In addition to our standard program themes and strands, this year we are emphasizing presentations that address the following special topics:

Student Voices
The millennial generation is unlike any before it. These students were born digital, using technology at very young ages in sophisticated ways that amaze older generations. Hearing what these students have to say is key to understanding their needs and goals and preparing all of us for what lies ahead.

Applicable presentations might:
  • relate future visions to characteristics of millennials
  • provide strategies designed to address student feedback about their preferred learning environments
  • demonstrate ways schools are listening and responding to student input into curriculum design and assessment strategies
  • address development of student leaders
  • give examples of student collaboration
  • include students as part of the presentation team either in person or via videoconference

Ubiquitous Internet Access—A Focus on the Last Mile
The federal E-Rate initiative and other state and national policies have brought the Internet to almost all public schools in the U.S. and the majority of classrooms. However, most students still have only limited access to the Internet in schools.

Applicable presentations might address:
  • promising emerging technologies, strategies, and policies for maximizing current access
  • technology planning to prepare for wider access to the Internet, including technological strategies such as the provision of a computer projector to every Internet-connected classroom or one-to-one computing strategies that place a handheld or portable computer in the hands of every learner
  • leadership strategies that identify successful models and policies established by administrators to facilitate effective use of the Internet in schools

V•NECC—Virtually Extending NECC
NECC actively promotes networking and the building of learning communities through V•NECC presentations that extend presenter/participant interaction beyond the scope of the physical conference through virtual means.

Applicable presentations might include opportunities for pre- and/or continued postconference interactivity through:
  • mailing lists
  • threaded discussions
  • action research projects
  • collaborative projects
  • online courses
