrating the Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol into Nokia devices, enterprise customers are provided with an easy-to-use, secure, wireless email solution that is cost-effective and can be deployed quickly and easily. Nokia will continue to support the OMA Data Synchronization protocol and its own Nokia PC Suite, a local connectivity solution that utilizes OMA Data Synchronization for PCs and Nokia mobile devices

“Nokia is committed to answering the broader needs of enterprises across the world by giving them access to the widest possible choice of email and PIM solutions on the market today and tomorrow,” said Mary McDowell, senior vice president and general manager, Nokia’s Enterprise Solutions business group. “Licensing this protocol provides our customers with a seamless solution for integrating our mobile devices into their back-end.”

“Microsoft’s goal is to deliver flexible, integrated solutions that fuel innovation for our partners and provide our customers with a variety of options to enable secure, wireless and direct synchronization to their mobile device.” said Pieter Knook, senior Vice President, Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “The licensing of Exchange Server ActiveSync is an example of Microsoft’s drive towards interoperable technologies that will help to lower IT costs for our customers."

According to leading IT market research firm IDC*, 84 percent of businesses that either already have or are planning in the next year to integrate wireless devices with corporate systems will look to deploy email first, and then follow with personal information management, calendar applications and customer relationship management or sales force automation applications at the same time or soon after. To drive broader adoption of mobile email, Nokia will provide a combination of robust email and synchronization solutions giving enterprises the ability to deploy mobile email to a wider range of users within their company. Collaboration between emerging and established email solutions players will help to speed and facilitate the adoption of enterprise application mobility.

Flying on Someone Else's Airline TIcket

I just love this blog ... but sometime it scares me!

Source: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/02/flying_on_someo_1.html

The vulnerability is obvious, but the general concepts are subtle. There are three things to authenticate: the identity of the traveler, the boarding pass, and the computer record. Think of them as three points on the triangle. Under the current system, the boarding pass is compared to the traveler's identity document, and then the boarding pass is compared with the computer record. But because the identity document is never compared with the computer record -- the third leg of the triangle -- it's possible to create two different boarding passes and have no one notice. That's why the attack works.

Hackers sued for tinkering with Xbox games

Damm

Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/10/tecmo_sues_xbox_game_hackers/

In the first case of its kind, a California video game maker is suing an entire community of software tinkerers for reverse engineering and modifying Xbox games that they legally purchased.

Tecmo, Inc., a subsidiary of a Japanese company, announced a federal lawsuit Wednesday against Mike Greiling of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Will Glynn from Davie, Fla, for alleged violations of US copyright law and the controversial Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

....

The lawsuit claims the ninjahacker.net users decompiled the code to several Tecmo titles, including Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive 3, and Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, and figured out how to create their own "skins" that change the appearance of game characters. They swapped modding techniques and hundreds of custom skins over the website message board.

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS04-035.mspx

This Bulletin has been reissued

Subsequent to the release of this bulletin, it was determined that a variation of the vulnerability addressed also affects Exchange 2000 Server. Microsoft has updated the bulletin, on February 8, 2005, with additional information about Exchange 2000 Server and also to direct users to a security update for this additional affected platform.

This update resolves a newly-discovered vulnerability. A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) component that is provided as part of the affected software. The vulnerability is documented in the Vulnerability Details section of this bulletin.

An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts that have full privileges.

SMTP Vulnerability - CAN-2004-0840: A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Windows Server 2003 SMTP component because of the way that it handles Domain Name System (DNS) lookups. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by causing the server to process a particular DNS response that could potentially allow remote code execution. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. The vulnerability also exists in the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Routing Engine component when installed on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3.

A Brief History of Exchange Server

This is a good read

Source: http://blogs.brnets.com/michael/archive/2005/02/07/347.aspx

<SNIP>

Microsoft Exchange Server started its life as Exchange Server 4.0, shortly after Microsoft discovered the Internet.  Prior to Exchange, Microsoft had another email product called Microsoft Mail. The last version of MS-Mail was 3.5 and it was released in September of 1995. Microsoft hoped that by numbering the first version of Exchange as 4.0, it would convince users to migrate quickly.

