Representative Shuler (D-N.C.) Votes for Taxes, Unions & Big Government Every Chance He Gets
Shuler Votes Wrong on Every Issue that Matters to North Carolinians

Washington, DC- Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) opposes Democrat Heath Shuler’s recent votes and urges the citizens of the 11th District in North Carolina to strongly consider the following:

  • H.R. 800 strips workers of their right to a federally-supervised, private ballot election when deciding on union representation. N.C. is a “right-to-work” state, yet Shuler wants to have the votes public so union bosses can threaten non-members.
  • H.R. 980 allows the unionization of emergency first responders. Airline unions went on strike because of wages and airplanes didn’t fly on time for a few days. Rep. Shuler is passing legislation that will allow emergency first responders to have the same luxury.
  • H.R. 6, the so-called “CLEAN Energy Act of 2007”, is the first tax increase on the federal level in thirteen years. The Democrat-controlled House, with Rep. Shuler’s support, forced a vote in its first fifteen days to raise taxes on domestic energy production, subsequently lowering the value of millions of Americans’ retirement funds.
  • H.R. 2419, the “Farm Bill” was touted by socialist radicals as reform, and Rep. Shuler voted for its passage -   but it is nothing of the sort. It is more of the misguided subsidies that prevent the free marker from existing in agriculture, drives up prices, and rewards the richest corporate farms with tax dollars. It also includes a provision that directly raises taxes, and is a violation of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge signed by 196 Congressman, 42 Senator and a sitting President, but Rep. Shuler refused to sign.

“North Carolinians have a strong work ethic, historic farms and hold precious the right to not be forced into union membership. They are free-market oriented and believe they make their own decision best, not the government,” says ATR President Grover Norquist. “Make no mistake; Representative Heath Shuler of the 11th District will take away those rights on behalf of the common good.”
