Virtua Fighter 5 for Xbox 360 ships October 30

Online-enabled edition of Sega's arcade brawler set to be on shelves by Halloween.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Jul 24, 2007 5:27 pm PT

Fighting fans have been waiting years for online play to be added to the Virtua Fighter series. Now they finally know exactly when that waits ends, as Sega today confirmed for GameSpot that the Xbox 360 edition of Virtua Fighter 5 will ship Tuesday, October 30.

Originally released earlier this year on the PlayStation 3, Virtua Fighter 5 featured 17 fighters--two of them new to the series--as well as the ability to customize characters with new items purchased with in-game prize money. The big change for the Xbox 360 version of the game will be online play. Other additions include leaderboards and the ability to download matches from the top contenders so as to study their fighting styles. Players will also be able to purchase downloadable Virtua Fighter 5 content through the Xbox Live Marketplace.

As far as changes that affect the offline experience, the Xbox 360 edition will have vibration support for the Xbox 360 controller. It will also be based on the latest arcade hardware revision, and players will be able to go through a quest mode featuring more rivals than before. There will also be new training options in the dojo mode.

For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

OMG, What was that crap about VF not feeling like VF online? Then they go and pull this crap out of the air. I think this just killed sega's credibility more than the next crappy sonic game ever could...

Not only that, the game on the ps3 was insuperior to begin with on release day. This is really making me wonder if sega is putting any effort into the 360 version and this supposed online mode is just so they can say they have it.

>.> Akira players Beware, your knee no longer exist...

"i haven't got a ps3 iv got a 360 and yes there's lag but i think it's coz its a world network ps3 is not so till it go's world wide u cant comment on ps3's lag bring on vf5 online lolso fare theres just no lag theglimerman"

PS3 is world wide and there still no lag and the reason why VF 5 didn't have online was because it was a arcade port. And Sega and AM2 borth said they might not wont but just might do a patch for the PS3 to go online.

Gamespot's is so fing biasis they suck like crazy why the hell is this in Playstation news. O and just because XBOX360 getting this game Live and the PS3 didn't doesn't mean the PS3 sucks. You don't see me saying that the XBOX360 sucks i have that console and the wii and there all good consoles so stop putting the PS3 down. You forget that the PS3 has sold the Most consoles in Japen. I Think Sega is trying to get as much money as they can so they can bring out a new console. One last thing when the 360 live lags it lags and since i've had my PS3 and played online i haven't seen any Lag i bet any money Sega will do a Patch for the PS3 so you can play online on the PS3. Just like Namco Bandi is doing for Tekken 5 DR.

Guile_charlie, you mean just Tekken. Gamespot just had a news story (A small one, biased gamespot) about how a exec at Konami said if PS3 sales don't pick up they might be forced to port MSG4 to other consoles. PS3 is losing all exclusives.

If Virtua Fighter 5 sells well on the 360 (I think it will sell exeedingly well), then I think Sega will start to consider the 360 for first-pickings in the future.

I reckon that Sega thought "I know, lets put our big franchise on the ps3, its the only fighting game on the platform, and because its playstation - it will sell well!".

But, probably due to sales, they have decided on the 360 version - and to add credibility, they stick on the online to match up with the 360's other games which have full online play.

I reckon sega will have more success on the 360 than the ps3. With xbox live, you can almost be certain that the online play will be good.

It is a shame that ps3 owners got the shaft with the online play and stuff. So much for that $600 dream machine with endless possibilities!

It is dissapointing, also, that developers treat two platforms differently. Because now virtua fighter will probably be loved by 360 owners, but loathed by ps3 owners (who are waiting for tekken, which will probably have online).

Also, I heard that there are going to be more customization options, too! Man, there really is no reason to get a PS3 at all, unless you really really need MGS 4 and Tekken 6!

Good question, the Sony develop award article is in X360 news too. I used to suspect it but I think it's pritty obvious what Gamespot's bias is. They just like to cause a little shenanigens between the hardcore console activists, I guess.

I bet SEGA is holding thier breath this fall to see how things go especially with this port.

Although I'm pretty sure that Sega was aware that the PS3 version wasn't going to sell I believe that SEGA is putting more effort into this version since VF has never been done on 360 on Xbox, but like most of thier holiday lineup you can only wish them luck. They haven't been cutting it as a 3rd party publisher which is why I believe this year 2007-08 may be thier last as a 3rd party publisher before they possibly decide to put out another console.

Umm... People - (mainly Sonovius)

I'm not about to judge with network is laggier than the other - but i highly doubt live is going to be lag free on virtua fighter 5. i'm especially not buying this game on my ps3 because i want the 360 version, but has anyone here tried DOA 4 online? Yeah - when it works, it's great... but when it doesn't, it's near unplayable... Thus, a "lag-free" fight game, this or otherwise - i'll believe when i see. Get excited for a sweet game, but don't get your hopes up too high, kids.

Sonovius- have you ever played on the ps network? I've experienced more lag on live than I have on sony's network. You should play both sides before making oafish comments. I could swear they are making a patch for vf5 so you can play on line with the ps3.

My friend owns this on PS3 and as enjoyable as it is now, I'm actually happy to hear about the updates for the 360 version (I own a 360, no PS3 yet) The online offering makes little difference to me (disinterested and skeptical about playing this game online) but the promise of better training options is what catches me. VF4 had such a good dojo program it made the VF5 one look like a hack job. Updated graphics: nice, but not a deal maker. Improved gameplay: I'll be the judge of that.

it seems like a technical issue cos it's been messing up for me too.

I'm not really too interested in the Virtua fighter series, the characters move oddly in my opinion. It looks like they have been speeded up but they move unrealistically from what I saw, the game is still slower than DOA 4 too (my favourite fighting game). I wish they'd make more interesting characters mostly though, they all just do nothing pretty much.

heh I was reading some of the ps3 fangirl posts and its funny how they say it wont be possible to play this game well with lag. You've being dealing with an inferior online product of course you have bad lag. Live generally allocates enough server space to deal with this issue...so it's not an issue. its what our $4.17 affords us: better online play.

@willz288: First of all it's not fanboyism to state a superior version of a game is better. It's like saying a 2 jobs of the same field, one with benefits and the other without is too hard to say which is better....it's quite obvious which would be better. I played VF4 evo for over 50 hours and enjoyed it quite alot, I found it to be worse than DOA 4 in my opinion however. @blueoystercult: If you own both and recognise one is superior then there is no need to downplay the superior title.

And the truth is that the creators of VF5 know more than both of you about the relevance and capability of online features for the games so you should trust them and not just pretend it's too quick and needs split second timing. If they deem it online worthy then they are, as the creators, better suited to make that judgement.
