No More Sex!

Blog by Sean Gehon, Wednesday, October 03, 2007

It was nearly two years ago when I fell in love for the very first time. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a handsome prince, he didn’t ride me off into the sunset on his snow white steed, and he certainly didn’t lavish me with presents and take me off into the land of happily ever after. No, I did not end up living a fairy tale existence. In fact, he broke up with me. Luckily, it wasn’t him that I had fallen in love with. In fact, I’d fallen in love with four women, their story, their sex, their cocktails, and more importantly, their Manolo Blahnik stiletto heels.

In 2004, Sex and the City came to an end as Carrie Bradshaw strutted down the streets of New York answering a call from her on-again love interest, Mr. Big, informing her that he was selling his house and returning the Manhattan to continue their turbulent romance. When I began watching Sex and the City, I began my journey on DVD, and knew that after six seasons, my journey with these four fabulous women and their city would come to an end. That being said, when I reached the end of the series and it was all over, my heart was slightly broken. Sure, Carrie and Big were together again, Samantha had found love, Charlotte was getting her baby, and Miranda was getting her best friend back, so I should have been happy, but I wasn’t. It made me sad to think that these four fabulous fictional friends would never have a new story to tell. As it turns out, Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York, and Miranda Hobbes are back together again for one last adventure, one more conversation about sex, and one more journey through the streets of Manhattan for Sex and the City: The Movie!

Nothing excites me more than the thought of watching Sex and the City: The Movie. Unfortunately, that excitement is starting to cause me frustration. As I peruse the gossip sites on the internet I find myself bombarded with pictures, quotes, behind the scenes information on all sorts of spoilers for the upcoming movie. Why would you ruin this cinematic experience for me? I want nothing more than to sit through the movie being fabulous, over the top, perhaps mildly drunk on a cosmopolitan or five, and enjoying this movie first hand and without spoilers. Maybe I’m the only one who wants to enjoy the anticipation and take part in the movie magic that is sure to come, but I still think that I should be allowed to peruse the internet without having a movie ruined for me.

I understand that gossip sites make their money and build their popularity on getting the scoop and spreading behind the scenes information and top secret scandals around the internet. However, I believe that certain things like movies shouldn’t be spoiled for those of us who simply want to enjoy the experience first hand. It’s not a lot to ask that something I’ve waited so long to see be something that I go in with open eyes, anticipation, and some general excitement. Ruining this movie is almost like knowing what you’re getting for Christmas before you actually get it. It’s no fun and generally just disappointing.

So far of all the photos I’ve seen, I have had two major developments ruined for me in the course of the movie. Don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil them for anyone else or I’d become some sort of spoil sport / hypocrite. They say that ignorance is bliss, and perhaps they’re right. In an effort to remain ignorant and in denial I’m going to do my best to pretend I haven’t seen any thing from the upcoming Sex and the City movie. Maybe it won’t work, and maybe I’ll even be a little let down because of the spoilers, but one thing is for sure… I’ll raise my Cosmopolitan and say, “Welcome back, ladies.”
