Fishing and Boating

Time was you could rent a boat at nearly any waterside park or marina on Long Island. Blame insurance companies, lawyers, regulations, liability and congestion for their lack these days. Still, there are a few places where a family can drop a few bucks to take a boat out for the day and, with any luck, come back with dinner in the form of a fluke or striped bass:

Scotty's Marina and Fishing Station, Point Lookout: Scotty's offers 16-foot skiffs that can fit three to four passengers comfortably, and they come complete with a 6 horsepower motor (filled with gas), lifejackets, oars and an anchor. It costs $65 for a full day, $45 for a half day, and if you want to row without the motor it's $35. There's also a $25 deposit. Reservations are required on weekends and holidays.

Silly Lily Fishing Station, East Moriches: A fishing skiff that fits four with a fully fueled 8 horsepower engine is $102 for the day and comes with oars, anchor and safety equipment. There are plenty of nice fishing spots in the bay, don't try to take the boat out through the sometimes treacherous Moriches Inlet. Silly Lily also offers rowboats, kayaks and sailboats for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 people.

Uihlein's Marina, Montauk: The rental boats here are a bit more complicated, refined, and expensive. No skiffs, but some opportunities to take a 26-foot center console out for some fishing or cruise around the harbor in a 20-foot deck boat. Rentals can be done by the hour or for eight hours. A deposit is required and fuel is not included.

Strong's Marine, Mattituck: A variety of boats for fishing to cruising to waterskiing is available for daily, three-day, seven-day and even monthly rental. Boating experience is required to rent one of the boats, and lessons are available for novices. Online reservations are available at www.strongsmarine.com.
