In today’s world, almost every video game that is released has some form of violence. This isn’t just happening now, though; it’s been a trend for a very long time. Ever since Mario, which had the player killing enemies by jumping on them, video games have become more and more violent. As video game consoles became more and more powerful, games also became increasingly violent due to realism. The list of violent video games goes on and on, but this is my list of the best and most violent video games around today!

5.) Hitman: Blood Money

Hitman: Blood MoneyI looked out a window, witnessing the gathering New Orleans crowd during Mardi Gras. Scanning the crowded street in front of me, I sighted one of my targets. I slid my sniper rifle from my back, and focused the crosshairs on the target. One pull of the trigger and a single bullet passed through the barrel and silencer; with a nearly silent popping sound, another life was ended. My objective was complete, but I still had three more targets remaining.

Hitman: Blood Money tells the story of an assassin named Agent 47 who travels around the globe, completing various missions assigned to him from his top secret employer, the Agency. When the Agency seems to have been infiltrated by a mole, assassins within the agency begin either disappearing or dying, and Agent 47 is going to find out why. In the fourth installment of the very popular Hitman series, Agent 47 finds himself in interesting locations, including a fictional hotel in Las Vegas, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, a seemingly normal suburban neighborhood, and a swamp in Mississippi.

Blood Money is a game that completely revolves around violence, and such is one of the most violent games of all time. Playing as Agent 47 you can kill people in any number of ways, including a wire to strangle people, a firearm (pistols, sniper rifles, machine guns), or unconventional methods like pushing a person over the ledge of a balcony. The game doesn’t contain too much blood, but you are killing people, and you deal with the dead bodies afterwards. The most disturbing part of playing Hitman: Blood Money is that you know you’re killing other human beings who have lives, backgrounds, and sometimes even families.

Hitman: Blood Money is easily the best game of the Hitman franchise, and has shown that through its popularity. While the game picked up an ESRB rating of Mature (appropriate for people age 17+), the lack of blood in the game significantly lowers the gross factor in this game. The number of ways you can assassinate your targets is astounding; you can assassinate a given target in any possible way you can think of. The realistic graphics and the freedom you get in completing your tasks ensures this is one of the best games you’ll ever play, despite the violence.

4.) Manhunt

ManhuntGlancing down the hallway, I notice a psychotic gang member at the end of the hall. Holding a plastic bag in my hands, I silently sneak up on the man. I quickly slip the plastic bag over his head and hold it tightly over his face. The man struggles for several moments before suddenly falling to the ground, limp and lifeless.

In Manhunt, you play the role of James Earl Cash, who has been convicted of a grisly crime and sentenced to death by injection. On the eve of his execution, an ex-Hollywood director named Starkweather bribes the police and prison officials to keep Cash alive. Instead of being lethally injected, James Earl Cash receives a powerful sedative. Following the faked execution, Cash is relocated to a strange city called Carson City. Carson City is secretly being run by Starkweather. In Carson City, Cash is hunted by various gangs attempting to kill him. You later discover that the violence that takes place in the city is filmed by Starkweather for a disgusting kind of reality television show. In the final scene in which Cash is supposed to die, Cash escapes, and begins a journey to find out who is doing this to him, leaving a bloody trail in the process.

Manhunt leads players through a bloody and gruesome slaughter performed by James Earl Cash. The game allows the player to kill enemies (Carson City gang members) using various different weapons, including plastic bags, knives, chainsaws, shotguns, Uzis, and crowbars. When killing an enemy, the player will encounter extremely disturbing visuals and audio. For example, when you kill an enemy with a hatchet, you will see gallons of blood, as well as hear the screams and groans of the dying victim.

Manhunt, despite its violent and creepy setbacks, is very entertaining. The story is interesting, and the game does a very good job at scaring the player. The game plays out many parodies to today's media obsessions, including reality TV, news, and intense violence in movies. Manhunt is still great because of its fast paced gameplay, its good story, and its ability to scare the living daylights out of anybody who plays it.

3.) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasAs I ran down the street, I realized I was cornered. I was exhausted, and I knew I couldn't run much longer from the police. In a last ditch effort to escape, I sprinted into the street, stopped and yanked a man out of his car, and hopped in. Tires squealed as I raced my new vehicle down the street. Almost immediately, several cop cars skidded around the corner, hot in pursuit.

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, you play the role of Carl Johnson (a.k.a. CJ). CJ is a former gang member that returns to his home town of Los Santos (a fictional city based on Los Angeles) after learning that his mother has been murdered. Throughout the game, you control CJ's quest to unravel the mystery of his mother's murder, and help his gang become as notorious as it was before he left. In order to bring CJ's gang to glory, you must commit various crimes, including assault, theft, extortion, and murder.

The violence in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas usually involves hand-to-hand combat or firearms (pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles, bazookas, etc.). Both types of violence are bloody and usually end with the victim dying. A player also has the ability of using a vehicle as a weapon by speeding down streets and running over pedestrians. However, there are consequences for the player's actions. When the police witness a crime being committed, officers actually chase and attempt to arrest the player!

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an amazing game because it has open ended gameplay. A player has the ability to complete their objectives in any number of ways. Even though the game is violent and bloody, it attempts to teach a valuable lesson: you can't get away with everything! This is evidenced by the severe punishment the player receives from the police force after committing a crime. In the end, this violent game has many more good things about it than bad, and dominates other violent games due to its powerful storyline and open ended gameplay.
