Amien Rais Supports Gus Dur Wholeheartedly With Wiranto's Dismissal

Assembly Speaker Amien Rais said that he supports President Abdurrahman Wahid's policy in relation with the former Minister of Defence and Security General Wiranto. He also said that the Human Rights issue of East Timor had to be solved at once, even though It would mean involvement of the international world.

General Wiranto, who is now Coordinating Minister of Politics and Security, has no alternative but to resign if proven guilty later, said Amien Rais.

"I don't think Wiranto can do anything else but resign, if there is evidence of his guilt," Amien said at a press conference in Tokyo, on Wednesday, according to Kompas reporter in Tokyo, Yusron Ihza, last evening.

When asked what would happen if Wiranto resigned, Amien replied, in line with tradition when a general resigns he will become a regular citizen without any special characteristics.

As to any reaction from the military about Gus Dur's request For Wiranto's resignation, Amien was sure that the matter would Not pose a problem. He believes that Gus Dur would strike a deal with the military after his extended journey overseas.

As to the question, why Gus Dur should bring General Wiranto's question up during his trip, Amien thought that the President found himself in a cornered position. It would have been ideal if he had chosen to bring the issue up back home after his journey. But, it might have been a very pressing moment when he decided to make the announcement abroad.

Amien Rais was invited to Japan by the Japanese economic daily, Nihon Keizai Shinbun on Tuesday and Wednesday. He was also scheduled To meet Premier Keizou Obuchi. He also met several Japanese high ranking officials, o.a. Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa, Foreign Minister Yohei Kono and MITI Minister Takashi Fukaya.

Referring to the results of the respective meetings, Amien Said that the Japanese government is closely watching developments In Indonesia without any signs of interference.

The Japanese government hopes that the Indonesian government Would lift the present tension between the military and the executives in a tactful way.

Juwono - Wiranto

Defence and Security Minister Juwono Sudarsono met General Wiranto Wednesday (2/2) after receiving a call from President KH Abdurrahman Wahid who delegated the instruction for the general's resignation to him. The Kompas source at the office of the Coordi- Nating Minister for Politics and Security refused to explain what had been discussed at the meeting.

Wednesday afternoon, TNI Chief Commander Admiral Widodo AS had a meeting with General Wiranto at TNI Headquarters in Cilang- Kap. Several ministers related to politics and security were also invited, but most of them, like Attorney General Marzuki Darusman, Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono, State Minister for Human Rights Hasballah M. Saad and Justice and Law Minister, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, failed to attend the meeting.

At a different location Cabinet Minister, Marsillam Simanjuntak Refused to reply questions of a confirmative nature about General Wiranto's resignation from his post of Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security.

""There is one answer to this question, no comment," Simanjuntak told reporters after the cabinet meeting about politics and security matters.

The right of a president

TNI spokesman, Marshall Graito Usodo told reporters Tuesday That Wiranto, in his present position, could only be dismissed by the President. "TNI leaves the matter entirely to the president," he said.

He further said, amidst the clamor for General Wiranto's Resignation, TNI assumed a waiting position for the law to take over after results of the HAM Investigation Team were handed over to the Attorney Office.

As to the other high ranking officers, Major General Zacky Anwar Makarim, Major General Adam Damiri (Operational Assistant General Chief of Staff) and Brigadier General Suhartono Suratman (Deputy TNI Spokesman), TNI was not going to define its position before the whole case has become clear.

"We don't want to be too hasty with our comments. These officers have, after all, served the country well," he said. They are still in active duty and are doing their work as usual, he said further.

As to Wiranto's statement that KPP HAM has made up a biased report, the Spokesman answered, TNI appreciates the case's legal processing so far.

"The results will be discussed with the Advocacy Team. They would understand and know how to proceed further."

Rhe Spokesman also believed that the political inclinations of a situation after the handover of the KPP HAM results had best be left To the Attorney General Office.

"It isn't a simple situation. It carries political dimensions. I feel it as a citizen and as a TNI officer. Now, we have to keep Matters at an even keel to prevent more problems. We hope that Those political dimensions are part of a solution," he said.

Parliament Chairman Akbar Tandjung is of the opinion that Wiranto should resign from his present post of Coordinating Minister For Politics and Security to smoothen investigations on East Timor Human Rights offences. If Wiranto resigns, a psychological obstacle would be lifted for the examiners. A smooth investigation of Wiranto, could forestall the case be brought to an International Court.

"His retirement from government is just of a temporary nature. If investigations fail to prove his guilt, he will be reinstalled As Coordinating minister for Politics and Security. We are holding onto the principle of "assumed innocence," Akbar Tandjung stressed. (*)
