The respect for human rights remains at the heart of the search for peace and justice on the African continent, the concept of human security which demands among others the safeguarding of peoples’ vital freedoms are ultimately connected to peoples basic human rights. Lasting stability on the African continent would be difficult to achieve unless people are protected from threats to their rights, safety or lives.

Countries which are well governed and respect the human rights of their citizens are better placed to avoid the horrors of conflict and to overcome obstacles to development. Accordingly we will not enjoy development without security, we will not enjoy security without development and we will not enjoy either without the respect for human rights.” - Report of the Secretary-General, In larger freedom: towards development, security and human rights for all, 59th session of the UN General Assembly, p 6, New York, NY.

Accordingly the ISS, as a leading research institute in the field of human security, is committed to the promotion of human rights across the African continent. Through various partnerships with governments and civil society organisations and policy-oriented research, the Institute plays a valuable role in the promotion of human rights and human security.
