Harrison: No Wii price drop for now

Soon-to-be-ex Nintendo executive says scarce console will bear $249 tag for the "foreseeable future."
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Oct 12, 2007 11:04 am PT

With all three next-generation consoles in play, many are looking to this holiday season as a good indicator of the future of the console race. Looking to get a leg up on the competition, Microsoft and Sony have undergone much-publicized price jiggering and repackaging in recent months to help lure frugal shoppers to their console.

However, that won't be the case for Nintendo's Wii. Speaking to Reuters, Nintendo senior marketing VP George Harrison said that the Wii's price isn't budging, at least for now. "We'll stay at $249 for the foreseeable future. We are still selling everything we can make," he said. Of course, Harrison's "foreseeable future" may be skewed, given that the long-time exec announced last month that he would be parting ways with the Mighty N this December.

The news is unsurprising, considering statements made by Nintendo of America president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime earlier this month. The outspoken exec noted that inventory for the Wii has been and still is selling out within a day of arriving at retail, and said that supply of the console will definitely not meet demand this holiday season.

For anyone that knows supply and demand, if anything Nintendo should be raising the price. If they raise the price at the moment there won't be such a shortage of Wiis anywhere, and we might be able to see more of a steady stock on shelves.

MrSickVisionz: Yo kira ... good point there ... but we as gamer shouldn't support a company to not keep their price down, otherwise it will be extreme fanboyism. But trust me, Nintendo if they want, they can totally drop the price at any point in time, cause, in the first place, a console manufacturer isn't supposed to make any money out the box, but with the Wii they are..... thus, a price drop is a piece of cake ... but hey, as someone said here, since this cake is selling out hotly, why drop the price? (strategically speaking) .

for a console that sells so great it's strange that i know no one who wants one. i think it's mainly children who buy the wii. when i was in a game shop the other day all the children were in the nintendo section looking at DS and wii games whilst the only adults were the parents of these children

"The sales would sky rocket if they dropped the price to it's rightful one 199"

Not really. They sell out now. They are producing at capacity and selling out everytime. A price drop would just make it sellout even faster, but its not like if they drop the price to $199, they'll be able to MAKE more systems.

nobody (i dont think) is complaining about the price, price is obviously not affecting sales and there is clearly no other reason to drop it

@Link256:

How do you come off telling anyone to think before they talk? Yes, Dead Rising was within a year of launch, but none of the rest were! He was almost entirely correct!

And then your list of games: Kameo - terrible and you know it
Perfect Dark Zero - WAY overhyped and you know it Dead or Alive 4 - decent, but nothing to write home about
Burnout Revenge - decent, but nothing to write home about Saints Row - a good game, one point for you F.E.A.R. - another good game, but a PORT of a PC game Call of Duty 2 - a solid game, but nothing amazing
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - a fantastic game...but a PORT

Come on man. Be serious. Of the games you mentioned, the only one that potentially was a system seller (which is the type of game the guy was referring to, clearly) is Oblivion. Maybe. So take a cold shower, dude and think before YOU talk.

Link 256: "Next time, think before you talk. Dead Rising was released within the first 10 months of the Xbox 360's life-cycle.

Also, while the 360 did not have most of those games you mentioned, they did have the likes of Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Dead or Alive 4, Burnout Revenge, Saints Row, F.E.A.R., Call of Duty 2 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, among others, to keep them busy."

Dude I'm sorry but FEAR was ok, and Dead Rising was just alright, and possibly Elder Scrolls (Wouldn't know, don't want to play MMORPG's) was good, but none of those are really killer app's like Zelda, Metroid Prime 3, Wario Ware, the Wii edition or RE4, the Wii edition of Madden, or even Wii Sports. Kameo was every other platforming game with the elements involved ever, Perfect Dark and Call of Duty are just the same old FPS garbage, and Dead or Alive 4 was every other Dead or Alive just shinier, whilst Saints Row was just another Grand Theft Auto rip off (They did it fairly well, don't get me wrong) all these games are the same old stuff. Wii may be reproducing games but they're breathing much more life to the games above and beyond new graphics.
Man, I like playing games like Skate and the new editions of NHL on Xbox and PS3 but other than that there really isn't anything fresh.

You know there's no need for a price drop when you can buy a console and a game with one weeks pay AND still have enough to pay your bills without going out of your way to save in advance. (I did, day of release) God, that felt like a 'you might be a redneck if..' joke

All wii's are selling, evidently no one's waiting for a price drop anyway. Once demand goes down the price will drop - though I expect that to happen around the time that ps3/360 will drop their prices low enough as well.

Nintendo has free wiggle room in price thanks to first year sales. They are being smart and not push a price drop until demand shrinks.

