Favorite Books

I have approximatel y 5000 books and I am constantly buying more. I also give away books all the time, to make room for the other books I can't resist bringing home. I am truly a hopeless case. I have catalogued about 600 of the books in my personal collection over at LibraryThing .com. I could probably list most of that books right here if I had the time and the space, but I'd bring down the Amazon.com server, I'm sure. So I'll list a few for now and swap my choices one day soon.

  3. Raising Arizona DVD ~ Nicolas Cage

Your baby, toddler, or preschooler's fascination with the storybook character  Franklin the Turtle might lead you to believe that a turtle would be the ideal pet for your child. But before you head out to your local pet store to scoop up your very own Franklin, you might want to head this advice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine: turtles and other reptiles should not be purchased as pets for children under the age of five.

Here's why. Turtles carry Salmonella bacteria on their outer skin and shell. If the person who is handling a turtle isn't meticulous about his or her hygiene, it is possible for that person to spread the Salmonella bacteria to other family members. A pet turtle will also contaminate all surfaces that it comes into contact with, and the turtles water dish or aquarium can, in turn, infect other household surfaces (e.g., the kitchen sink, the bathtub).

Anyone exposed to Salmonella bacteria is at risk of develop an illness called Salmonella, which is characterized by diarrhea (which can bloody), fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. Earlier this year, a four-week-old baby in the U.S. died as a result of Salmonella bacteria spread from the family's pet turtle.

If you are expecting a baby and you have a pet turtle at home, you should put your pet turtle up for adoption before your baby arrives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "A family expecting a child should remove any pet reptile or amphibian from the home before the infant arrives." The CDC also stresses that childcare centers should avoid keeping reptiles or amphibians as pets. (See "STANDARD 3.043: Prohibited Pets")

Green Halloween: Think Eco-Friendly Family Fun

4:58 PM PDT, October 21, 2007, updated at 5:15 PM PDT, October 21, 2007
Halloween can be downright scary — particularly when you stop to consider the amount of waste that gets generated for the sake of a couple of hours of fun.

But the holiday doesn't have to be all about generating a frightening amount of trash -- not if you and your kids plan ahead and come up with creative ways to celebrate a fun and eco-friendly green Halloween.

Becoming a mother is a life-changing event. Sure, it's a time of tremendous joy, but it can also be time when issues that you thought you'd dealt with years ago can suddenly boomerang back into your life again, whether you're ready or not.

Unresolved trauma is one of those issues. According to researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Texas-Austin, mothers who are struggling with unresolved traumas are more likely to have difficulty adjusting to motherhood than other new moms.

The researchers -- who  published their findings in the journal Development and Psychopathology last year -- found that mothers who had experienced an unresolved trauma were more likely
  • to be frightened of their infants and
  • to exhibit behaviors that were frightening to their infants (for example, sudden voice changes or movements).
This pattern of behavior -- which the researchers described as "frightened/frightening"  behaviors -- has previously been linked to attachment problems in children (difficulty forming friendships, increased aggression, and anxiety or depression).

According to the researchers, in situations where one or both parents have a history of unresolved trauma, therapy combined with parenting classes may help to ease the transition to parenthood and help the new parents to feel more at peace with the events of the past. It’s not the traumatic events themselves that have an effect, but how those events have been integrated into the parents' lives.

In other words, you may not be able to rewrite the past, but you can certainly change your life moving forward.
~ ~ ~

In a perfect world, we would all emerge from a picture-perfect childhood, find the ideal Ozzie and Harriet relationship (okay, maybe not that), experience complication-free pregnancies and textbook births, and welcome healthy babies who are as perfect to the rest of the world as they are to us. Those children would thrive in the world, never losing their way or stumbling for even a moment. Life would be more Walton-like than the sappiest-ever episode of The Waltons (if you could handle that).

But life doesn't always follow our hopes, dreams, or carefully put together birth plans and life blueprints. I try to speak to a variety of experiences in my books because there is nothing worse than feeling like a pregnancy or parenting "misfit" everywhere you turn. I've made my way across a lot of challenging pregnancy and parenting terrain, as many of you know, which is why I bring this perspective to everything I write. It's not just what I know. It's who I am.

All the best to you and your family (or family-to-be), regardless of where you are on your journey.
