Resources: Community Organizing

Building Power from Within Communities

Community organizing is about building power among a broad membership base -- either individual or institutional -- of low and very-low income people.

The members provide the leadership, direction and “troops for the organization's activities. The groups work on issues chosen by the members themselves.

The groups CCC works with focus on subjects which affect a broad swath of very low to moderate income people, such as affordable housing, transportation, supports for low-income parents, rights for immigrants, income support and economic justice.

The Center for Community Change believes that real change happens when people take responsibility for and take control of the institutions that affect their lives.

Having a voice.

Community Organizing is about building that voice in a systematic, deliberate way. Center for Community Change helps advance organizing in three ways:

  • TA and training to groups -- sharing the experience and knowledge of our staff through on-site meetings, trainings and on-going consultations
  • Support for intermediary organizations (groups or networks that support the grassroots groups on the ground, i.e., National Organizers Alliance, Gamiliel Foundation, etc.)
  • Issue / Public Policy work - local groups can be strengthened, energized and developed by getting involved in state-wide or national policy issues and campaigns. CCC connects groups to larger policy efforts when there is a desire to be part of a larger movement such as the National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support.
