DeKalb police shoot carjacking suspect

A teenage carjacking and kidnapping suspect was shot and wounded by DeKalb County police early Tuesday.

Police said 17-year-old Justin Knox, who was hospitalized in stable condition, rammed into several police cars as he tried to flee during a car stop about 2 a.m. on Tunbridge Wells Road near Lithonia.

Police had followed the stolen Chevrolet Malibu into the neighborhood off Young Road near Redan Middle School.

Police spokesman Ariel Toledo said the car, stolen from a woman about 1:15 a.m. at the Wal-Mart on nearby Fairington Road, pulled into a driveway, and officers ordered the driver to get out.

Knox put the car in reverse and struck several police cars, Toledo said. The officers fired at the car, Toledo said.

Four officers were involved in the car stop but Toledo said he didn't know how many had fired weapons at the car. No officers were injured in the incident.

Shortly before officers saw the stolen Malibu, it was allegedly used in the armed robbery of two men making a withdrawal from an ATM on Rockbridge Road.

The three suspects in that robbery were in the Malibu and in a black Ford F-150 pickup truck, Toledo said.

The pickup was stolen about 7:30 p.m. Monday, and the truck's owner kidnapped and driven to a cemetery on Giles Road, where he was released unharmed.

Police were still looking for the two suspects in the pickup. The truck was found about noon Tuesday, abandoned in the 5000 block of Mountain Springs Circle in Lithonia.

Knox will be charged with four counts of armed robbery, one count of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault and four counts of aggravated assault on police officers.

The shooting occurred in front of Daniel Cannon's home. Cannon said he and his family were awakened by about five rapid shots.

"I didn't know what to think," Cannon said. "We were like, 'What is going on?' It's something that I wouldn't want to wake up to again."

The shooting is being investigated by DeKalb police, the GBI, and the DeKalb district attorney's office, Toledo said.

Last year, DeKalb police shot and killed 12 suspects.

Activists and relatives of some of the slain suspects have staged protests and demanded an independent investigation.

A special grand jury is investigating those cases and DeKalb police use of force procedures and training.
