Some people never do anything to help, but are gifted at finding fault with the way others do the work. They are called "Comment Taters".
Some people are very bossy and like to tell others what to do, but don't want to soil their own hands. They are called "Dick Taters".
Some people are always looking to cause problems by asking others to agree with them. It is too hot or too cold, too sour or too sweet. They are called "Agie Taters".
There are those who say they will help, but somehow just never get around to actually doing the promised help. They are called "Hezzie Taters".
Some people can put up a front and pretend to be someone they are not. They are called "Emma Taters".

... I think it is time to clear up the second largest area of confusion with Exchange SMTP transport: SMTP virtual servers.
The short of it is, with the exception of the gateway server scenario, I generally recommend staying away from modifying or adding SMTP virtual servers, particularly on mailbox servers. I'll explain my reasons by first providing some of the scenarios that are misunderstood. Below I will explain each of the following:
- Myth: Virtual Servers On The Same Machine Are Internally Connected - Myth: Routing Happens Before Selecting A Virtual Server - Myth: Modifying SMTP Virtual Servers Is Mostly Harmless - Myth: Virtual Server IP Address Will Be Used For Outgoing Connections

After you install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is running Exchange 2003, you experience the following symptom:
Note If you have a mailbox event sink configured, that mailbox event sink is still triggered when you restart the computer or when you restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.
CAUSEThis problem occurs because of a problem with the verification code that was introduced in Exchange 2003 SP1. In Exchange 2003 SP1, code is included to verify whether an event binding has a particular variable set. If this variable is not set, the event binding is not registered. Exchange global event sink bindings do not set this particular variable. However, the verification code that was introduced in Exchange 2003 SP1 does not account for the global event sink binding not having this variable set. Therefore, the global store event sink registration fails when the information store is re-mounted.

RPC over HTTP services causes connecting issues. If the user is experiencing connection problems even if they configured all the required settings for RPC over HTTP on the server side, it may be because the RPC Proxy Server Extension is not loading correctly. For example, if the user tries to access exchange server, they may get an Exchange server is unavailable error. In addition to that error, an error message similar to the following 404 error is logged in the IIS log on your RPC proxy server:
2004-01-01 13:13:31 192.100.100.1 RPC_IN_DATA /rpc/rpcproxy.dll FQDN.company.com:6002 443 domain\username 192.100.100.2 MSRPC 404 2 1260
For the RPC over HTTP to run correctly, the Web Server Extension should use the rpcproxy.dll present in the C:\Windows\system32\Rpcproxy\ directory.
NOTE: If RPC over HTTP proxy service is not installed, deleting the file C:\Windows\system32\rpcproxy.dll before installing the RPC over HTTP service does not require this workaround.
Modify the file Rpcproxy.dll to allow web server extensions to run under IIS.
Verification
The Required Files tab in RPC Proxy Server Web Server Extension Properties should show the file path as C:\Windows\system32\rpcproxy\rpcproxy.dll. The used by section in the General tab may still show the path as C:\Windows\system32\rpcproxy.dll.

IT workers put in more unpaid overtime than almost any other profession, according to the TUC (Trades Union Congress). The organisation is calling on managers to recognise the extra time their staff puts in, and has declared Friday 25 February "Work your proper hours day".
IT managers work an average of nine hours and 12 minutes per week on top of their official, contracted hours, a new league table reveals. The TUC calculated that if managers did all this unpaid overtime at the start of the year, they wouldn't start to be paid until 8 March. If they were paid for the extra hours, their salaries would increase by more than £10,000.

A US woman is suing Hewlett Packard (HP), saying its printer ink cartridges are secretly programmed to expire on a certain date.

The lawsuit seeks to represent anyone in the US who has purchased an HP inkjet printer since February 2001.
HP, the world's biggest printer firm, declined to comment on the lawsuit.
HP ink cartridges use a chip technology to sense when they are low on ink and advise the user to make a change.

A high school student is facing criminal charges for allegedly hooking a device up to a teacher's computer to steal test information to sell to other students, Local 2 reported Tuesday.
The student attended Clements High School, 4200 Elkins Dr., in the Fort Bend Independent School District.
Officials said the 16-year-old boy hooked up a keystroke decoder to a teacher's computer and downloaded exams in November.
"Sometime in mid-December, we got a tip that this student was selling test exams that had apparently come from a teacher's computer, so that's when the investigation began," said Mary Ann Simpson, with the Fort Bend School District.
The student confessed when he was confronted, officials said.

