| Social ministries furthers the vision and mission of Catholic Charities in ways that create greater opportunities for individuals and parish groups to become personally involved in walking with the poor and vulnerable in our local communities.
These ministries of service, support and community-building are uniquely envisioned to broaden the impact and work of Catholic Charities and parish and community organizations. Our approach is to begin by listening to the concerns and issues identified at the local parish and community level, and then to help shape a response that is mutually agreed to and involves those most affected in the ongoing process.
Collaborative ministries have evolved in many different ways. For example, Catholic Charities has assisted a cluster of urban and suburban parishes in setting up a Diversity Council to address issues of racism and intolerance in their changing communities. Social Ministries has also convened parishes who want to partner in sharing their resources, ministries and cultural experiences.
Catholic Charities’ Companion Families works to link low-income and vulnerable families – families that are experiencing the lack of job skills, work opportunities and poverty – with parish companion families, thus offering support and hope to those most affected by poverty and racism. These Companion Families participants have become part of a mutually supporting, loving and faith-filled community of friends.
In all of the social Ministries efforts, participants are invited to consider more meaningful and personal ways of serving others and in joining collaborative community ministries that further social justice and peace.
Catholic Charities services are non-denominational and open to all people regardless of race, religion, age, ability, or nation of origin.
