Going for Gold…

The Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on TV is voted for by the general public and is the highest accolade an Australian TV performer can receive.

The award can be won by any TV star who has appeared on an Australian-made TV show. The first official Gold Logie was awarded in 1960 after Graham Kennedy dubbed the awards "the Logies" the previous year. However, the award of "TV Star Of The Year" in 1959 is considered to be equivalent to a Gold Logie.

In 1962, two Gold Logies were presented – one to Tommy Hanlon and one to Lorrae Desmond. In 1967, three Gold Logies were won – two to Graham Kennedy for Male Personality of the Year and Australian Television Personality of the Decade (even though the decade wasn’t quite over!) and one to Hazel Phillips for Female Personality of the Year. In 1970, Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin were awarded special Gold Logies for “providing TV’s greatest moment” in their moon telecast!