Architect Forum: Interoperability & Integration
26 April 2005 09:45 - 26 April 2005 18:00 (GMT) GMT, London. Today, software applications in enterprises comprise a complex maze of solutions which are implemented with a variety of technologies, platforms, services, protocols and architectures. All the while this maze continues to expand as business demands on information technology escalate. In the past enterprises have sought to control this complexity through open solutions. However, the term open has become a vendor buzz word and reality shows that open solutions fail to completely address the complexity. Enterprises need solutions that provide interoperability and integration which then enable the enterprise to manage the complexity.

HAS Warner Bros. gone daffy?
That's what fans of the studio's classic cartoon characters might be asking after they get a look at the new, futuristic versions of some of their favorite animated heroes, which Warner unveiled yesterday.
The Looney Tunes characters — six in all — have been "reimagined" (in studio parlance) for a new series called "Loonatics," which is set to air next fall on WPIX/Channel 11 as part of the Saturday morning Kids' WB program lineup.
The show features new versions of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, the Tasmanian Devil, Road Runner and Lola Bunny (the newest of the characters, who was introduced in the 1996 Michael Jordan movie "Space Jam").
For "Loonatics," the six characters are being projected 700 years into the future, given superpowers, and outfitted in tight-fitting, slenderizing space gear.
Apparently, falling anvils and exploding cigars are no longer enough to keep kids 6 to 11 years old entertained.

Today at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.
First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.
Why? Because we listened to customers, analysts, and business partners. We heard a clear message: “Yes, XP SP2 makes the situation better. We want more, sooner. We want security on top of the compatibility and extensibility IE gives us, and we want it on XP. Microsoft, show us your commitment.”
Now this is good news!?!

Shunting tech support to foreign countries is unpopular and a waste of time, according to new research.
Even though there is a "worrying" shortage of skilled IT staff in the UK, nine out of ten UK organisations are actively trying to keep their IT support in-house.
Of the 200 public and private sector organisations quizzed as part of the research by UK software house Touchpaper, fewer than three in ten outsource any part of their IT support service.
Just three per cent of companies would be prepared to shunt their IT support overseas even though it can often work out much cheaper.

In this article I will give you an insight into how you, with the use of ADModify, can modify Exchange attributes on Active Directory (AD) users in bulk. If you’re an Exchange administrator in a relatively large organization you will quickly learn you can’t afford to be without ADModify.
ADModify is a tool that originally was developed and used by the Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) group, the guys who created the tool were, more specifically, Dan Winter & Marc Nivens. Through the years ADModify has evolved and is not only a tool used internally by Microsoft PSS anymore, but also by Exchange admins all around the world. ADModify can be used to modify all sorts of user attributes, but in this article we’ll focus on the Exchange related ones.

Nokia to provide easy wireless access to Exchange Server 2003 data, including wireless email, calendar and contacts in future mobile devices
CANNES, France – Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) Enterprise Solutions business group today announced that it has licensed Microsoft Corp’s Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol to enable wireless and direct synchronization between Microsoft Exchange Server, part of the Windows Server System and future Nokia enterprise mobile devices. The terms of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.
The collaboration between the two companies will allow Nokia to build a direct over-the-air synchronization link between Nokia enterprise mobile devices running on Nokia’s Series 60 and Series 80 software platforms and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 for email and other personal information management (PIM) data, such as calendar information and contacts. By integrating the Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol into Nokia devices, enterprise customers are provided with an easy-to-use, secure, wireless email solution that is cost-effective and can be deployed quickly and easily. Nokia will continue to support the OMA Data Synchronization protocol and its own Nokia PC Suite, a local connectivity solution that utilizes OMA Data Synchronization for PCs and Nokia mobile devices
“Nokia is committed to answering the broader needs of enterprises across the world by giving them access to the widest possible choice of email and PIM solutions on the market today and tomorrow,” said Mary McDowell, senior vice president and general manager, Nokia’s Enterprise Solutions business group. “Licensing this protocol provides our customers with a seamless solution for integrating our mobile devices into their back-end.”
“Microsoft’s goal is to deliver flexible, integrated solutions that fuel innovation for our partners and provide our customers with a variety of options to enable secure, wireless and direct synchronization to their mobile device.” said Pieter Knook, senior Vice President, Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “The licensing of Exchange Server ActiveSync is an example of Microsoft’s drive towards interoperable technologies that will help to lower IT costs for our customers."
According to leading IT market research firm IDC*, 84 percent of businesses that either already have or are planning in the next year to integrate wireless devices with corporate systems will look to deploy email first, and then follow with personal information management, calendar applications and customer relationship management or sales force automation applications at the same time or soon after. To drive broader adoption of mobile email, Nokia will provide a combination of robust email and synchronization solutions giving enterprises the ability to deploy mobile email to a wider range of users within their company. Collaboration between emerging and established email solutions players will help to speed and facilitate the adoption of enterprise application mobility.