Worth adding it takes longer to make wii games cos a) lack of hardware power means developers need to actually think of a good game instead of some generic fps, and b) xbox has similar architecture to a PC so it basically got a load of [relatively easy] ports in the first year. That aint gonna work so well on the wii Having said that, it is about damn time N got some games out instead of just bragging about sales figures.

(in bad mafia accent) If Galaxy aint a 9.5 reggie got some explainin' to dooo...

Now normally I don't post, but I thought this might be a nice thing to add on: Toysrus Canada today sent out an email about the Wii, effective tomorrow, Saturday October 13th:

The Wii will be dropping in price from 289.99 to 269.99, AND there's a 2nd SKU - all it shows is "Wii Console Version 2" when you look it up in the system (I evidently work there). -- It should also be noted that Walmart has an everyday price of 279.99 up here in Canada.
Might be connected to the dollar *smiles gleefully* - but it was $10 more than the competition because it was a nice profit for the company obviously, but if they're dropping the price a whole $20, then it suggests they're getting a better deal from Nintendo, which does suggest the prices are dropping - At least on the buyer's side of things. On top of that, it looks like they're changing their marketing strategy slightly by changing the packaging, something I didn't expect since Wii Sports seems to be the most favoured game among consumers I've noticed.

Don't know what "Version 2" means, but the shipments are expected to arrive sometime this week, so we'll see. Thought that might be something worth making my first post here =)

Meh... I'm just staying away from consoles this gen other than I occasionally pick up my Bro's 360. I just have fun playing old **** on the PS2, good ol' PC, PSP, DS... I always seem to have a single player game to play to, and thats not counting replays. Wii just seems bleh, holds no interest to me, friggin Game Cube, smashed into a Ipod esque look then gave it a TV controller...

250$ is a decent price for the Wii, although they are pushing it. Just think about how hard it would be to find a Wii if the price was lower though.

Tom Magrino, shame on you! You made a spelling mistake! 2nd paragraph, last 2 lines. Here, allow me to correct it for you...

"...given that the long-time exec announced last month that he would be parting ways with the Mario Factory this December."

Sniping sarcasm aside, I believe this is one of the first news articles exlusively concerning the Wii in a good long while that hasn't used that description. Such crass generalisations, while "light-hearted" shouldn't be used in official news articles. Even if Nintendo wanted to change their image, how would they do so when there's supposedly unbiased journalism not-so-subconciously suggesting the opposite. It feeds troll-ish fanboys and provokes needless argument.

Ranting aside, the only issue I have with the current price is that there's still precious few games really worth investing my money in. I'm of the opinion that paying more for a console if it has a lot to offer is a better option than paying less for something with such vast software limitations, which currently, the Wii is suffering from.

I hate to sound like I'm bitter of my purchase or of Nintendos current success, but the Wii will continue to feel like something of a (dare i say) "gimmick" in my eyes until there are at least a handful games that really, truly do the controls justice. I would dearly love to eat my own words, I'm just getting a little bored of waiting to do it.

The Wii is too overpriced for what you get. I mean sure its a package of decent processing power into a VERY small box that consumes VERY little power (big plus for me cus electricity is very expensive where I live) but the 360 is like a hundred dollars more, 50 if you want the core And the 360 is atleast 9 times stronger than the wii.

It would have been nice if they sell the Wii console without Wii Sports for 199 dollars. Or even, instead of that sports game, they can add Wii Play to their console for 249. It would still be a great deal that I would recommend to everyone, including first time gamers.

I have, and love my Wii system, but they really (I mean REALLY) need to start making real games for this machine. It has some brilliant capabilities, but for those of us who consider mini games the last refuge of the untalented developer there are at best two or three games per YEAR worth buying. I loved Metriod Prime Corruption, but I had to take time out from Bioshock, Halo 3, and Orange box(all released in less than two months) to play it. If MS can put out that quality on a new machine that developers love to complain about the cost of making games for then where are the great games for the system they know inside out and backwards? 3/4 of the stuff released for wii I would be embarrassed to use as a coaster for fear of what it might do to the drink I set on it. I find the extras ("channels") included with the Wii to be great. Why, you can even watch some of the video from the net on your TV!(sarcasm. Why only flash 7 in the browser?). I am very happy with my wii( can you imagine what I`d write if I weren`t?) but I am tired of wondering where the games are. "We were caught off guard by it`s success" can only go so far. Did developers think literally NOONE was going to buy one? They supported the Dreamcast better than this, and the Neo Geo Pocket Color had a more robust release schedule of full length games than the wii so far. I guess I`ll have to be content checking up on my photos(yep, they`re still there) and playing the GC games I never bought before until they realize that hardcore gamers are interested in innovation too, and we tend to buy more games than people who have to have all kinds of safety devices so they don`t hurt themselves (next , the Wii Helmet and body suit, included with every wii mote.....) If they don`t start addressing this issue it won`t matter what the system costs. It`s almost like an iphone without a dial tone at this point.
