Image:lavra_ivanov.jpg '''Alexander Nevsky Monastery''' was founded by Peter the Great in 1710 at the southern end of the Nevsky_Prospekt in St_Petersburg to house the Relics of Alexander_Nevsky, Patron_saint of the newly-founded Russian capital. In 1797, it was raised to the rank of Lavra, previously bestowed only upon Kiev_Monastery_of_the_Caves and the Trinity Monastery of St Sergius. The monastery premises contain two Baroque churches, designed by father and son Trezzini and built in 1717-22 and 1742-50, respectively; a majestic Neoclassical cathedral, built in 1778-90 to a design by Ivan_Starov and consecrated to the Holy_Trinity; and numerous structures of lesser importance. It also contains the Lazarev and Tikhvin Cemeteries, where ornate tombs of Mikhail_Lomonosov, Alexander_Suvorov, Nikolay_Karamzin, Modest_Mussorgsky, Peter_Ilyich_Tchaikovsky, Fyodor_Dostoevsky, and other famous Russians are preserved. {{commons|Alexander Nevsky Lavra}} ==See also== *The other Trinity Cathedral in St. Petersburg ==External link== * Official site of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra Category:Buildings_and_structures_in_Saint_Petersburg Category:Monasteries_in_Russia Category:Russian_Orthodox_monasteries Category:Religion_in_Saint_Petersburg Category:Visitor_attractions_in_Saint_Petersburg Category:1710_establishments De:Alexander-Newski-Kloster Fr:Monastère_Alexandre_Nevsky It:Monastero_di_Alexander_Nevskij Nl:Alexander_Nevski-klooster Ja:アレクサンドル・ネフスキー大修道院 Ru:Александро-Невская_лавра Fi:Aleksanteri_Nevskin_lavra Zh:亚历山大·涅夫斯基修道院
