When asked to define myself, the first thing that comes to mind is not the business that that brings in my paycheck, but the pursuit that occupies the majority of my days and the biggest chunk of my heart: Mother.
I'm a mom of four: My youngest child, Coleton is a busy, loveable kindergartener who keeps me laughing. My son, David, is a typical teenager with a baseball glove in one hand, a snack in the other, and ever present iPod headphone cords around his neck. My daughter, Vanessa is a high-...[more]

Children see life as one big game so why not take advantage of that? Nearly any task can be turned into a game with little effort. Some games can be a one-time fix; others can become part of your regular routine. A challenge to beat the timer or a race can gain more willing cooperation than threats or demands. An imaginary doggie can get a child to follow him to the car. Singing instructions are easier to follow than angry ones. Be creative and youll have more fun, too!

The environment that your baby enjoyed in the womb was not absolutely quiet. There was a constant symphony of sound. (Remember those whooshing sounds from when you listened to your babys heartbeat?) Because of this prenatal history, white noise sounds or soft bedtime music can help many babies to relax and fall asleep more easily. This is likely because these sounds create an environment more familiar to your baby than an extremely quiet room.
White noise or soft music can be helpful in three aspects. First, the gentle, consistent sound can be very effective at soothing a child to sleep. Second, it can filter out other noises that can jar her awake sounds from siblings, kitchen dishes clinking, the television, traffic, or a dog barking outside. Third, it creates a consistent cue for sleep.

How do you prevent public tantrums? Start by reviewing desired behavior prior to leaving the house, when entering a public building, or before you begin a playdate. This might prevent the whining or tantrum from even beginning. Put your comments in the positive (tell what you want, not what you dont want) and be specific. We are going in the store now. Please stay next to Mommy. Use your inside voice. And you can help me pick out the groceries, okay?
