SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAS BEEN SEXUALLY ABUSED
You may think you don't know anyone who has been sexually abused, especially if most of your friends and acquaintances are Christians. But the statistics indicate otherwise: sexual abuse knows no religious or social boundaries. A recent study indicated that 38% of the women interviewed had been sexually abused by an adult or family member by the age of 18.

The Wounded Heart is an intensely personal and specific look at this most "soul deadening" form of abuse. It's personal because it may be affecting you, your spouse, a close friend or neighbor, or someone you know well at church, and it's specific because it goes well beyond the general issues and solutions discussed in other books.

Dr. Allender's book reaches deep into the wounded heart of someone you know, exploring the secret lament of the soul damaged by sexual abuse—and laying hold of the hope buried there by the One whose unstained image we all bear.

Clarify
The book I spoke of in the post below is NOT "The Wounded HEart"....Please be clear on that. The Wounded Heart is an awesome book that has helped me in countless ways. I've read it once, early in my therapeutic journey, and now am in a support group that is reading and working through the workbook. It's hard, yes, but anything worth doing is usually hard. I completely encourage anyone who's been abused in this way to pick it up and work through it slowly.

To "Cautious"
I'm sad to hear that there is a book out there that is causing you to be discouraged about therapy. God uses people since the beginning of time and therapy is no exception. True, only God can heal us but sometimes He "chooses" to use earthly angels. I've been in therapy for 6 years dealing w/ mpd/did, borderline and depression and have been healed in SO many areas because of the safety, love, acceptance, guidance and trust I have with my T. The Holy SPirit has been there with us, every single time, comforting and dwelling inside me. Please don't let an anti-therapeutic book discourage you from pursuing a gift from our God in the form of a great therapist.

Wonderful Book
This book is full of compassionate help for abuse victims. It can be read & re-read, either skimming or every word. It is just packed full of so much helpful information. I bought it even though I was a little unsure, since it looked to be very religious. However, no matter what a person's religion is, I think this book would help. It drew attention to deeper, more ingrained issues than other books on the same topic.

Hard, but GOOD
I read the wounded heart b/c of the recommendation of a nav leader. It was the hardest book emotionally to get through that I have ever read;it took me four months to finish. This is not a discouragement, however. Because the author brings out deep sin issues as a result of calloused wounds in our hearts, it is a very emotional book that is hard to get through, but a beginning to a journey towards healing, becoming real, and becoming more intimate with God. I am re-reading this book while going through the workbook and doing counseling. Working through sexual abuse is not an easy thing to do. It is a long hard process, but a santifiying one. I recommend this book to everyone that I know who has been sexually abused.

Very Helpful
I found this book to be a valuable guide through very difficult and confusing times. As the parents of a child who was abused by a friend, we have wandered through very emotionally turbulent times. This book has enabled us to understand the phases of the healing process and to be able to ask questions to help our son. We were able to see responses and actions and then ask questions to get to the deeper issues that resulted from the abuse. I highly recommend the book.

All Power and Glory to Jesus
I found Hope, Understanding and for the first time I see why I have been living as though I have no power especially as being a believer in Jesus Christ. I am on a new journey to learning how to live. It is extending the hope and healing also in my family. Thank you. Lord Bless you.

More Please
I am seeking more info on how to teach the "Wounded Heart"book. Some women at my church have expressed a desire to know more. "what am I suppose to get from this chapter" kind of thing. The first time I took this class the person teaching had "teachers notes" and the notes painted a picture and gave me a sense of freedom I had never experienced. I just wondered where he'd gotten them. I feel like I gained something from reading this book,at least learning that someone else knows exactly how I feel and that I really am not the only one. I would just like to extend what I've learned to oher struggling women. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The Wounded Heart
Defines the problems and feelings and secondary reactions/behaviour. Does not define steps to recovery, or mentions them too briefly. Author knows what he means, but we, the laity, do not! Repeated tells the reader he does not have enough space to go into that! I am sooo frustrated by books that are advertised to hold the answers everyone has been missing, only to have the problems so well described, and be left with no clear steps to answers!

Be Cautious
I've been engaging in the psychotherapy process as a patient for 3 years now, and found no releif . In fact I have more doubts and confusion than I ever have. I was given a book by a Christian friend entitled "Only God Can Heal the Wounded Heart" which I am reading at the present time. I am only 50 pages into the book and am already wondering if I have made a BIG mistake in receiving psychotherapy. I really like my counselor but I am none-the-less considering quitting the process. The book has been almost prophetic in its spelling out what the process involves and what it produces in the life of the patient. Read the book and make an informed decision before submitting yourself to any psychotherapy. I wish I had. Will.

A deep book on a serious subject. While this book may be difficult to read, it is one of my very best resources for healing form sexual abuse. Take the time to read it. Read as much as you can of it at a time. Consider buying and using the workbook. But get counseling too.

This a subject most people don't feel comfortable discussing over dinner. The Wounded Heart goes beyond our comfort zone, and that's what I like about it. It shakes our sense of complacency with our deadness.
