Foundation 9 merges Shiny, Collective

Studios behind Silent Hill 5 and The Golden Compass adaptation merged by parent company, awaiting new name.

Calling itself "the largest independent games developer in North America and Europe," Foundation 9 has prided itself on the array of studios at its command since it was formed in March 2005. Despite that, the company's roster of studios is shrinking, as it today announced that its recent acquisition Shiny Entertainment would be merged with Foundation 9 cofounding developer The Collective.

Foundation 9 says the merged studio will be better equipped to make "large-scale games based on big licensed properties." The two merged Newport Beach, California-based studios have already moved to Foundation 9's corporate headquarters in nearby Irvine, California.

The new studio will also be given an as-yet undetermined new name, and will be headed up by Shiny studio manager Michael Persson. No staffers will be laid off in connection with the merger. At the moment, Shiny is finishing up development of The Golden Compass for Sega, while The Collective is working on Silent Hill 5 for Konami, and the horror action adventure Harker.

boo-hoo! shiny hasnt done crap since days of PSone or at least i dont remember anything worth thinking about. As long as the core remains and they can pump out some new ORIGINAL games and not milk money on 74th sequel to a game they might be able to re-establish themselves!

from the ads I've seen the quality and realism they seem to strive for for the Golden Compass could be a very good thing for Silent Hill I think this could be very good

The Collective has been a good studio, as Chirico said, they made the Buffy games (I liked the 1st one alot). Shiny I'm not a fan of after they butchered Enter the Matrix.

The Collective made the decent Buffy games, and that so-so Indiana Jones game that everyone's forgotten.

There has been a media blackout on Harker for a long time now, it was announced like a year ago, if not more.

But yes, based on Jonathan Harker from Dracula yes...

Hrmm...this is an interesting merge. The Collective did relatively good jobs with games like Buffy, Star Wars Episode III, and more recently, Marc Ecko's Getting Up. Meanwhile, Shiny was a god in the old days with Earthworm Jim and Wild 9, but the Matrix games they worked on definitely tore things apart for them.

Both, regardless, are very unique minds in the industry, so it's going to be exciting to see what they have coming out of their studios.