Microsoft goes Hollywood: "Halo" to hit big screen

Source: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002171529_halomovie05.html

Microsoft may finally be getting into a business where "blue screen of death" could actually be a good thing.

The company is going from writing code to writing a movie script adapting the "Halo" video-game franchise, according to a report yesterday in Daily Variety.

It's wrapping up a million-dollar deal to hire Alex Garland, the writer of the movie "28 Days Later" and the novel "The Beach," to bring "Halo" to the big screen, according to the report.

Variety said it confirmed the deal with Creative Artists Agency, which represents Microsoft and Garland in Hollywood. The agency hired Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley in 2003 to represent video-game makers in Hollywood deals.

Microsoft to Acquire Enterprise Anti-Virus Security Provider Sybari Software

Yeah Baby!

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/feb05/02-08SybariPR.asp

REDMOND, Wash. -- Feb. 8, 2005 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that it has signed definitive agreements to acquire Sybari Software Inc., a leading provider of security products that help more than 10,000 businesses worldwide protect their messaging and collaboration servers from viruses, worms and spam. Microsoft will use this acquisition to further provide its enterprise customers with new solutions to help protect them from malicious software.

"Enterprise customers face a complex set of attacks through their e-mail and collaboration infrastructure," said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of the Security Business and Technology Unit at Microsoft. "Through this acquisition, we're excited to be able to provide customers with a server-level anti-virus solution that delivers advanced file and content-filtering capabilities and the use of multiple scan engines. In this way, customers get choice, high-quality performance and the most up-to-date protection possible."

The planned acquisition of Sybari Software will play a key part in Microsoft's enterprise security strategy, providing anti-virus technologies that shield communications servers and supply customers with multiple-engine protection that can help with increased detection rates of malicious software. In a recent ICSA Labs survey, e-mail attachments were cited as the means of infection in 88 percent of virus incidents in corporate environments, a clear indication that further innovation is required.

Microsoft Improves Certification for IT Professionals with Performance-Based Testing

Humm, could be interesting

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2005/feb05/02-01PerformanceTesting.asp

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 1, 2005 -- The Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) program is one of the most successful certification programs in the industry with over 1.7 million individuals credentialed all over the world. The MCP credential is for professionals who have the skills to successfully implement a Microsoft product or technology as part of a business solution in an organization.

Microsoft wants to offer certification that helps assure MCPs are experienced and qualified to help with their IT problems. But traditional multiple choice tests don't always do a complete job of testing IT professionals' ability to perform practical, real-world tasks end to end. So the Microsoft Learning team has developed a new system of testing that evaluates on-the-job skills of an IT pro.

Reinforcing its commitment to the MCP community, Microsoft is about to incorporate performance-based testing in all core Windows 2003 exams. Through simulated environments, IT professionals taking exams for certification will now be required to demonstrate their knowledge of products and processes they may encounter on the job. This dramatic change in the testing protocol is designed to increase the value and credibility of the MCP credential.

To learn about the new testing methodology, PressPass spoke with Al Valvano, Lead Product Manager with Microsoft Learning, and representatives of the two exam delivery partners participating in the program - psychometrician Paul Jones, an expert on testing with Thomson Prometric, and Randy Trask, VP of Market Development for Pearson VUE.

Online gambling outfit Golden Palace yesterday took temporary charge of the substantial assets which it recently secured for £422 on a eBay auction, viz; the legally-displayable portion of 27-year-old Angel Brammer’s 42GG breasts. For fifteen days the Glaswegian lass will proudly display Golden Palace's temporary tattoo - applied by a local artist who must think that Xmas has come early.

Chinese Zodiac

It's that time of the year again, and we have been having heated discussion to what sign we are.  Most web sites show years, but that is not totally tight.  For example my wife and I where born in 1970, she has a birthday in January and I have one in Feburary.  People say we are both the same sign, but we are not.  Check out the PROPER dates here:

MSN Messenger hit by double-whammy worm

Watch out for this one!

