Another Roger Ebert update
by Amazon Screening Room at 4:25 PM, April 25, 2007
Following up on our earlier post about super-critic Roger Ebert, this story came to us courtesy of Ben of the Amazon Earworm blog.  Ebert says he's going to attend his Ninth Annual Overlooked Film Festival, even though he's not looking pretty.  More power to him, I say.  --David, Amazon Screening Room

I have received a lot of advice that I should not attend the festival. I'm told that paparazzi will take unflattering pictures, people will be unkind, etc. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. As a journalist I can take it as well as dish it out.... We spend too much time hiding illness. There is an assumption that I must always look the same. I hope to look better than I look now. But I’m not going to miss my festival.

Sony Battery Recall Flares Back up, Thanks to Acer
by Amazon Current at 3:25 PM, April 25, 2007
Sony's not out of the woods yet with their battery recall; now computer and laptop manufacturer Acer is planning to pull nearly 27,000 Sony-made lithium-ion batteries in a voluntary recall.  The batteries, according to Acer, have the same risk of overheating and catching on fire as the other 10 million or so batteries returned since Sony issued the original recall.  Fortunately, Acer hasn't reported any actual incidents with their affected laptop models, but according to a spokesman it was "better to be safe than sorry."

Full details on the recall, as well as instructions should you own one of the affected laptops, can be found at http://www.acerbatteryrecall.com.

The (Early) Word
by Amazon.com Bookstore at 9:57 AM, April 25, 2007
Though it won't hit bookshelves until October, the early reviews for Stephen Colbert's I Am America (And So Can You!) are in. Well, one is. And it's written by the author himself. What's the word? "A powerhouse. I laughed. I cried. I lost 15 pounds." Three out of three Amazon.com customers agree, inlcuding Boston's own "Meow House."

Trailer Park: Harry Potter, Bourne Ultimatum, Hairspray, more
by Amazon Screening Room at 9:55 PM, April 24, 2007
First impressions of upcoming movies, based on trailer (Click on the title to watch the trailer: You may need QuickTime for most)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (dir. David Yates) It's the full-length theatrical trailer (previously you just saw a teaser) and what do you get? More Hermione and Ron (who sadly, had little to do in HP4) More Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, who strangely still looks handsome without a nose), and more wand-vs.-wand battles galore. And who better to play the despicable Dolores Umbridge than sweet-looking Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake)? If there's one thing this franchise hasn't missed on yet, it's impeccable casting. (Jul. 13)

The Bourne Ultimatum (dir. Paul Greengrass): I admit the very first Bourne Identity trailer had me laughing. Matt Damon doing roundhouse kicks? Puhleez. Since then, both Bourne Identity and the superior Bourne Supremacy have turned into highly profitable, no-gloss, under-the-radar blockbusters. Damon and director Greengrass are back, as is Joan Allen's CIA contact (seriously, if you want one woman keeping the government honest, you get Joan Allen.) I'm pleased with the addition of David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) but what is Julia Stiles still doing in this franchise? And why is she dying her hair in the sink all short and cropped just like Franka Potente's in the first movie? Still, it seems our Bourne gets his memory back, and we can't wait to find out what it is. (Aug. 3)

El Catante (dir. Leon Ichaso): If you read too much Us Weekly, you'd think Marc Anthony was some kind of husband/lapdog/Svengali to wife Jennifer Lopez. In real life, he's a powerhouse of a charismatic performer with his share of acting credits (most recently Man on Fire), perfect to play the "King of Salsa" Hector Lavoe in this biopic. Here's hoping he's able to prove he's more than just Mr. J.Lo these days. Produced by Lopez, who also plays Lavoe's wife, El Cantante is the first independent film she's done since... well, My Family (Mi Familia). (Aug. 1)

Hairspray (dir. Adam Shankman) After Dreamgirls' successful box office, another Broadway hit comes to the big screen. Only instead of ingenue Jennifer Hudson we have ingenue Nikki Blonsky. Instead of dashing singing idol Eddie Murphy we have High School Musical's Zac Efron (the level of dashing-ness depends on whether you're over or under the age of 12). Instead of devious Jamie Foxx we have Michelle Pfeiffer, and instead of bootylicious Beyonce, we have John Travolta in drag. Also around for the fun: Queen Latifah, James Marsden, and Brittany Snow (American Dreams).(Jul. 20)

They're all Peppers
by Amazon Earworm at 6:59 PM, April 24, 2007

(AP) Dr Pepper is paying an undisclosed amount to have a pop-punk band live and work in a transparent bubble on New York's touristy Pier 54 for 20 days. Cameras will record the members of Cartel as they write and record a new CD. "Anyone can sponsor a concert tour," said Andrew Springate, a marketing vice president for the U.S. beverages unit of Britain-based Cadbury Schweppes PLC, which owns Dr Pepper. "We wanted to help consumers get access to how an album gets put together." Besides, he added, MTV attracts young viewers, and young people drink lots of soda. Cartel is an Atlanta-based quintet whose guitarist is appropriately named Joseph Pepper.

No surprise Bob Lefsetz hates the idea. Cartel's manager wrote in explaining their motivation:

In this day and age... we needed a way for these songs to reach as many people as possible. Yes it's a reality show, but it gets Cartel in every home in America. Great songs aren't enough anymore... MTV doesn't play videos and radio promo staffs are bored and unmotivated... The band and I felt that we could control our own destiny in a way. They can control how they act/look on TV all the while recording music. It wasn't the easiest decision, we all come from an indie background and knew what sort of response we would get. We wanted to take a chance.

I guess the questions are: Will you watch? Will you then go out and get some Dr. Pepper? And after it's over, will you buy Cartel's follow-up to Chroma (which as of this posting is actually selling pretty well--looks like Band in a Bubble has already made a bit of an impact)?

Photojournalism Turns to Cell Phones
by Amazon Current at 4:21 PM, April 24, 2007
Today's New York Times has an interesting story regarding a new partnership between Yahoo and Reuters to start using photos and video clips uploaded by you, Joe and Jane Citizen.

In one of the biggest signs yet that the lines are blurring between professional media and the public, these media bigwigs are stepping to the forefront to showcase original content captured on cell phones, digital cameras, and other portable devices.

According to the article:
Starting tomorrow, users will be able to upload photos and videos to a section of Yahoo called You Witness News. All of the submissions will appear on Flickr or a similar site for video. Editors at both Reuters and Yahoo will review the submissions and select some to place on pages with relevant news articles, just as professional photographs and video clips are woven into their news sites today.

“People don’t say, ‘I want to see user-generated content,’ ” said Lloyd Braun, who runs Yahoo’s media group. “They want to see Michael Richards in the club. If that happens to be from a cellphone, they are happy with a cellphone. If it’s from a professional photographer, they are happy for that, too.”
Participants can even get paid a fee if Reuters picks up the photo or video for distribution to its clients.

Wiimote Will Rock You
by Amazon Game Room at 4:17 PM, April 24, 2007
When an inventive new piece of video game hardware falls into the hands of a super-talented musician with mad programming skillz, amazing things can happen.

Witness the Wii Loop Machine, a marvelous new (and currently free!) piece of software for the Apple Macintosh that enables performers to use the inventive, motion-detecting, wireless Wii Remote Controller to manipulate musical loops on the fly.

Instead of hunching over their MacBooks between choruses, musicians can now flip through their carefully crafted clips with strategic flicks of their Wiimote-wielding wrists while dancing up a storm on stage.

But don't take my word for it! Check out the moves of Yann Seznec (aka The Amazing Rolo), the Scotland-based sound designer who breathed life into this fabulous project.

Way cool, no?
