Introduction

Create a Product Detail Page is a means of listing a new product in our Amazon.com stores that is not currently found there. New products will appear alongside products offered by merchants and by Amazon.com itself. Pages become a permanent part of our catalog, and you--along with other sellers--can list copies of the product for sale through Amazon Marketplace.

Benefits include the following:

  • Customers can find pages through searches within related stores, and--for some stores--via browse.*
  • Buyers can purchase these new products through Marketplace, adding copies to the shopping cart.
  • Products can be added to Wish Lists.
  • Marketplace sales benefit from a wide range of payment options, including Amazon gift certificates.

Our Create a Product Detail Page feature is currently in beta and available only to Pro Merchant Subscribers. During this beta phase we'll be testing different features to ensure Amazon.com provides the best possible experience for Marketplace sellers. Even though this feature is in beta, everything works, so if you are a Pro Merchant, feel free to create product detail pages and start selling your Marketplace items on those same pages. During the beta period of this feature, you must use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher as your browser.

(* Products in our Books, Music, DVD, Video, and Electronics Stores are search-only at this time. In other eligible stores, products can be located through both search and browse.)

Eligible Stores

Currently, only the following stores are eligible for this service:

  • Baby
  • Books
  • Camera & Photo
  • Computer & Video Games
  • Electronics
  • Kitchen, Home & Garden
  • Music
  • Musical Instruments
  • Pet Supplies
  • Software
  • Sporting Goods
  • Tools & Hardware
  • Toys & Games
  • Video & DVD
  • Everything Else

Products in our other stores are restricted, and pages cannot be created for them at this time. We do have plans to extend this service to other stores in days to come, and we ask sellers not to list restricted products until the appropriate store is available. Listing restricted products is prohibited, and we will remove product pages found to be in violation; we may also take steps to close a seller's account.

It is possible to list "everything else" items that do not fit in current categories, such as stamps, posters, or other similar products. As long as the product is not associated with one of our restricted stores, it's okay to go ahead and make a page for it.

Product Restrictions

As mentioned, some product lines and stores are restricted at this time. These ineligible stores are: Apparel & Accessories, Beauty, Cell Phones & Plans, Gourmet Food, Jewelry & Watches, Magazines, Office Products, Health & Personal Care.

Additionally, sellers must adhere to Amazon.com rules for the creation of new product detail pages. You can review our content prohibitions and rules under Marketplace Seller Offenses & Prohibited Content.

Duplicate product pages are not allowed. This includes products listed on our other Amazon.com Web sites. When you submit product details, Amazon.com will check to see if a matching page already exists in our catalogs. If it does, that product will not be eligible for new page creation. Sellers should determine whether we already offer a product before attempting to make a new page.

Product Identifiers

We require standard product identifiers for certain stores. For Music, Video, DVD, Video Games, Software, Electronics, Kitchen & Housewares, or Camera & Photo Store items, your product must have a UPC. You are not required to provide an ISBN when creating a page in our Books store, but if an ISBN is available for the title, the ISBN should be used when creating the page. You can read more about ISBNs and UPCs here.

If you have a product of your own design that you'd like to obtain an ISBN or UPC for, you will find more information at the following Web sites:

Creating a Page

The steps for creating a new product detail page are outlined below. If you would like to see a step-by-step illustration of what the process looks like, we suggest that you also take a moment to review our Create a Product Detail Page walk-through. Or, if you're ready to create a page, click here to get started. (Note: the link to create a product detail page will only appear for Pro Merchants.)

Note: It is only possible to list pages one at a time, through the page-creation form. Volume tools are not available at this time.

Searching for a Product

You must first determine whether a product already exists. Duplicate product listings are not allowed. You can reach a product search page by visiting your Seller Account and clicking on "Create a product detail page in our catalog." The search form on the next page will let you check Amazon.com for a matching product. If your search doesn't locate a match, you may continue on to begin creating a new product page.

Classifying a Product

In this step, you'll choose your product's category, subcategory, and the type of product it is. As with other steps, the page-creation form will prompt you through this process. Choose carefully: it will not be possible to edit these elements of a product after it is fully created.

If you are having trouble determining which category your item falls in, you may want to use the category search option, which appears above the category list. Simply enter keywords for your product into the search box, and our system will provide a category suggestion.

Adding Product Details

In this step, you will enter the product name, manufacturer or publisher, and a description. Required information will vary depending on the product type. If you need help or examples, each field in the form provides a link to such information.

The product detail page description is not the place to add a personalized description about the item you have. If your item has a scratch or lacks a box, for example, this is the wrong place to mention it. You will do that later, when you list your item for sale on Marketplace. Please remember that the product detail page will be used not just by you, but by other sellers.

The description field is limited to 2000 characters. Shorter descriptions of fewer than 500 characters will typically appear online within minutes. Longer descriptions will take 1-2 business days to appear online.