Source: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39186536,00.htm

A Bropia variant is using MSN Messenger to spread, and is packaged with a second more damaging worm

The latest variant of the Bropia worm was discovered on Wednesday evening. It infects users of MSN Messenger by sending itself as a picture of a roast chicken with tan lines. It also releases a second more dangerous worm called agabot.ajc on the infected user's computer.

Adam Biviano, senior systems engineer at antivirus firm Trend Micro, said that although there have only been a handful of reported infections, Trend Micro has declared a medium risk alert because of the worm's potential to spread and steal users' bandwidth.

Pocket IE susceptible to browser-based attacks

Source: http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/3533.html

Pocket IE is pre-installed in ROM of all Windows Mobile devices, including Pocket PC and smartphone. Unfortunately the situation with Pocket IE is similar like with IE (Internet Explorer) for Windows XP: Microsoft has not enough (if any) motivation to improve and innovate in this area! Therefore no wonder, that there are several security problems, that can be exploited by hackers

Live Communications Server 2005 Document: Enterprise Pools and Windows 2003 Network Load Balancing

LCS_2005_NLB.doc is a 21 page word doc

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=649ee26c-0a3c-4fb0-81c6-42afc3cb08e4&displaylang=en

Microsoft® Office Live Communications Server 2005 Enterprise Edition supports high availability by allowing multiple Enterprise Edition servers to run as part of a server pool against a back-end Microsoft SQL Server™ database. Client requests need to be directed to the appropriate Enterprise Edition server to help ensure that the load is balanced evenly across the Enterprise Edition servers. This can be accomplished with a hardware load balancer or by using Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 Network Load Balancing (NLB) for scaling servers.

This document describes the steps needed to configure NLB for a Live Communications Server 2005 deployment. Network Load Balancing in Windows Server 2003 does not allow for sharing an adapter card for more than one network. All communications in and out of the adapter card are under the control of Windows Server 2003 NLB.

For the configuration in this document, each of the Enterprise Edition servers will have two adapter cards. The first card will be used for NLB and the second will be used for inter-Enterprise Edition server communication in a pool. The second adapter card will also be used for interoperation with Active Directory® directory service, DNS, the domain controller, and other pools or servers within the enterprise. NLB will be configured to work in Unicast mode.

891005 The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service unexpectedly quits when you try to synchronize information by using Quest Exchange Migration Wizard or Quest Migration Manager in Exchange Server 2003

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891005

When you use Quest Exchange Migration Wizard or Quest Migration Manager to try to synchronize information from a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service unexpectedly quits. In this scenario, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms:

  • The following event is logged in the Application log:Event Source:

Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Date: date
Time: time
Type: Error
User: N/A
Computer: computername
Description: The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).

  • If you try to move the particular folder where you experience this problem to another location by using the Exchange Tasks Wizard, you receive the following error message:

An unexpected, unknown error has occurred. MAPI or unspecified service provider. ID no: 80040102-0000-00000000

CAUSE
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You run a program that uses the IExchangeExportChanges::Synchronize method to retrieve hierarchy changes from a mailbox or from a public folder in Exchange 2003.

Note Quest Exchange Migration Wizard and Quest Migration Manager use this method. The IExchangeExportChanges::Synchronize method is an open interface that we recommend for incremental change synchronization.
  • The mailbox or public folder contains a folder that is missing some MAPI properties.

This problem may occur in a scenario where a folder is copied to a public folder and then replicated to another Exchange computer. When this folder is replicated, only some of the rules that it contains are replicated to the other Exchange computer. Because this folder is missing certain MAPI properties, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not process the folder correctly. Therefore, when you try to programmatically obtain hierarchy changes from the mailbox or from the public folder where this folder is stored, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service quits.

Note You may also experience this problem with other programs that use the IExchangeExportChanges::Synchronize method to synchronize data with Exchange 2003.

