Hiking with Dad

Dad and I used our fourth coast-to-coast United Kingdom trek to discover that country's Midlands, and our shared history.

Lake George

Summer on Lake George

There are two Lake Georges. First, for most of the year, there is the sleepy resort community of 1,000 people at the southern end of pretty Lake George, a narrow, 33-mile-long lake flanked by mountains.

A summer in the Adirondacks

Paddling a canoe at dawn, my husband and I watched the mist rise on the lake. The silhouettes of the hemlock trees on the shore slowly turned from black to dark green and the sky turned from dark gray to light blue. The only sound was the dip of our paddles in the water and the mournful cry of the loon. The stress of our daily lives at home seemed a million miles away.

In Ravello, a place in the clouds

Along the Amalfi Coast, dramatic panoramas of rocky cliffs hanging over the sea are everywhere. But the views from the town of Ravello -- perched above the gulf of Salerno -- seem like a shortcut to paradise.