After you submit your product details, we will evaluate your contribution. If you've supplied all of the required information and we determine your product is unique, it will be added to the catalog at this point. You will then have the opportunity to add an optional image and review your submission.

After your product is submitted, you will receive a success page with a summary of basic details, including your ASIN or ISBN. You may immediately proceed to list your copy in Marketplace. The product will also become available to any other sellers who wish to list Marketplace products.

Creation Time Frame

All product detail pages should be created within just a few minutes. However, it may take 1 to 4 days for products to become searchable. Images may take up to 24 hours to appear.

Images

When you create a product detail page, you have the option of adding up to eight images to your page. You can do this when you first create the page, or you can edit the page later. Images are intended to represent the general characteristics of the product, and not your particular copy. It is not appropriate to use copyrighted images of other individuals or companies for a product detail page.

When formatting your photograph:

  • Images must be free of borders.
  • Images must not have text or typeset.
  • Images must be submitted in .jpg or .tif format only.
  • Image files must be no larger than 50 kb in size.
  • Products must be recognizable in image and photographed at an angle contributing towards a buying decision.
  • Products must be in focus and well-lit.
  • Detailed images must remain visible in both the highlights and shadows.
  • Items must be outside of any packaging. Inclusion of shrink-wrap in images is prohibited.
  • Product must occupy 80% to 90% of the image area.
  • The entire product must be depicted in the image (no part of the product may be cropped out).
  • Only the product and accessories shipping with the product may be shown.

If possible, your image background should be 100% white. If this is not possible, please make sure the background is simple and clean and does not distract from the product being sold.

Images must be at least 500 pixels in length to be properly displayed in the pop-up window linked from the product detail page. Amazon.com does not enlarge images to generate larger sizes. The minimum acceptable dimensions for an image are 165 x 250 pixels.

Common Format and Content Errors

The following are some of the more common errors our content review team sees when correcting pages:

  1. Offer-specific details. Information specific to your copy of an item should not be included in a catalog page. Instead, it should be included in your Marketplace listing.
  2. Long titles. Titles should include the product name only, not descriptive details.
  3. All caps or all lower-case. It is not appropriate to use all caps or all lower-case lettering in titles or descriptions. Pages should be visually consistent with the rest of our catalog.
  4. Multiple detail pages for the same product. You should make only one page per ASIN.
  5. Wrong category. Please work to find the category that most logically represents your product. If your product absolutely does not fit a category, please do not list it now. In the future, a suitable store may be made eligible for detail-page creation.
  6. Prohibited items. If an item is prohibited, we will delete the page. Please review our guidelines for prohibited content.
Editing a Page

If you are the creator of a detail page, you can edit certain information about it. Once a page is live, just click to "Edit product detail pages that you've created" through your Seller Account.

The pages you've made will not be listed in your Seller Account. You will need the ISBN or ASIN of a product to edit it. This 10-digit number or alpha-numeric string will be provided after you successfully make a product detail page. If you've listed your copy in Marketplace, the ISBN/ASIN is accessible through your Marketplace listings. It is also located in the URL of the product detail page itself, and you can find it there once the page is searchable.

It is not possible to edit the category, subcategory, or product type associated with a product detail page.

In some rare cases, Amazon.com may update a page and "overwrite" it. When we do this, editing permissions will be reassigned to us and you will receive an error when trying to edit. If this occurs, we recommend that you review the page content to see whether it has been overwritten. If you can find no evidence of this, check to make sure that you are typing in your ISBN/ASIN correctly.

In the event that you are unable to make edits yourself, a Suggestion Box will appear at the bottom of each product detail page. Corrections submitted through the Suggestion Box will come to Amazon.com for review.

Amazon Catalog Information

The Amazon Catalog view reflects the information most likely to be on the products page on Amazon.com.

Because we have many contributors to our product pages, our system combines all the information provided into the best possible product page. The product page you see on Amazon.com will reflect the details you provide as well as that of others who contribute to this products information. There is no guarantee the details you supply will be visible on Amazon.com.

Deleting a Page

Sellers cannot delete product detail pages. These pages are intended to be a permanent feature in our catalog, available at any point in the future to buyers and to other sellers. If you have an error you're not able to edit, or believe that a page should be removed, please use the Suggestion Box provided. A Suggestion Box will appear at the bottom of each product detail page. Your request for a page deletion will be sent to our catalog support staff for review.

You can, of course, always close your Amazon Marketplace listing.

Customer Feedback

As the creator of a product detail page, you are responsible for its initial content. You will not be identified as the page owner on our site, however, and there is no means by which buyers can report errors directly to you. Please ensure that the information you enter is accurate and presentable.

A Suggestion Box is provided at the bottom of each product detail page. The Suggestion Box is available to all customers; information submitted will be sent to Amazon.com, and may be used by us to update the page.

If we update a page for any reason, editing permissions will be reassigned to Amazon.com. If this occurs, you will receive an error when trying to make further edits. Please use the Suggestion Box to submit updates if this occurs.
