BRISBANE-OECUSSE SISTER CITIES

The City of Brisbane entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Enclave of Oecusse on 23 November 2001. The agreement built on years of grass-roots level engagement between the two communities and reinforces the strong bonds of cooperation between the Brisbane City Council, local and international NGOs and the East Timorese community of Brisbane and Oecusse.

Projects undertaken to date include:
Financial support for the development of the Oecusse Tais Weaving initiative. Tais are traditional cloths woven by the women of East Timor. In Oecusse a group of women referred to as 'Women Waiting for Justice' produce Tais to be sold in Brisbane.

Provision of funding for staff to support the development of the Oecusse Safe House, a facility which provides emergency accommodation for victims of domestic violence.

Installation of a trial Slow Sand Filtration System in Oecusse to improve the quality of water and reduce the incidence of water borne diseases.

Industry Partner for 'Governance for Peace: Indigenous and International Peace Building in East Timor.' A three-year research project with the University of Queensland.

Annual celebrations of Oecusse Freedom Day in Brisbane (the day Australian Peace Keepers arrived in Oecusse) on October 22nd.
