George Mitchell, the former U.S. senator who is investigating allegations of steroid use in major league baseball, has prostate cancer.
Mitchell, 73, said in a statement on Friday his treatment wouldn't hinder the probe.
"The investigation, which is in its final phases, will be completed in the coming months and neither the substance nor the timing of the report will be affected in any way," he said.
Dr. Harvey Klein, Mitchell's physician, said the prognosis was good, characterizing the cancer as "localized."
Major League Baseball hired Mitchell, a former majority leader in the U.S. Senate, in March 2006 to investigate possible steroid use in the game.
Mitchell met with baseball commissioner Bud Selig on Tuesday, the same day San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's all-time home run record.
Bonds has been dogged by allegations that he used performance-enhancing drugs, documented in the book Game of Shadows. Bonds has denied the claims
Mitchell served in the Senate from 1980 to 1995 and later helped broker peace in Northern Ireland.
