The gym is boring. I go there and I get on the stair machine, and there is nothing to do except listen to music and look at fashion magazines. Vogue [1-year subscription], In Style [1-year subscription], Glamour [1-year subscription], Lucky [1-year subscription],

, Marie Claire [1-year subscription]--whatever they have, I will read it and I will want the things in it.
I see clothes, I want them. Handbags, shoes, jewelry, housewares, furniture, cosmetics--I pick out the things I like and fixate on them for a while and sometimes tear a page out and then go look them up online and maybe even buy them.
I also see perfume and, of course, want perfume. But it's hard to decide which perfume ad I should believe in. I want to be thin and tan, so maybe I should get a Calvin Klein fragrance. To be an urban sophisticate, I bet Marc Jacobs is the thing. I would dearly love to be the young daughter of a rock star and a model--maybe Shalimar Light is for me.
I can't make up my mind without actually trying the perfumes--but the idea of talking to sales girls at the beauty counters at Nordstrom is utterly abhorrent to me. So I send my mother to collect samples on my behalf.
I give each fragrance a two-day trial. Here's what I've found so far:

-- No. Too sweet/floral. And that lowercase thing is way too precious.

-- No. This reminds me of something, but I'm not sure what. It's not a bad association but not good, either. ESCADA SENTIMENT For Women By ESCADA eau de toilette -- Maybe. It's a nice light, fresh scent. But (unlike me) it's top-heavy. Fades too fast.
<product no longer available>
-- Maybe. Nice! And if I buy it on Amazon, I won't have to worry about mispronouncing that name. Oscar de la Renta Summer Dew -- No. Cloyingly sweet/tropical. Heavy on the melon, like a cheap fruit salad.

-- No. Its middle notes are reminiscent of Play-Doh.
I still haven't found one, but I will keep you updated.
