BallardBallard has been verifiably cool for several years now. A shopping highlight is Ballard Avenue Northwest, a historic red-brick street with boutiques sprouting like dandelions from a freshly cut lawn. Belltown First came the gritty bars and trendy restaurants, then the fancy condos and apartments. Now, Belltown is also one of Seattle's hippest shopping neighborhoods, brimming with cutting-edge boutiques, galleries and salons. Capitol Hill Capitol Hill does a few things to near perfection: niche and alternative books, used and alternative music, vintage and alternative clothing, and funky alternative home décor. See a pattern? Downtown When you're really serious about shopping — we're talking school clothes, the perfect gown — there's only one place to go: downtown, ground zero for Seattle shopping. Fremont It probably should come as no surprise that the Seattle community which fancies itself the Center of the Universe and still wows the rest of us with wild, pagan art celebrations should be a one-of-a-kind place to shop, too. Greenwood / Phinney Ridge It may not be a hotbed of high fashion, but the variety of businesses, services and watering holes makes leaving the neighborhood unnecessary, unless you need a pair of jeans with the latest pocket stitching. Pioneer Square This historic gallery-filled business district has a wonderful ambience and a core of very interesting, independent merchants quietly going about their business, selling unique products you won't find anywhere else. University District University Way Northeast — or "The Ave," as it's known to everyone in Seattle — used to be the center of the University shopping district. Now many locals prefer the slick University Village down the hill, but there' s still reason to stroll the traditional promenade. |