The vulnerability is obvious, but the general concepts are subtle. There are three things to authenticate: the identity of the traveler, the boarding pass, and the computer record. Think of them as three points on the triangle. Under the current system, the boarding pass is compared to the traveler's identity document, and then the boarding pass is compared with the computer record. But because the identity document is never compared with the computer record -- the third leg of the triangle -- it's possible to create two different boarding passes and have no one notice. That's why the attack works.

REDMOND, Wash. -- Feb. 8, 2005 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that it has signed definitive agreements to acquire Sybari Software Inc., a leading provider of security products that help more than 10,000 businesses worldwide protect their messaging and collaboration servers from viruses, worms and spam. Microsoft will use this acquisition to further provide its enterprise customers with new solutions to help protect them from malicious software.
"Enterprise customers face a complex set of attacks through their e-mail and collaboration infrastructure," said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of the Security Business and Technology Unit at Microsoft. "Through this acquisition, we're excited to be able to provide customers with a server-level anti-virus solution that delivers advanced file and content-filtering capabilities and the use of multiple scan engines. In this way, customers get choice, high-quality performance and the most up-to-date protection possible."
The planned acquisition of Sybari Software will play a key part in Microsoft's enterprise security strategy, providing anti-virus technologies that shield communications servers and supply customers with multiple-engine protection that can help with increased detection rates of malicious software. In a recent ICSA Labs survey, e-mail attachments were cited as the means of infection in 88 percent of virus incidents in corporate environments, a clear indication that further innovation is required.

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 1, 2005 -- The Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) program is one of the most successful certification programs in the industry with over 1.7 million individuals credentialed all over the world. The MCP credential is for professionals who have the skills to successfully implement a Microsoft product or technology as part of a business solution in an organization.
Microsoft wants to offer certification that helps assure MCPs are experienced and qualified to help with their IT problems. But traditional multiple choice tests don't always do a complete job of testing IT professionals' ability to perform practical, real-world tasks end to end. So the Microsoft Learning team has developed a new system of testing that evaluates on-the-job skills of an IT pro.
Reinforcing its commitment to the MCP community, Microsoft is about to incorporate performance-based testing in all core Windows 2003 exams. Through simulated environments, IT professionals taking exams for certification will now be required to demonstrate their knowledge of products and processes they may encounter on the job. This dramatic change in the testing protocol is designed to increase the value and credibility of the MCP credential.
To learn about the new testing methodology, PressPass spoke with Al Valvano, Lead Product Manager with Microsoft Learning, and representatives of the two exam delivery partners participating in the program - psychometrician Paul Jones, an expert on testing with Thomson Prometric, and Randy Trask, VP of Market Development for Pearson VUE.

Microsoft® Office Live Communications Server 2005 Enterprise Edition supports high availability by allowing multiple Enterprise Edition servers to run as part of a server pool against a back-end Microsoft SQL Server™ database. Client requests need to be directed to the appropriate Enterprise Edition server to help ensure that the load is balanced evenly across the Enterprise Edition servers. This can be accomplished with a hardware load balancer or by using Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 Network Load Balancing (NLB) for scaling servers.
This document describes the steps needed to configure NLB for a Live Communications Server 2005 deployment. Network Load Balancing in Windows Server 2003 does not allow for sharing an adapter card for more than one network. All communications in and out of the adapter card are under the control of Windows Server 2003 NLB.
For the configuration in this document, each of the Enterprise Edition servers will have two adapter cards. The first card will be used for NLB and the second will be used for inter-Enterprise Edition server communication in a pool. The second adapter card will also be used for interoperation with Active Directory® directory service, DNS, the domain controller, and other pools or servers within the enterprise. NLB will be configured to work in Unicast mode.

