Shorewood woman blessed by saintly friar

Mary Cherubini, a member of Three Holy Women Parish, Millwaukee, was blessed by Fr. Solanus Casey some 60 years ago. She believes the blessing is one reason she's able to see in spite of a genetic eye ailment that threatened her vision. (Catholic Herald photo by James Pearson).

Mary Cherubini believes that the blessing she received from Capuchin Friar Solanus Casey almost 60 years ago is the reason she still has her sight today.
As a teen, Cherubini began having trouble with her vision, even to the point that she feared losing it. At the urging of a neighbor, she went to visit Fr. Casey at St. Bonaventure Friary in Detroit. She waited in line to be blessed by Fr. Casey, whose reputation for prophecy and healing was growing. While she can't recall much about the actual experience, she does credit the blessing for saving her sight.
Pope John Paul II declared the Wisconsin-born priest venerable in 1995. This is the first step on the road to sainthood and Fr. Casey is the first American born male to be declared venerable. Archbishop Dolan will celebrate Mass Saturday, July 28, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Milwaukee, where Fr. Casey was ordained 83 years ago.