198673 XADM: Single Instance Storage Ratio is Low

Rob found this today and I thought it deserved to be shared.  The real eye opener is:

There is a common misconception that the primary benefit of single instance storage is that it greatly reduces the storage space requirements for user data on a mail server. The truth is that its primary benefit is to greatly enhance delivery efficiency of messages sent to large distribution lists. Disk space savings from single instance storage are transient and drop off very quickly over time.

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=198673

After an Exchange Server computer has been in service for a few months, you may notice that the Single Instance Storage Ratio is declining. The lower this number is, the less storage benefit you are receiving from single instance storage. If this number reaches 1, there is effectively no storage benefit being obtained from single instance storage.

This is normal behavior and should be expected to occur. The longer a database has been in service, the lower you should expect the ratio to be. The factors discussed in this article apply not only to Exchange Server but to any messaging system that implements single instance storage.

MORE INFORMATION
Single instance storage means that if the same message is sent to two users on the same server, that only one copy of the message is inserted in the database. Both users access the single instance of the message to read it. If this were the only message in the database, the single instance storage ratio for this database would be 2.

If the message were sent to four people, two on your own server and two on another, only a single copy of the message would have to travel to the other server to deliver the message to both users.

Thus, single instance storage ensures that only one copy of a message is needed on any given server, no matter how many users receive the message.

You may monitor your storage ratio in Performance Monitor using the MSExchangeIS Private and MSExchangeIS Public objects Single Instance Ratio counter.

For Example: Suppose a message is sent to 500 mailboxes on a single server. This gives you a huge initial ratio of 500. Within a day or so, 80 percent of the recipients are likely to have deleted the message, plunging your ratio to 100. Over the next week, probably 98 percent will delete it, cutting your ratio to 10. Making the drop-off curve even steeper is the general rule that the larger the distribution list, the shorter the life of the message.

The most important benefit of single instance storage in sending this message was that it got delivered with approximately one-five hundredth of the work that would otherwise have been necessary--one copy was generated instead of 500. Between servers, single instance storage greatly reduces the network bandwidth required to transmit a message with a large distribution list.

Even a "mature" server is likely to have a storage ratio slightly greater than 1, but you should not count on single instance storage at all when doing capacity planning. In some cases, the ratio may even drop slightly below 1 because of miscellaneous database overhead

ID theft surge hits US consumers

Ohh is it going to get like Enemy of the State?

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4227293.stm

Almost a quarter of a million US consumers complained of being targeted for identity theft in 2004, official figures suggest.

The Federal Trade Commission said two in five of the 635,173 reports it had from consumers concerned ID fraud.  ID theft occurs when criminals use someone else's personal information to steal credit or commit other crimes. Internet auctions were the second biggest source of fraud complaints, comprising 16% of the total.

The total cost of fraud reported by consumers was $546m (£290m).

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4227365.stm

Details of the next generation of Microsoft's Xbox games console - codenamed Xenon - will most likely be unveiled in May, according to reports.

It was widely expected that gamers would get a sneak preview of Xbox's successor at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March.

But a Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed that it would not be at GDC.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all expected to release their more powerful machines in the next 18 months.

Telewest Broadband Lines Up New Box of TV Tricks

I know it's a bit old, but sky have just screwed me over so it gives me another option!

Source: http://ir.telewest.co.uk/phoenix.zhtml?c=76808&p=irol-newsArticle&t=Regular&id=665136

21-01-2005

Telewest Broadband has entered an agreement with Scientific-Atlanta for the supply of new personal video recorder (PVR) set-top boxes, which will be made available to its cable TV customers later this year.

The new PVR set-top box incorporates a substantial 160Gb hard drive and three video tuners, which will allow viewers to receive Telewest Broadband's digital TV service and record two programmes simultaneously while watching a third. This is a step forward from many existing PVRs, which can only manage two channels at once.

The set-top box will also allow customers to pause and instantly rewind live TV if their viewing is interrupted, so they never have to miss a moment of their favourite programmes again.

A simple on-screen menu will make the service easy to use for even the most technophobic households and, once recorded, programmes can be controlled like a DVD or video, without the hassle of tapes. The device will be able to store around 80 hours of programmes.

