‘Black metal church burnings’ hit France

Members of a shadowy anti-religious collective called True Armorik Black Metal (TABM) have been blamed for a series of attacks on Christian sites in Brittany, northwest France. The attacks mirror church burnings that have taken place in Scandinavian countries by obscure black metal sects - and, most notoriously, by Norway's infamous Varg Vikernes (aka Count Grishnackh of the one-man band Burzum).

TABM said it committed the acts not as part of a satanic ritual but as a way to protest against “the excessive power of Christianity and the abolition of pagan worship”.

Three suspects were taken into custody and were placed under arrest. They claimed to have desecrated eight Christian sites since the beginning of May. Their most recent act was to burn down the 16th century Chapel Of The Cross at Loqueffret near the remote tip of Brittany 10 days ago. You can see the results of their alleged actions here.

In a letter sent to local newspaper the Telegramme, the TABM said: “We are going to strike again, again and again.”
