A Workgroup is Microsoft's terminology for a Peer to Peer PC Computer Network.

When a Microsoft Operating System joins a Workgroup the other Computers in the same Workgroup may allow it to access their Files, Printers, or Internet Connection. The new member may Share (Microsoft File and Printer Sharing) their Computer's resources with existing members as well. Members of other Workgroups on the same Local Area Network Segment and TCP/IP Network will still not be able to access resources in any Workgroup but their own. (This provides a minimum level of Security, but should not be relied upon for any but the lowest of Priorities. For reliable Security you should use a NT or Active Directory Domain that has been properly patched and hardened.)