The Telewest Broadband PVR will also deliver high-definition TV (HDTV) content in the future - offering a significant improvement in picture quality compared with today's standard-definition digital TV broadcasts, especially on larger plasma and LCD screens.

Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer at Telewest Broadband, said: "We will make our personal video recorder set-top box available later this year, putting a stop to missed soaps, interrupted films and arguments over which programmes to record. It's a fantastic box of TV tricks that people will wonder how they ever survived without!"

The Scientific-Atlanta agreement follows this week's launch of the first phase of Telewest Broadband's new TV-on-demand service, which will offer a choice of additional movies, TV programmes and specialist content via customers' remote controls.

Eric Tveter added: "Telewest Broadband's unique combination of personal video recorder and television-on-demand services will mean our customers have the best of both worlds - freedom from the TV schedule with PVR control, and on-demand access to a wider selection of movies and TV content. It's not about offering people more TV, but giving them the freedom to watch exactly what they want, when they want."

Letter from Bill Gates about the new MSN Search service

Source: http://www.msn.co.uk/billgates/ & http://search.msn.co.uk/

  Bill Gates

I would like to introduce you to the new MSN Search service.

Based on your feedback, we’ve made MSN Search more precise and powerful, so you can quickly find the information you’re looking for.

Our mission at Microsoft is to use the power of software to solve our customers’ toughest problems. Searching the Internet today is a challenge, and it is estimated that nearly half of customers’ complex questions go unanswered. That’s why we’re proud of our new MSN Search service, a simple and powerful tool that helps you find the answers you want from sources as diverse as Web pages, images, news headlines, and Encarta.

Input from millions of our customers – including myself – was crucial to our efforts to make MSN Search the best it can be. If you have not already tried it, I encourage you to visit http://www.msn.co.uk/search now. We’d love to hear what you think, and I promise that we will continue to improve MSN based on your feedback.

Sincerely,

Bill Gates

Inland Revenue says sorry for computer glitches

Source: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1465640,00.html

Inland Revenue has lifted the threat of £100 fines and £60-a-day penalties from tens of thousands of taxpayers who tried in vain to file their tax returns over the internet in the last three days

... At first the Revenue refused to acknowledge the problems. Today, however, it apologised for the computer glitches and gave angry taxpayers 14 days' grace to resubmit their returns online. Payments will still have to be made on time.

889171 IIS Web sites do not start automatically after the server or the World Wide Web Publishing service is restarted

When a Microsoft Exchange 2000 virtual server fails over to a cluster node, Internet Information Services (IIS) Web sites that are hosted on the cluster will not start automatically after the server or the World Wide Web Publishing service is restarted.

CAUSE
This problem occurs because Microsoft Exchange resets the ServerAutoStart setting on all IIS Web sites on the cluster when an Exchange virtual server failover occurs.

RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft

IMF and the Junk E-mail folder in Outlook

Another blog from Evan worthy of a read

Source: http://blogs.msdn.com/evand/archive/2005/01/31/363935.aspxv

I’ve posted several IMF-related blog postings in the past — here, here, and here. In these posts, I’ve focused mainly on the gateway behavior of the IMF. This is because that’s really what the IMF is, of course… just the gateway behavior. But when your mailbox server is running Exchange 2003 or better, there’s a whole different angle to consider: Store behavior.

Customer: Yes I'm sure. I saw my colleague do it.
Helpdesk: Can you tell me what the password was?

Customer: Netscape.
Helpdesk: That's not an antivirus program.
Customer: Oh, sorry...Internet Explorer.

Helpdesk: Uhh..? Pardon, I don't understand your problem?
Old woman: I was working in Word and clicked the help button more than 4 hours ago. Can you tell me when you will finally be helping me?

Helpdesk: How may I help you?
Customer: I'm writing my first e-mail.
Helpdesk: OK, and, what seems to be the problem?
Customer: Well, I have the letter 'a' in the address, but how do I get  the circle around it?
