Two married couples competed. In the first round, the two couples were shown a fictional headline regarding a historic event, with all but a few letters missing. If a couple could buzz in and solve the headline, they earned $500; otherwise, a clue to the event was provided and several letters were filled into the puzzle, deducting $100 from the value of the headline in the process. If a couple gave an incorrect answer, they were locked out from the rest of the puzzle. The couple that solved the headline were then entitled to answer two follow-up questions, worth $100 each. A total of three headlines were played in this round.

In the second round, puzzles alternated between interviews and magazine covers. During interview segments, couples attempted to identify the person speaking, using only the person's voice and heavily-pixelated face as initial clues for $500. As time passed, the pixelation diminished, and the value of the answer went down $100 each time the face became clearer. For the magazine covers, the players would be shown a real magazine cover, with one person's likeness removed. Again, a couple could win $500 if they could identify the person without any additional help, but $100 was subtracted from the puzzle's value for each clue that was given to the teams. Two interviews and two magazine covers were played in this round.

In the third round, three more headlines were played, with each headline starting at $1000 and going down by $200 for each clue. The third headline had only one follow-up question, which couples wagered all or part of their score to answer. Only the highest wager earned the right to answer the question. The couple with the most money at the end of the round won the game, got to keep their money, and advanced to the bonus round.

End Game

The bonus round consisted of one final headline. If the couple managed to solve it at the outset, they won $5000. If not, they would receive extra letters and a clue to the headline, which reduced the value by $1000 until it was solved. If a couple tried to guess the headline and was wrong, the round ended and the couple won no additional money.
