'''Bernard of Chartres''' (''Bernardus Carnotensis'') was a twelfth-century French Philosopher, scholar, and administrator. His date and place of birth are unknown, although it is believed that he is of Breton origin. He died in approximately 1130 and is thought to have been the elder brother of Thierry_of_Chartres. Bernard is recorded at the cathedral school of Chartres before 1117 and was chancellor until 1124. Most of what we know about his work comes through the writings of John_of_Salisbury and William_of_Conches, though a commentary on Plato has been attributed to him. The earliest attribution of the phrase 'Standing_on_the_shoulders_of_giants' is to Bernard (by John of Salisbury): : "We are like dwarfs standing [or sitting] upon the shoulders of giants, and so able to see more and see farther than the ancients." ==Works== *P.E. Dutton discussed the attribution of the Plato commentary ''''Glosae super Platonem'''' in a publication in 1984. (see P.E.
