Naming yourselves after one of Funkadelic's creations carries quite a responsibility. After all, the real Uncle Jam wanted you to funk with him, and in all probability was the kind of 'uncle' that your mum introduced you to when you were about five and her marriage was in trouble. He was through and through filth with nothing in mind but filling a groove full of funk. This Unklejam nearly comes up to such standards, although it's not nearly as dirty as you would hope.
Make no mistake; this is a great floor filling club track. There are plenty of hooks to get stuck into you. You're implored to "shake it girl like it's your birthday' which is handy if you’re a girl, and even better if you're a girl who's shaken 'it' on your birthday, because then you'd at least have a point of reference. All of this is beside the point though, because this is one of those tunes that'd make you shake whether you knew how to or not.
From the high pitched Prince style vocal through to the perfectly punctuated bass line you'd be hard pushed not to love this song. Still, it's nowhere near as down and dirty as our favourite Uncle or Prince; far more filth next time please, then we'll love ya.
