In a bit of irony, Greg Oden is headed to Portland on Wednesday night. Really. Oden is going to Portland for a pre-arranged meeting with Nike.

"It's kind of strange how it worked out," Oden said of his first trip to the city he will likely be calling home in the near future.

  • Oden was thinking Memphis and Boston just like the rest of the country. However, when he turned on his phone after leaving from Indianapolis on Tuesday night and landing in Dallas on a connecting flight, he was as shocked as anyone to hear Portland landed the top pick despite having just a 5.3 percent chance of winning the lottery.

"I hadn't even thought about it," Oden said. "I was surprised."

"I was like, 'Wow. I wasn't even thinking that way.'"

Oden, who will likely be taken first overall in the June 28 NBA Draft by the Trail Blazers, was able to recite most of the starting lineup.

"I watched them play and I know Zach Randolph is the leader of the team right now," Oden said. "I know they have (LaMarcus) Aldridge and that Brandon Roy was the Rookie of the Year. I know they are in the Northwest and it rains a lot."

While it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that Oden will be looking for a place to live in Portland soon, he's still not 100 percent certain.

"It's not definite I'm going to get picked by them," Oden said. "I'm hoping they're interested, but it's not written in stone yet."

Oden grabbed something quick to eat and was approached by numerous people in the airport before he caught a flight to Las Vegas, where there will be an announcement by USA Basketball, and then he will leave for Portland on Wednesday night.

"I won't even be there for 24 hours," Oden said of his brief stay in Las Vegas. "I'd like to stay longer. I've enjoyed myself when I've been there before. I won't even be there long enough to see a magic show. I love seeing magic shows."
