Issues: The Federal Budget

In early February, the Administration will release its proposed budget to Congress. When we look past the budget gimmicks and the rhetoric, the essence of the budget will speak to drastic cuts in a wide range of programs critical to the economic survival of millions of Americans necessitated by enormous tax cuts for corporations and wealthy investors.

The rationale for cuts to essential discretionary programs is pretty well summed up in this quote:

"This cannot afford to be a guns-and-butter term," says Sen. Judd Gregg, the New Hampshire Republican who will be the Senate Budget Committee's new chairman. "You've got to cut the butter."
