About YoungMinds
Introduction
Many children and young people have difficulty growing up in today’s complex society.
Research shows that one in ten children and young people in Britain aged between five and 15 are suffering from behavioural, emotional or hyperactivity disorders. And one in five are experiencing a range of less severe mental health problems which significantly affect their daily lives. (ONS 1999). These figures are much higher in cities and areas of deprivation.
YoungMinds is the national charity committed to improving the mental health of all babies, children and young people. We exist to:
highlight the mental health issues faced by children and young people and promote a greater public awareness of their needs
meet the needs of parents through our Parents' Information Service which supports callers who are trying to cope with often severe emotional and mental health problems affecting their children and teenagers
provide information and advice on mental health issues, for children and young people, their families, and those who work with children and young people via our Publications and the YoungMinds Magazine
provide training and support through our Consultancy and Training Service for practitioners in all agencies who work with children
influence decision makers to improve services for young people and allow them to overcome or manage their problems and reach their full potential
