With Corey Winkoff sidelined since April 15 with a broken collarbone, David Lau has had to take control of the Cold Spring Harbor offense.
Lau has stepped in nicely.
He had two goals and three assists, including a goal and two assists during
a four-goal third quarter that propeled No. 1 Cold Spring Harbor to a 9-3
victory over No. 4 North Shore in a Nassau Class C boys lacrosse semifinal Thursday night at Hofstra.
Cold Spring Harbor advanced to the final at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hofstra and
will play either No. 2 Manhasset or No. 3 Friends, which meet in a semifinal
at 5:30 p.m. today at Hofstra.
"I definitely think I had to take a leadership role and get the guys
going," Lau said. "We just wanted to get to the county championship."
Cold Spring Harbor (16-1) scored two goals in spans of 23 and 44 seconds in
the third. The first pair came when Jacob Ghitelman scored his second goal on a run down the right side. Then Jack Switala scored off a pass from Lau for
a 6-3 lead with 5:55 left in the third.
The second set began when Brandon Vecchio found Lau with 2:12 left; Lau assisted Vecchio, who had two goals and two assists, with 1:28 remaining for an 8-3 advantage.
Robert Grabher scored twice for North Shore (9-8) and Ronnie Irving had two
assists, but North Shore was shut out in the second half.
"We did a real nice job in the second half," Cold Spring Harbor coach
Dennis Bonn said. "Kevin Piegare played a great game and had a lot of ground
balls and takeaways. John Odierna and Dennis O'Reilly all did a nice job."
Grabher ended the half by bouncing a shot high over goalie Adam Ghitelman,
who looked as if he expected it to go low, to cut the lead to 4-3. Christian
Kennedy gave Cold Spring Harbor a 3-1 advantage when he scored off a pass from
Lau with 6:07 left in the second quarter.
"He took control," Bonn said of Lau. "I was quite upset with him early on
because he was trying to force too much action. Once we calmed him down a
little bit, he did a nice job."
