STRUGGLE CONTINUES ON IMMIGRATION DEAL. Senate Republicans
and Democrats struggled yesterday over final details of a deal that would
fortify the border and grant quick legal status to millions of illegal
immigrants living here. Among the sticking points were how much family ties
should count toward green cards for future immigrants and how to treat new
temporary guest workers, who for the most part would probably be barred from
gaining permanent residency. The emerging compromise among senators and the
White House would set the stage for a Senate debate next week.