Rob found this today and I thought it deserved to be shared. The real eye opener is:
There is a common misconception that the primary benefit of single instance storage is that it greatly reduces the storage space requirements for user data on a mail server. The truth is that its primary benefit is to greatly enhance delivery efficiency of messages sent to large distribution lists. Disk space savings from single instance storage are transient and drop off very quickly over time.
After an Exchange Server computer has been in service for a few months, you may notice that the Single Instance Storage Ratio is declining. The lower this number is, the less storage benefit you are receiving from single instance storage. If this number reaches 1, there is effectively no storage benefit being obtained from single instance storage.
This is normal behavior and should be expected to occur. The longer a database has been in service, the lower you should expect the ratio to be. The factors discussed in this article apply not only to Exchange Server but to any messaging system that implements single instance storage.
MORE INFORMATIONSingle instance storage means that if the same message is sent to two users on the same server, that only one copy of the message is inserted in the database. Both users access the single instance of the message to read it. If this were the only message in the database, the single instance storage ratio for this database would be 2.
If the message were sent to four people, two on your own server and two on another, only a single copy of the message would have to travel to the other server to deliver the message to both users.
Thus, single instance storage ensures that only one copy of a message is needed on any given server, no matter how many users receive the message.
You may monitor your storage ratio in Performance Monitor using the MSExchangeIS Private and MSExchangeIS Public objects Single Instance Ratio counter.
For Example: Suppose a message is sent to 500 mailboxes on a single server. This gives you a huge initial ratio of 500. Within a day or so, 80 percent of the recipients are likely to have deleted the message, plunging your ratio to 100. Over the next week, probably 98 percent will delete it, cutting your ratio to 10. Making the drop-off curve even steeper is the general rule that the larger the distribution list, the shorter the life of the message.
The most important benefit of single instance storage in sending this message was that it got delivered with approximately one-five hundredth of the work that would otherwise have been necessary--one copy was generated instead of 500. Between servers, single instance storage greatly reduces the network bandwidth required to transmit a message with a large distribution list.
Even a "mature" server is likely to have a storage ratio slightly greater than 1, but you should not count on single instance storage at all when doing capacity planning. In some cases, the ratio may even drop slightly below 1 because of miscellaneous database overhead

Details of the next generation of Microsoft's Xbox games console - codenamed Xenon - will most likely be unveiled in May, according to reports.
It was widely expected that gamers would get a sneak preview of Xbox's successor at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March.
But a Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed that it would not be at GDC.
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all expected to release their more powerful machines in the next 18 months.

Telewest Broadband has entered an agreement with Scientific-Atlanta for the supply of new personal video recorder (PVR) set-top boxes, which will be made available to its cable TV customers later this year.
The new PVR set-top box incorporates a substantial 160Gb hard drive and three video tuners, which will allow viewers to receive Telewest Broadband's digital TV service and record two programmes simultaneously while watching a third. This is a step forward from many existing PVRs, which can only manage two channels at once.
The set-top box will also allow customers to pause and instantly rewind live TV if their viewing is interrupted, so they never have to miss a moment of their favourite programmes again.
A simple on-screen menu will make the service easy to use for even the most technophobic households and, once recorded, programmes can be controlled like a DVD or video, without the hassle of tapes. The device will be able to store around 80 hours of programmes.
The Telewest Broadband PVR will also deliver high-definition TV (HDTV) content in the future - offering a significant improvement in picture quality compared with today's standard-definition digital TV broadcasts, especially on larger plasma and LCD screens.
Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer at Telewest Broadband, said: "We will make our personal video recorder set-top box available later this year, putting a stop to missed soaps, interrupted films and arguments over which programmes to record. It's a fantastic box of TV tricks that people will wonder how they ever survived without!"
The Scientific-Atlanta agreement follows this week's launch of the first phase of Telewest Broadband's new TV-on-demand service, which will offer a choice of additional movies, TV programmes and specialist content via customers' remote controls.
Eric Tveter added: "Telewest Broadband's unique combination of personal video recorder and television-on-demand services will mean our customers have the best of both worlds - freedom from the TV schedule with PVR control, and on-demand access to a wider selection of movies and TV content. It's not about offering people more TV, but giving them the freedom to watch exactly what they want, when they want." Ends

Inland Revenue has lifted the threat of £100 fines and £60-a-day penalties from tens of thousands of taxpayers who tried in vain to file their tax returns over the internet in the last three days
... At first the Revenue refused to acknowledge the problems. Today, however, it apologised for the computer glitches and gave angry taxpayers 14 days' grace to resubmit their returns online. Payments will still have to be made on time.

I’ve posted several IMF-related blog postings in the past — here, here, and here. In these posts, I’ve focused mainly on the gateway behavior of the IMF. This is because that’s really what the IMF is, of course… just the gateway behavior. But when your mailbox server is running Exchange 2003 or better, there’s a whole different angle to consider: Store behavior.
Doh!
Trendy handheld Blackberry devices could cause damage to users' thumbs, doctors are warning.
Sales of the £200 gadget, which can be used to email, page and phone, have boomed in recent years with celebrities such as David Beckham using them.
But US and UK doctors said repetitive use could cause arthritis or harm tendons in the thumb.
"The thing is the thumb is designed flex and rotate in all directions, it works differently from the fingers " Professor Sean Hughes, Imperial College London
