In a crackdown on the mushrooming illegal use of the
painkiller OxyContin, federal agents staged raids on Long Island yesterday,
charging three people, including a Massapequa doctor, with illegal distribution
of the drug.
The cost of cleaning up the 25 toxic former
manufactured-gas plant sites on Long Island and New York City could top $1
billion, a Suffolk legislator said yesterday, citing a 2003 study commissioned
by KeySpan Corp., which is responsible for the cleanup.
